Bro . W . T . Purkis , the proprietor of the Royal Music Hall , Holborn , having purchased two prime porkers
at the late Cattle Show , has generously placed the carcases at the disposal of the clergy of the surrounding district for distribution amongst the deserving poor of their selection . The breeder of the animals is Mr . Poulton , of Hornsey . In a paragrap h in our issue of the 8 th instant , referring to the installation meeting of the Carnarvon Lodge , we gave the Cafe Royal , Regent-street , as the place
of meeting . It should have been the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , the home of the Carnarvon Lodge , as a reference to the report on ' another page of the same issue will show . We understand it is intended to give a Masonic
ball in Lancaster , the proceeds ot which are to be devoted to a Masonic Charity . The ex-Mayor and one of the oldest Town Councillors waited on the Mayor of Lancaster to ask for the use of the Town Hall ( of course by paying forit ) , and we are correct in sayinglhat he has refused permission for any such purpose .

The Postmaster-General having been refused permission by the Metropolitan Railway Company to lay a telegraph cable through their tunnel ftom Gower-street to Portland-road unless they were compensated , has insisted upon his right to do so , contending that the compensation paid to the Company on the purchase of the telegraphs by the Government included all future lines . During the terntic storm which prevailed in and around Liverpool on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning , the nth and 12 th instant , an escape of the most marvellous nature occurred at the Masonic Hall in Hopestreet , in that portion of the old building occupied by Bro . James Casey , the house steward , and his family . Itseems that when the storm was at its height , in the early hours of the morning , a chimney stack of the building was blown
down , and the debris crashed through the roof , making a hole about six feet square , and descended into a bedroom , where the t , vo servants of Bro . Casey were asleep . The rubbish completely smashed the lower part of the bed , but , wonderfully enough , both the young women escaped without the slightest injury , although they were completely covered with the debris , being' saved by the bedclothes which they h .-id over their heads .
" 'I he Cosmopolitan Masonic Calendar , Diary , and Pocket Book for 1 SS 4 " ( George Kenning , London and Liverpool ) , has again been published , and an examination of its varied and carefully compiled contents again shows that much labour has been bestowed on its compilation . For a period of 14 years the "Cosmo . " has been welcomed by Freemasons in every part of the world as an
almost invaluable companion and ready reference book , affording information with respect to the numbers , ages , places , and times of meeting of nearly every known Masonic body on the face of the globe , which cannot be found elsewhere . Correctness in every detail has been made a prominent feature by the publisher in his preparation of the calendar , and brethren of all ranks and degrees
may take it as being as far as possible a safe and certain reference book . The primary features of Bro . Kenning ' s excellent calendar are complete lists of lodges , with dates ( ancient and modern ); chapters , Knight Templars' preceptories , conclaves , colleges , and grand councils ; and to these are added the names of officers in the United Kingdom , the colonics , and every foreign country where
freemasonry has a legitimate footing . The "Cosmo . A ., has been elected on the Health Committee of the Social Science Association , Adam-street , Adelphi . We understand Mr . Belt has decided to accept the compromise , by which the damages were reduced to
, 1 , 500 , suggested by the three Judges . Bro . J . H . Sillitoe writes to say that in our report of his address at Colnein our issue ol last week , he is made to say that " the Burnley and Colne chapters were entitled to rank as the two oldest chapters . " What he did say was " The two oldest warranted chapters . " Bro . Alfred A . Clement was installed on the 12 th instant into the Master ' s Chair of the St . Leonard
Lodge , at the Town Hall , Shoreditch . About ico brethren were present at the ceremony , amongst whom were Bro . H . G . Buss , Asst . G . Sec , antl other prominent brethren . The installation of Bro . John C . Moor as W . M . of the Palatine Lodge , No . 97 , took place at Sunderland on Thursday afternoon , December 13 th , when Bro . Moor was favoured by the presence of Bro . 11 . Hudson , Prov . G . Sec . Durham , and provincial brethren from both Durham
and Northumberland . 'Ihe ceremony was efficiently performed by Bro . McNamara , the retiring VV . M . Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Prov . G . M . Cornwall , presided at a meeting of the executive committee of Truro Cathedral last week , when it was decided to at once complete the south transept as a memorial to the late Bishop of Truro ( now Archbishop of Canterbury ) . The proposal to have a copper roof for the Cathedra ! has been abandoned on the ground of expense .
At the Mansion House , on Monday , a bust of Bro . Alderman Sir John Whittaker Ellis , P . G . W ., by Mr . Belt , was presented to Lady Ellis by the inhabitants of the ward of Broad-street , intoken of their appreciation of the admirable manner in which he performed the duties of Lord Mayor two years ago . The bust was one of those mentioned in the Belt libel case , which has again of late come into prominence . The Lord Mayor made the presentation . At this season of the vear . when there is such an
abundance of good things of every description , the difficulty is to make a selection . This difficulty is experienced as much in connection with smoking materials as with others which contribute to our delectation . In these circumstances we take the liberty of recommending tooursmoking friends the "flaked gold-leaf tobacco , " of Messrs . Taddy and Co ., as being one of the best among the various tobaccos offered to the British public by this and other firms . Christmas Holidays—Midnight Travelling . —
The Great Western Railway Company announce their intention of starting a train from Paddington at midnight to-morrow ( Saturday ) and Monday next , carrying passengers at cheap fares to Bath , Bristol , Kxeter , Plymouth , and the whole of the West of England , passengers having the option of returning any day up to and including Dec . 28 th . Those persons whose business compels them to work to a late hour on those evenings will doubtless appreciate the arrangement .
The Lord Mayor has kindly consented to take the chair at the festival dinner to be held in March in aid of the funds of the Jews' Hospital and Orphan Asylum , when his lordship will be supported by the Sheriffs of London and Middlesex . By this graceful act the Lord Mayor has given one more striking proof of his consideration for the Jewish community . This is not the first occasion that the Lord Mayor has shown an interest in the
institution whose cause he will plead at the Freemasons ' Tavern . In 1 SS 1 , in his capacity of Sheriff , he , with his colleague , Alderman ( then Mr . Sheriff ) Waterlow , supported Mr . Benjamin L . Cohen , who presided at the last festival dinner of the charity . On that occasion the Lord Mayor heartily pleaded the cause of the charity , and mentioned that having been connected with the London Orphan Asylum , Watford , for 30 years , he could speak
with some confidence of the excellent management of the kindred Jewish Institution at Lower Norwood . —Jewish Chronicle . Bro . Wm . G . Scott , Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba , at the annual meeting of that Grand Body , gave the following report concerning his visit to England : " In September , 1 SS 2 , in company with R . W . Bro . A . Pearson , Grand Senior Warden , I had the
pleasure of being present at a Special Communication of the Grand Lodge of England , and I wish here to thank the brethren of that Grand Lodge , through you , for the fraternal welcome extended to us , and for the many kindnesses received at their hands , which we did not take as compliments to ourselves , but rather as courtesies to the M . VV . Grand Lodge of which we had the honour of being officers . I wish more particularly to express my thanks to
V . W . Bro . Woodford , P . G . Chap ., and VV . Bro . Lake , P . G . Reg . Cornwall , both of the London Freemason , in whose hands we were Masonically placed . We also visited the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , and the Royal Masonc Institution for Girls . Bjth of these useful Institutions are supported entirely by voluntary subscriptions , at an annual cost of about 75 , 000 dols . They are now educating , clothing , and maintaining 453 boys and girls ; educating them in such
a manner so that when they arrive at the age of 15 they are fitted to fill any position in the ordinary walks of life ; not only that , but also provided with suitable situations whereby they may attain a position which , in their ordinary circumstances of life , they themselves would be utterly unable to procure , thus saving many of them from dangers and misfortunes to which they would , no doubt , be exposed . Leonard

28 th .
Bro . Wm . G . V . W . Bro . Woodford , P . G . Chap ., and VV . Bro . Lake , P . G . Reg . Cornwall , both of the London Freemason , in whose hands we were Masonically placed . a manner so that when they arrive at the age of 15 they are fitted to fill any position in the ordinary walks of life ; not only that , but also provided with suitable situations whereby they may attain a position which , in their ordinary circumstances of life , they themselves would be utterly unable to procure , thus saving many of them from dangers and misfortunes to which they would , no doubt , be exposed .
