M . opened the lodge and informed the brethren that before the business of installing his successor was proceeded with , he had a most pleasing duty to perform and one that he considered a very appropriate ending to a very pleasant ( to him ) year of office . Most of the brethren

present were aware that they had in their midst , a distinguished member of the Craft who was the oldest P . S . W . of the province , and for 40 years held the important office of Deputy Chief Constable . It was on account of his retiring from that position that a few of his brother Masons wished to make himaslightacknowledgmentof his services . He would therefore call upon Bro . Chambers , an old P . M . of the lodge , to make the presentation .

Bro . Chambers thereupon rose and after giving the brethren the resume of the life and career of Bro . Alley , commencing from the time he served , when merely a young man , as captain in the army in Spain , where he greatly distinguished himself , and was soon promoted to the rank of major , and following him to Canada and other parts of the world , until he ultimately settled in Suffolk , and was elected to the post he so faithfully served for so long a period .

He also recounted the major ' s long service as a Mason , and stating that from his initiation in Nova Scotia up to the present time he had taken the greatest interest in everything appertaining to Masonry , and had rendered great assistance to his own and neighbouring lodges . Bro . Chambers then asked Bro . Alley ' s acceptance of a silver salver and cabinet liqueur stand , as small tokens of the esteem and regard in which his brethren held him in .

Bro . Alley in very suitable terms acknowledged the compliment the brethren had paid him , and thanked them for the handsome gift , stating how proud he was to have his name enrolled on the Charter of St . Margaret's Lodge , of which he was the first Master . _ The lodge was then opened in the Second Degree , when the W . M , called upon Bro . Alley to perform , in the unavoidable absence through illness , of the V . VV . the Rev . C . J .

Martyn , D . P . G . M ., the ceremony of installation . Bro . Elwes , the VV . M . elect , was then presented and formally installed into the chair of K . Hearty good wishes having been expressed the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Suffolk Hotel , where the banquet was served in splendid style by Bro . Smith . Joseph Smith initiated into Craft mysteries , both ceremonies being carefully and ably performed . The report of the Permanent Committee as to the proposed removal of the lodge was then considered . The principal matter contained in the report was to the

effect , " that subject to certain alterations being made at the White Hart Hotel the proposition to remove the lodge remain in abeyance pending their completion . " Bro . Walls moved , which was seconded by Bro . Hurst and carried nem . con ., "That the Report of the Permanent Committee be received , and that its recommendation be adopted . " Bro . A . Jobbins having expressed a wish to stand as a Steward to one of the Masonic Festivals in 1 SS 4 , Bro .

Walls moved " That Bro . Jobbins be elected to represent the lodge at the forthcoming festival of the Benevolent Institution . " This was seconded by the Treasurer and carried . The aforesaid brother then gave a notice of motion for consideration at the next meeting " That the sum of five guineas be taken from the lodge funds and added to Bro . Jobbins ' s list . "

The lodge was then closed and the brethren adjourned to the banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth the usual toasts followed . fhe Rev . Bro . F . De Crespigny responded upon behalf of "The Provincial Grand Officers . " Bro . Smith acknowledged the toast of "The Initiate , " and Bros . Ross , 121 , and Morse , 1257 , replied to " The Visitors . " The proceedings then terminated .

FIDELITY LODGE ( No . 3 ) . —On Tuesday evening , the iSth inst ., the members of this lodge of instruction held their annual banquet at the Holborn Restaurant . There was a very fair muster of the brethren , who sat down to an excellent repast . The lodge , which holds its meetings on Thursday evenings , at the Yorkshire Grey , 17 , London-street , Tottenham Court-road , VV ., has

been recently adorned by a scries of presentations in the shape of furniture by some of its members . In the first place Bro . Scurrah presented three handsome and massive pedestals of rare quality , his good example being immediately followed by Bro . Field , whose gift took the shape of a Bible and the tesselated carpet . Bro . Knightley joined issue with a tripod for the S . W . ; and last , but not

least , Bro . G . E . Court , a young but energetically rising Freemason , presented a pair of exceedingly handsome columns , manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , of Little Britain . These presentations speak highly of the true Masonic spirit which actuates those members in search of knowledge at this lodge of instruction , and we commend their actions to the brethren of other lodges of the kind .

PERCY LODGE ( No . 198 ) . —The usual weekly meeting of this lodge was held at the Jolly Farmers , Southgate-road , N ., on the 15 th inst . There were present Bros . Moss , VV . M . ; Gush , S . Lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . Bro . Moss at once proceeded to work the sections of the lecture , assisted by Bros . Ashton , Galer , Prager , Fenner , Musto , sen ., Gush , and Powell . The lodge was opened in the Second Degree , and the VV . M . worked the sections of the lectures , assisted by Bro . Musto , jun ., Musto , sen ., Weeden , Powell , and

Gush . The lodge was opened in the Third Degree , and the VV . M . worked the sections of the lecture , assisted by Bros . Cohen , Galer , and Pearcy . Lodge was resumed to the First Degree , and Bros . Saunders , 12 G 9 : Harding , S 9 S ; Walmore , and Turner , 16 93 ; and Musto , 1349 ; were unanimously elected joining members . Cordial votes of thanks were accorded to Bro . Moss for his able working of the fifteen sections , and to the brethren who had assisted

him . Nothing further having offered for the good of Freemasonry , the lodge was closed in ancient form , and adjourned till the 22 nd inst . Brethren are reminded that the second monthly meeting of the Masonic Association in connection with this lodge , will be held on the 29 th inst ., at nine o ' clock , at the above address . King , for the very able and efficient manner in which he had worked the ceremony of installation . Bro . ROYAL JUBILEE CHAPTER ( No . 72 ) . —The installation meeting of this old chapter was held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , on Thursday , the 13 th inst . The chapter was opened by Ex . Comps . F . Dunn , M . E . Z . ; H . Lovegrove , P . Z ., H . j and H . Woods , J . Ex . Comp . H , Lovegrove was installed M . E . Z ., and F , Thurston , H ., by Ex . Comp . Wood , a visitor , who kindly officiated .

Comp . Cox , the J . elect , was unable to attend owing to an accident . The officers invested by the M . E . Z . were Ex . Comps . H . Webb , Treas . ; J . Nunn , S . E . ; J . Walker , S . Upon the removal of the cloth the long routine of toasls followed ; but the M . E . Z . was to be congratulated upon the the brevity with which he introduced them to the

companions . The toast of "The M . E . Z . " was proposed in terms of great laudation by the I . P . Z ., who said that without wishing to detract from the working of those excellent First Principals who had gone before Comp . G . Davis , yet he believed that the latter companion ' s rendering of the ritual had never been surpassed in the Jerusalem Chapter .

The M . E . Z . having replied , then gave "The Exaltee . " Comp . Lardents having responded , " The Health of the Past Principals , " coupled with the names of Comps . Moss and Wagner , followed . Those companions having duly acknowledged the compliment , the toasts of "The Visitors , " " The Treasurer and S . E ., " and "The Officers" brought the proceedings to an early conclusion .

Comp . Robt . H . Crowden . It is deserving of notice that every office in the chapter was well filled , and the ceremony in all respects was perfectly performed . The election of officers was then proceeded with , Comps . Lake being elected as M . E . Z . ; Fullwood , as H . ; Perrin , as J . ; Osmond , as Scribe N . ; James Crowden , P . S ., who named Lavington and Finch as Asst . Sojs . Comp . Robt . H . Crowden was appointed Treasurer ; and Comp .

Woodrow retains , to the satisfaction of the chapter , the position of Scribe E . After the banquet Comp . Robt . H . Crowden , M . E . Z ., proposed , in due course , "The Queen and Royal Arch Masonry , " and'" The G . Z . of the Order , " remarking that H . R . H . the Prince of Wales allowing himself to be installed as P . G . M . of Mark Masters , that very day , was further substantial evidence of his increased interest in the welfare of Masonry ; consequently the toast should be

responded to with additional enthusiasm . Comp . Brown proposed "The Health of the M . E . Z ,, Comp . Crowden , " and remarked , he not only considered it a great honour to be permitted to take the place of Comp . Lake , whose presence had been required at the Grand Mark Lodge , to propose the toast , but the companions must also consider it an honour to be presided over by such a M . E . Z ., for among all the chapters he had attended

he had never seen the ceremonies of the First Principal ' s chair more perfectly carried out . It was no doubt due to the zeal and assiduity displayed in the chapter of instruction that had created such excellent results , and as an old pupil of his he felt proud of such a M . E . Z . Comp . Robert H . Crowden , M . E . Z ., in returning thanks for the reception of the toast said nothing more effectually aids a man to achieve success than to have the knowledge

that he is believed capable of achieving it , and this knowledge had been a wonderful incentive to him in the formation of the chapter and gave him great encouragement in carrying out the arduous and responsible duties of the First Principal ' s chair—for had they not had such confidence in him—they would not have elected him as the first Z . of the chapter , an honour which he again returned thanks for , and he had in return endeavoured to carry out the command

contained in the volume of Sacred Law " what thy hand findest to do , do with all thy might . " Being the last time he should have the pleasure of presiding ( for his two years of office was shortly coming to an end ) he took the opportunity of thanking the companions for their general and regular support and also for assisting him to carry out the grandest design in Freemasonry , that of being happy and communicating happiness to others , and this perfect

unanimity and concord was no doubt the foundation of the success of the West Kent Chapter . The toast of "The Exaltees" followed , the M . E . Z . expressing the pleasure he had in exalting at the last convocation , Bro . Henry Windybank , C . C ., who as a member of an honourable profession , as also the Corporation , was heartily welcome in the chapter . It was to be hoped from the great interest he took in Corporation matters that some

day would see him holding a high position in it . Bro . VV . H . Lee Davies , who had received exaltation on the present occasion , was a member of the Lion and Lamb Lodge , and being introduced by the P . S . was sure of a good reception , and from the little the M . E . Z . knew of him and the ' great deal he had heard he had no doubt that with Comp . Windybank they both would become bright and shining lights in the firmanent of the West Kent Chapter .

Comp . Windybank in replying expressed his pleasure in being associated with a chapter so well conducted as the West Kent , and he had been wonderfully struck with the unanimity that prevailed amongst its members , and was delighted to have been exalted by the M . E . Z ., Comp . Crowden , during his term of office . Speaking of the Corporation he prophesied " life in the old dog " yet , and felt no alarm as to its rights and privileges being interfered with ,

and so far as he was concerned he should do his best to give it his heartiest support . Comp . Davies also expressed his satisfaction to be introduced to the chapter under such auspices , and appreciated exceedingly the manner in which the duties of P . S . were performed , as it had left a deep impression on his mind . He had heard a great deal of the M . E . Z . not only in the

chapter , but in social life , and was proud to be associated with a chapter which held such a high position in Freemasonry . " The Health of the Visitors " was next proposed , and responded to by each—Comps . Guest , Browne , Sillard , Vaughan , and Thomas—in suitable terms ; the last companion had travelled from Bristol to be present on thi ™ occasion .
