Hon , acknowledged the good wishes of the brethren expressed upon discovering it was the anniversary of his birthday . The Tyler ' s toast concluded a very pleasant evening , to which Bro . Bassctt with his wonderful conjuring , Bro . Fowle ' s recitation , and the musical talents of Bros . Essex , G . Ralph , Frank Gulliford , and G . Hudson , added considerably .

LONDON RIFLE BRIGADE LODGE ( No . 19 G 2 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held at Anderton's Hotel , Fleet-street , on Friday , the 15 th inst ., the following brethren being present : Bros . The lodge vvas opened in the customary manner and the minutes of the previous meetvn" read atul confirmed . The ballot vvas taken for Mr . William Sloper Wright , which proving unanimous in his favour , hc was declared elected , and the VV . M . initiated the candidate into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry . The lodge was shortly afterwards closed in peace and haimony .

P ., had much pleasure in accceding to

thc wishes of the promoters that the lodge , if duly warranted , should be called the Londonderry Lodge . The Prov . G . Sec , Bro . R . Hudson , was proposed to be the first VV . M . ; J . C . Moor , VV . M . 97 , to be thc first S . VV . ; and Deans , J . VV . So , to be the first J . VV . He ( Uro . I . P . M ., seconded , and the motion was carried unanimously . The VV . M . announced that hc , thc Wardens , and several Past Masters and brethren of the * lodge attended the special I ' rov . Grand Lodge held at Durham , on thc 30 th ult ., to reccivca visitfrom H . R . H . thc Dukeof Albany . He moved that such an important and historical event as the royal visit to thc province should be placed on record on the minutes of the lodge , which was agreed to ncm con . Lodge having been opened the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . 'The ballot was taken for Mr . Bernard Steel and declared to be unanimous in his favour ; after which he vvas introduced into the lodge and duly initiated by the VV . M . The Treasurer drew the attention of the brethren to a request made by the R . W . Prov .

Grand Master that the lodge would make a point of sending an annual subscription to the East Lancashire Systematic Benevolent Institution . It was resolved to take the matter into consideration at the next meeting of the lodge . A dispensation was read from Prov . Grand Lodge to wear Craft clothing at the soiree of the lodge to take place the same evening . The lodge was then closed .

CHORLEY . —Ellesmere Lodge ( No . 730 ) . —The usual monthl y meeting of this lodge vvas held in the Masonic Rooms in the Town Hall , on the 13 th inst ., when the following brethren were present : Bros . The next propbsition was one worthy of note , as being the first of its kind in the history of the lodge , and was received b y the brethren with great satisfaction . This was the proposition of Bro . Edward Lawrence , P . M ., that his eldest son , Mr . John Lawrence , naval engineer , become

a member of thc lodge , and be initiated into thc mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry . Bro . Kerr , in seconding the proposition , expressed the pleasure hc felt not only on account ol thc long knowledge and acquaintance hc had of Mr . John Lawrence , of his hi gh character , qualities , and position , but of the pleasing incident , unique in the history of the lodge , and seldom occurring in any—that of an old

and valued Past Master proposing his son in Ins own lodge . Several brethren expressed the feelings of gratification with which this happy incident had been received , and thought it augured well for thc Masonic p rogress and prosperity of the lodge , and congratulated Bro . Lawrence , P . M ., upon the pleasing event . A hearty vote of thanks

vvas passed to Bro . Kerr for his presentation to thc lodge of a Festival Steward ' s certificate , suitably framed . Thc lodge was then closed , and the brethren dined at Stansficld's I lotel . 'The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , and they separated after having spent a most happy evening .

Mark Fairweather , into thc chair of K . S . with all due rite and ceremony and with that extreme care and correctness for which Bro . Peel has earned notoriety , to the satisfaction of all present and to the credit of the lodge . The

usual proclamations having been made and salutes given , Bro . lshmael Davies ( a zealous and much esteemed member of the lodge ) invested thc following brethren ollicers for thc ensuing year , viz .: Bros . Peel delivered the three addresses and concluded the ceremony vvith prayer . Before closing the lodge Bro . Peel proposed that the sum of ten guineas be voted out of the lodge funds towards the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . brother having volunteered to fulfil the duties of Steward at the forthcoming festival of the institution , and thus makes a total of £ 66 ios . given by the lodge during the past year . A proposition , of which previous notice had been given by Bro . lshmael Davies , that the sum of £ 2 2 S . should be paid out of the lodge funds to each of the four representatives of the lodsfe who attended the Grand Lodge

convocation in December last vvas carried , and it was stated by two of the representatives then present that the £ S Ss . would be given to the East Lancashire Systematic Fund . The Auditors' report of the balance sheet was next taken and adopted , after which " Hearty good wishes " were expressed by the visitors and the lodge was rinsed .

The brethren then wended their way to the Queen's Hotel , where a splendid banquet had been prepared for them , and which gave the utmost satisfaction to all . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , and included " The Health of Bro . George Mellor , V . W . Deputy P . G . M ., " who replied . "Thc Masonic Charities , "

responded to at length by Bro . John Chadwick , P . G . Sec , "The VV . M ., " "The I . P . M ., " " Thc Installing Master , " " The Past Masters , " and " Thc Visitors , " all of which were suitably acknowledged . During tlie evening Bro . John Greenwood ( the Lancashire John Parry ) gave in his unrivalled style several songs , and rendered valuable aid as accompanist on the piano .

BUXTON . —Phcenix Lodge of St . Ann ( No . 1235 ) - —The annual festival of this lodge was celebrated on the 7 th inst ., at the Court House , where the brethren assembled after thc luncheon which took place at the close of the annual meeting of the chapter attached to this lodge , and which will be found ' reported in our Royal Arch intelligence , Bros . J . H . Lawson , P . P . G . D ., the VV . M ., opened the lodge , being supported by thc following officers

adjourned tothe Old Hall Hotel , where a sumptuous banquet awaited them . The reputation of that historical building for its cusine needs no comment from us , its reputation , through ages , being proverbial . In consequence of the day being thc festival of both thc Craft lodge and Royal Arch chapter , the toasts were made to embrace those usually observed at both Craft and Arch banquets . Bro .

Bcsvvickc-Royds responded to that in honour of "The Officers of Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter , " and Bro . J . Smith for " The Prov . Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter . " "Thc Ncvvly-lnstallcd Principals" was proposed by Comp . P . Lc Gros , P . M ., and acknowledged by Comns . VV . C . Moore and james Whitehead ; and " Thc Ncwlv-Installcd VV . M .. " nronoscd bv Bro . I . E . Harrison .

was responded to by the VV . M ., Bro . Gladwin , both being received with manifest enthusiasm . "The LP . M . and Past Principals" was proposed by Bro . A . E . Ainsworth , who in a lew sympathetic words directed thc attention of thc brethren to thc circumstances that necessitated thc absence of thc I . P . M ., Bro . J . II . Lawson , as also some of thc senior members ; hc at the

same time , with much feeling and in graphic language , pointing out thc solemn lesson taught in the Third Degree . After a due acknowledgment of the toast , " The Charities" was proposed by Bro . VV . Boughen and responded to by Bro . John Stanley , the latter again expressing a willingness to attend as Steward on behalf of the Girls' School , and after a somewhat pithy speech that quaint and welcome brother succeeded in collecting the

sum of £ 44 towards the Institution for which he so eloquently pleaded . " Thc Installing Master and Principals , " proposed by Bro . J . Whitehead and responded to by Bro . J . Chadwick ; " 'The Visitors , " proposed by Bro . A . E . Ainsworth and duly acknowledged ; " The Officers of thc Lodge , " proposed by the VV . M . and severally responded to , were the remaining toasts . 'The proceedings were enlivened with some excellent songs , and the meeting altogether vvas most enjoyable .

Lodge having been opened the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . 'The ballot was taken for Mr . Bernard Steel and declared to be unanimous in his favour ; after which he vvas introduced into the lodge and duly initiated by the VV . M . The Treasurer drew the attention of the brethren to a request made by the R . W . Prov .

Grand Master that the lodge would make a point of sending an annual subscription to the East Lancashire Systematic Benevolent Institution . It was resolved to take the matter into consideration at the next meeting of the lodge . A dispensation was read from Prov . Grand Lodge to wear Craft clothing at the soiree of the lodge to take place the same evening . The lodge was then closed .

a member of thc lodge , and be initiated into thc mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry . Bro . Kerr , in seconding the proposition , expressed the pleasure hc felt not only on account ol thc long knowledge and acquaintance hc had of Mr . John Lawrence , of his hi gh character , qualities , and position , but of the pleasing incident , unique in the history of the lodge , and seldom occurring in any—that of an old

and valued Past Master proposing his son in Ins own lodge . Several brethren expressed the feelings of gratification with which this happy incident had been received , and thought it augured well for thc Masonic p rogress and prosperity of the lodge , and congratulated Bro . A proposition , of which previous notice had been given by Bro . lshmael Davies , that the sum of £ 2 2 S . should be paid out of the lodge funds to each of the four representatives of the lodsfe who attended the Grand Lodge

convocation in December last vvas carried , and it was stated by two of the representatives then present that the £ S Ss . would be given to the East Lancashire Systematic Fund . The Auditors' report of the balance sheet was next taken and adopted , after which " Hearty good wishes " were expressed by the visitors and the lodge was rinsed .

The brethren then wended their way to the Queen's Hotel , where a splendid banquet had been prepared for them , and which gave the utmost satisfaction to all . same time , with much feeling and in graphic language , pointing out thc solemn lesson taught in the Third Degree . After a due acknowledgment of the toast , " The Charities" was proposed by Bro . John Stanley , the latter again expressing a willingness to attend as Steward on behalf of the Girls' School , and after a somewhat pithy speech that quaint and welcome brother succeeded in collecting the
