pressed as to whether such an anomaly could exist , as a London lodge meeting in the same hall as a provincial loHge . It was decided , therefore , to form a ( ommiltee to thoroughly inquire into the matter before deciding the question . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren refreshed themselves .
The usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts having been honoured , The I . P . M ., Bro . Melbourne , proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " and in so doing said Bro . Ta'lby was a W . M . of whom they ought to be proud . At there last meeting he worked the Three Degrees for the first time as Master of the lodge in a faultless and impressive manner .
That they took as a prelude of what was to follow , and they had not been deceived , for that night they had seen their este > med W . M . perform a ceremony unique in the history of the Union Waterloo Lodge ; he had raised no less than five brethren to the Sublime Degree without a fault that mig ht affect even the most critical ear , and he had no htsitation in assuring them , from his own personal
knowledge of the abilities of Bro . Tarlhy , that during his year of office he would carry out his duties to the entire satisfaction of the brethren and to the credit of the lodge . The Worshipful Master , who on rising to respond was received with a round of cheering that lasted some few minutes , said that he could only thank them for the heaily and cordial manner in which they had received the toast of
his health . The eulogy paid him by the I . P . M . far surpassed his deserts , or anj thing that he had done to deserve it , irrespective of the fact that as their W . M . he had simply done his duty . It appeared to him , however , that his « ork was " growing small by degrees and beautifully less , " as at their last meeting he had three Degrees to
work , at the present one two Degrees , while at the next he had at present literally nothing to do . He again coidially thanked them , and could assure them of his earnest desire for the success and prosperity of the lodge . Seveial other toasts followed , and the proceedings were enlivened with some excellent harmony .

MARPLE . —Lodge of Benevolence ( No . 336 ) . —The brethren of this , lodge met on the 15 th inst . to celebrate the Festival of St . John the Evangelist and to install Bro . John Phylhian , the W . Master elect . There are few country lodges which possess , for the Masonic antiquary , greater and more numerous points of interest than that which meets in this out-of-the-way corner of the Province
of Cheshire . The lodge is in possession of a set of records dating from New Year's Day in ihe year of grace 1759 , when certain brethren of the good old tawn of Stockport were moved to commence a new Craft movement at the house of Bro . Robert Kitchen , " at ye sign of ye Unicorn in ye Hillgate , " a well-known coaching house in its day . From this beginning , the lodge , No . S 3 under its
Athol warrant , fl rurished and prospered until the close of last century . Its roll of members shows fiat the elite of the town and district were identified wilh its fortunes . But , from a set of causes which can now only be guessed at , this dove found no resting place for the sole of its foot , but was bandied about from pillar to post with a rapidity which makes one wonder how its members were kept together .
No fewer than 10 removals of its place of meeting took place between the years 1759 and 179 1 , at which latter date bu-iness was being conducted at the Red Lion Hotel . Following this , the affairs of the lodge seem to have reached their most extreme point of misery and attenuation , and for a few years it is extremely difficult to say with exactness whether , " having a name , it lived or was dead . "
Probably the only fact which can really be insisted upon with certainty is that the warrant , furniture , books , and jewels were kept together in the locality , and hence its revival in the early yeais of the present century at the Stag's Head Inn , Marple Bridge , a locality some six miles distant from the actual scene of its biith . Since this period its existence has been continuous and its records are unbroken . Its
vicissitudes have been numerous , but it is to-day in a state of active prosperity which takes second rank to no lodge in the province . Among the many curious and interesting antiquities still in its possession , in addition to the minute and account books dating from 1759 , are numerous original
articles of furniture and jewels ot an antiquity which has hitherto puzzled every Masonic antiquary who has examined them . It is pleasing to think that these objects of Masonic interest have been so carefully preserved , and that they are tabulated with care in a manuscript history , which deals exhaustively with the records of the lodge from its
formation in 1759 . A total of 37 brethren were present , of whom the following is a complete list : —Bros . John Sherwin , W . M . j J . Boardman , P . M . ; H . Jackson , P . M ., P . P . G . P ., Treas . ; J . H . Hartley , P . M ., P . P . G . P ., Org . ; Tymm , P . M . j Cartwright , P . M . ; Hardy , P . M . ; T . Eyre Mason , P . M . ; Crompton , P M . ; Ridgway , P . Wiilan , Stwd . 300 ; and Mark Stafford , 3 61 . One pleasing fea'ure , which is perhaps too little of a distinctive feaiure in the installation ceremony generally , was noticeable in the fact that the Past Masters as a body
took active parts in the work . Bro . Ralph Andrew , P . M ., acted as Installing Master , and , the consecutive and essential portions of the ceremony having been performed , the following brethren then discharged the respective duties assigned to them . Bros . Jesse Tymm , P . M . ; T . Eyre Mason , P . M . ; and John Crompton , P . M . presented the wurking tools . The address to the W . M . was given by
Bro . Ridgway , P . M . j that to the Wardens by Bro . Jackson , P . VI ., P . P . G . P . j and that to the brethren by Bro . Caldwell , P . M . An efficient trio of vocalists , consisting of Bros . Balfe , Alcock , and Mark Stafford , contributed both to the efficiency of the ceremony and the pleasures of the social board . It is a custom in this lodge to present each retiring Master with a P . M . 's jewel as a memento of his
connection with the chair , and that pleasant duty was agreeably discharged at the social board by Bro . Jackson . The W . M . appointed the following officers for the year : Bros . Wm . P . VI ,, Almoner ; | . Taylor , l . G . j and T . Mather and Haytock , Stwds . Bro . J . Osbildiston , P . M ., was re-elected Tjler . This ancient brother has been a member of the lodge since 1845 , and his father was an initiate in 1810 , so that the family connection with the lodge exceeds three quarters of a century . Bro . To . vle , 163 , diversified the procedings at the social board by a masterly recitation from "Manfred . "

M ., P . P . G .
Wm . This ancient brother has been a member of the lodge since 1845 , and his father was an initiate in 1810 , so that the family connection with the lodge exceeds three quarters of a century . Bro . To . vle , 163 , diversified the procedings at the social board by a masterly recitation from "Manfred . "
