SPEFCHES AND ADDRESSES OF H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES , 1 S 63-1 SSS . Edited by James Macaulay , A . M ., M . D . Edin ., author of "Victoria R . I ., her Life and Reign . " With a Portrait . London John Murray , Albemarle-street , 1 SS 9 .

This volume , which Mr . Macaulay appears to have compiled with the utmost care , is certain to find many readers among the members of a Society with which his Royal Hig hness has been connected for 20 years , and over which he has presided , for nearly three-fouiths of that time , as Grand Master . But , even if the general body of Masons were not thus specially interested in the speeches delivered

by his Royal Highness on every variety of public occasion , they would still be attracted by a volume which contains so much that is really valuable and instructive reading . The Prince , in the course of his 25 years of public life , has of necessity spoken frequently , and on all kinds of subjects . By inclination , perhaps , he may have shown a preference for matters connected with

literature and art , but whenever his engagements have permitted it , he has always most graciously acceded to a request to attend and perform any function which might be of service to the community generally , and on every occasion his speeches have been listened to not only with respect and favour as coming from the Prince of Wales , but also with admiration for the ranee of ability and

knowledge he has shown to possess . Those he delivered at the opening of the Fisheries and other Exhibitions , and in behalf of the Royal College of Music and the Imperial Institute , furnish some of the best reading which the volume contains ; but those connected with Masonry—at his installation as M . W . G . M . or when presiding at the Festival of one of our Institutions—will naturally prove the chief attraction . As for the duties of editor , they

have clearly been carried out with great ability by Mr . Macaulay , who is to be warmly congratulated on the manner in which the speeches have been arranged , the clearness and sufficiency of the explanatory text in which they are embodied , and the general appearance and character of the book . We are satisfied that our readers will derive both pleasure and information from a study of this volume of their respected Grand Master ' s speeches .

STAMP ALBUM AND CATALOGUE . Bro . VV . Lincoln , of High Holborn , has just issued a new and improved edition of his now justly celebrated stamp album and catalogue , which has , perhaps , done more than anything else to raise stamp collecting from a mere ephemeral pastime into almost the rank of a science . We well remember how in our younger days we used to work

comparatively in the dark as to the relative degree ot ranty , and even in some cases the nationality of the various postage stamps it was our good fortune to become possessed of , and how eagerly we should have devoured the contents of the handsome volume before us , which , in addition to the spaces for the various stamps , contains an exhaustive

list , with the value of the various issues of stamps oS all countries and periods , lt is further adorned with maps , which are of great value to the collector , and enable the philatelist to assign the postage labels to their correct position , historically and geograhically , and so assist him to trace the rise and progress of the various postal systems of the world .

Rowe , Tyler . Bro . F . W . Cash , I . P . M ., then delivered the charges to the Master , Wardens , and brethren , in a very forcible and admirable way , at which the brethren present expressed themselves much delighted . It is some

years since the W . M . of the lodge installed his successor . After " Hearty p . ood wishes" had been given , the lodge was closed , ¦ and the brethren sat down to an excellent banquet , provided by Bro . C . H . Boncey , the obliging host of the Portland Hotel , whose geniality is well known . Grace having been said , the W . M . gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts in kind and appropriate words ,

observing that he should not make his speeches long , but be as brief as possible , as there was much musical talent to be heard , one piece especially to be played for the first time by Bro . J . Li Calsi , their talented and worthy Organist . Bro . F . W . Cash , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the W . M ., " said he knew well that the brethren present

wished him a happy and successful year of office , and , if possible , have douulo the number ot initiates as he ( the I . P . M . ) had had during the time he had occupied the chair . Their VV . M . and himself had worked hard together , and had climbed to the top of the ladder , which position was within the reach of every hard-working Mason , and it was only by hard work and perseverance that the work could

be done . He assured the brethren that in their W . M . they had a Master who knew how to do his work well . He asked the brethren present to drink the health of theW . Master in a bumper , and wish him every success . The VV . M ., in replying , said he felt highly complimented by the kind words which had fallen from the lips of their worthy I . P . M ., Bro . F . W . Cash . He only hoped and

trusted that it would be his pleasure to have tne same number of initiates as Bro . Cash had had , - he certainly should not object to double the number , for he felt sure that on his leaving the chair the lodge would then be in the same prosperous state as it now stood , which was a great ' credit to Bro . F . W . Cash . He should not object to thc work , but hoped that in doing the work he gave

satisfaction to the brethren . Their I . P . M . had set him a good example , and in proposing the health of the I . P . M . it afforded him a great deal of pleasure . All connected with the lodge appreciated greatly the interest their I . P . M . had always shown in the lodge since he had been amongst them , and that during his year of office he had worked hard and well for its prosperity , and in leaving the chair he

passed into his ( the W . M . ' s ) hands a good balance to the credit of the lodge . They were now out of danger , which was entirely owing to the admirable manner in which their I . P . M . and the P . M . ' s had conducted the affairs of the lodge . He would endeavour to follow the good example set by their I . P . M ., and he felt this—that Bro . F . VV . Cash would always render any assistance he required . One

of his most pleasant duties that evening was to place that well-earned P . M . 'sjewel on Bro . F . W . Cash's breast , and he asked thebrethren to drink "The Health of their I . P . M . " heartily , and wish him for many years to come good health , and that he would be enabled to come amongst them often . The I . P . M ., in reply , said he rose to thank all present

most affectionately lor the kind manner in which his health had been proposed and drunk , and he scarcely could find words to express those thanks . He felt that when he was voted to the chair he had serious and responsible duties before him , and to know and feel that he had performed those duties during his year of office to the satisfaction ot
