he ( the W . M . ) had the great pleasure of placing that valuable Past Master's jewel upon his breast . He sincerely hoped , and he spoke for every member as well as himself , that he would live long to wear it , with happy recollections of his connection with that lodge . Bro . Lomas , I . P . always continue to do his duty as a member of the lodge , and perform any duty he might at any future tim 2 be called upon to do . After receiving hearty greetings from a very large number of visitors present , the lodge was closed by the newly-installed W . M . in such a manner as to point out at once that he is such a brother as ought to be the Master of a lodge , and under the direction of such an one it must lead to great prosperity .

Subsequently a banquet was held , and the W . M . presided , where his great ability displayed itself again as a thorough president , and made all perfectly happy around him . A capital musical programme had been provided , under the direction of Bro . W . Booth , P . P . G . D . C . Bros . Wm .

McIntyre North delivered the addresses to the officers , and the concluding addresses ware given by the Installing Officer . Congratulations having been given and received , the lodge was closed , and the

brethren adjourned to banquet . The banquet hall presented an unusually animated appearance . Thanks to kindly well wishers , the walls were covered with water-colour drawings and other decorations . Palms and the bounties of Flora , arranged by the hands of the fair partners of the VV . M . and junior brother , graced the festive board , and nothing was wanting to give eclat to the proceedings save the viands which were speedily placed

before the expectant guests b y the hostess , who that evening added another to a long list of culinary triumphs . The chair was taken by Bro . Hudson , W . M ., who , after the usual matter of fact interval between the two graces , gave the usual Masonic toasts with the honours observed on these occasions . Bro . the Rev . T . N . McNulty , Chaplain , in proposing "The Memory of St . John the Evangelist , " reminded the

brethren of the exalted qualities of their patron saint . Every Mason knew who St . John was , and if the Evangelist was not a member of a lodge , he was thorou / hl y imbued with the grand Masonic spirit , was one who delighted in seeing people enj oy themselves . The three grand principles on which the Order was founded were , if he might so term it , the trinity of principles which permeated the teachings of St . John , and whom , as representing the ideal of Masonic

life and teaching , they could justly claim as the patron saint of the Order . The Order mi g ht fairly claim to date its existence from the dawn of civilisation , and if it had not appeared a cravingof human nature , would never have existed for so long a time . Every age witnessed a period when certain truths , or so-called truths , were apparently crushed out of existence , but after a time the genuine truths reappeared , and bloomed more vigorously than before . The

VV . M . was the 103 rd who had presided over the fortunes of the lodge . This represented a tremendous expanse of time , and yet when generation after generation of nun had taught and carried out the same great principles , the lodge remained as strong and nourishing as ever . The fact that the lodge had existed for 103 years proved that Freemasonry did appease that great craving of human nature , thi des ' : re for fellowship and enjoyment in sunshine , and of sympathy

and protection in sadder times ; the teaching of f reem isonry p laced this natural feeling in the higher plane of the intellectual world , and so long as they endeavjured to carry out the beautiful teachings of its ritual they could hope for the special protection of the G . A . O . T . U . The toast was drank in silence . The I . P . M ., Bro . G . W . Carter , then proposed " The Health of the Worshipful Master , " in doing which he

eulogised the zeal and ability with which he had discharged the duties of the various offices he had already filled , alluded to the high estimation in which he was held by the brethren of the lodge and his fellow townsmen in general , and prophesied that he would discharge the duties of his high office in a manner which would fully maintain the

reputation for good working which the Royal Yorkshire Lodge had enjoyed for many years . 'The toast was received with more than the usuil honours , and the VV . M . in a short pithy and effective speech pledged himself to make every exertion to carry out his duties to the satisfaction of the brethren .

Bro . C . N . McIntyre North , in proposing "The Health of the I . P . M . and Installing Officer , " expressed his regret that Bro . Lee was unable to attend , as he had missed that

feeling of gratification and pride he must have felt had he witnessed the able manner in which the ceremonies had been carried out , and of satisfaction that the seed he had so assiduously sown in the past had borne such excellent fruit on the present occasion . He ( Bro . North ) was as an Installing Master gratified to find that the ritual performed in that ancient lodge and in many others of the district of

nearly equal antiquity was identical with that used by himself , excepting in a few minor points which were decided improvements on the one he used , and after expressing approval of the manner in which the Past Masters of the lodge had supported the Installing Officer , said he felt sure from the approbation of the brethren that the judgment he had formed ofthe I . P . M . was correct , and

he proposed his health as one who was a credit to the Craft in general and did honour to the lodge . Bro . Carter returned thanks in an eloquent speech , thanking the Past Misters for the great services they had always rendered him , and Bro . McIntyre North for the eulogistic manner in which he had proposed his health . He was gratified to say Bro . North's opinion as to the ritual was a

confirmation of that expressed by others , and although he had vacated the chair , it would always be his aim to further the interests and maintain the reputation of their ancient lodge . Bro . H . Summerscales , S . W ., responded for "The Officers of the Lodge . " Bros . Bott , Davis , Read , Greenwood , and other brethren

replied for "The Visitors . " Bro . Roper gave much gratifying information as to the progress of the Masonic Charities . Bro . Mann responded for "The Absent Brethren , " and the Tyler's toast closed the meeting . During the evening a number of songs and recitations

were given by Bros . Sharp , H . Sum nersciles , Hoyle , Gilleard , and Miller , and thanks to the indefatigable Stewards , Bros . Harrison and Dry , and to the energetic and indefatigable Secretary , Bro . Gilleard , the whole affair was carried out in a manner worthy of the ancient reputation of the Royal Yorkshire Lodge .

LIVERPOOL . Princes' Lodge ( No . 2316 ) . —An emergency meeting of this lodge was held at the Deaf and Dumb Institute , Princes ' -road , on Monday , the nth inst ., for arrears of business . M . an illuminated adddress signed by all the brethren of the

lodge , congratulating him on his appointment to the office of S . G . W . of the province , and also upon his election as Mayor of the city . 'The following is a copy of the address : "To James De Bels Adam , VV . M . of the Princes' Lodge , No . 23 iG , of A . F . and A . Masons . We , the memb rs of the above lodge , desire to convey to you our hearty congratulations upon vour appointment as

Senior Grand Warden of the Province of the Western Division of Lancashire , and also upon your election to the position of Mayor of this important city . May the Great Architect of the Universe grant you health and strength to discharge the duties of your high offices to the satisfaction of your brethren and with honour to yourself . " The address , which was beautifully and artistically illuminated with the

different arms and msignias , and put together in the form of an album , appropriately bound in morocco enlivened with gold ornament and monogram , gave general satisfaction to the members of the lodge . 'The W . Sl . accepted the present in an admirable speech , which was heartily received . After the lodge was closed the S . W . invited all present to dinner , when a most enjoyable evening was spent . The banner was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

S . W ., W . M . elect , was presented to the Installing Master , Bro . T . Pike , P . Bro . C . H . Wheeler the Wardens . Previous to the installation there was a passing and raising , the ceremonies being performed respectively by the W . M . and Bro . C . H . Wheeler . "Hearty good wishes" were expressed by a great many visiting brethren present , and the lodge was closed . At the banquet which subsequently followed , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed .

Bro . Booth proposed " The Health of the W . M ., '' and remarked he had great pleasure in seeing his friend in the high position which the lodge had placed him , and he was quite certain he would fill the post with credit to himself and the lodge . UiallJJlUl 3 Llll 11143 Ui 111

he ( the W . M . ) had the great pleasure of placing that valuable Past Master's jewel upon his breast . He sincerely hoped , and he spoke for every member as well as himself , that he would live long to wear it , with happy recollections of his connection with that lodge . Bro . Lomas , I . P . M ., acknowledged the handsome present , and said he was very pleased to hear such kind remarks made by Bro . Herbert Foster towards him . He should for ever treasure it , and

always continue to do his duty as a member of the lodge , and perform any duty he might at any future tim 2 be called upon to do .
