Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

the brethren was a great pleasure . When he came into the lodge he never thought he should be the Master , but their good old friend and Bro . E . H . Thiellay , their much respected late Treasurer , had urged him on , and as he advanced he had learnt to love Masonry and Freemasons . To all young Masons he gave advice—to work hard and diligently . It would teach them to do their duty towards

one another , and enable them to be happy with all mankind . That night would be to him one of the happiest of his life , and he hoped to be amongst them for many years to come , and wear the handsome Past Master ' s jewel the brethren had kindly presented to him , which he should always prize , and he again thanked all present sincerely for their good wishes .

The W . M ., in proposing "The Health of the Visitors , " said it was always a great pleasure , as well as a delight , to the brethren of the New Cross Lodge to give the visitors a hearty welcome . Some had travelled far to visit the lodge , and hc hoped all visitors who had come , no matter from far or near , had enjoyed a pleasant evening . Looking round the festive board , he saw many faces that

he knew well , and he gave one and all his hearty thanks for coming and helping to welcome him in the important position as Master of the New Cross Lodge , and he hoped during his year of office he should see many of the faces again in the lodge and at the festive board . There were so many visitors present that it was impossible for all to speak , but felt sure that those who responded would

convey the feelings of all present . Bro . E . J . B . Bumstead , P . M . 54 S , said it had always given him great pleasure to be amongst them , and that night he had been much edified and pleased with the manner in which the work had been performed by . their I . P . M . and the Master in the lodge . The visitors to the New Cross Lodge always received a most cordial and

generous reception at the banquet table , and he could assure the W . M . that those present wished him a happy year of office , and their I . P . M . good health . Bro . Spurgin , W . M . 1305 , assured the VV . M . and the brethren that he had spent a most comfortable evening with them . All had been most pleasant . The working of the lodge was good , the arrangements for the comfort of

the visitors all that one could desire or wish for , and to him it appeared that to make the visitors happy was the chief aim of the lodge , and on behalf of the visitors he could assure the W . M . that they had had a most pleasant and enjoyable time . Bro . G . Brown , P . M . and Sec 140 , said that he might make a claim for the good working , or rather a part of

thegood working , of tbe lodge , as their I . P . M . had been a good attendant at the lodge of instruction of which he was Preceptor , and he was delighted that evening to see all Ihe work had been carried out well . The kindness and geniality shown towards visitors of the New Cross Lodge was well known , and he assured the Iodge that all the brethren had spent not only a pleasant evening but a profitable one .

Bro . G . Reynolds , W . M . i 6 i 4 andSec . 2191 , in replying , assured the W . M . that he appreciated very much the kindness shown towards him by the brethren of the New Cross Lodge ever since he had first been introduced to them by Bro . Bertini , P . M . To him it was indeed pleasant to hear such a good report of the progress of the bdge , and both the W . M . and the I . P . M . must feel thev had

been rewarded by knowing that their financial position was good , and to know as W . M . and I . P . M . they have a clean bill of health , and he sincerely hoped it would continue , and that there would be no troubles or trials , and that each year would show continued prosperity . When he had first the pleasure of visiting the lodge the number of members was about 25

, and now it was over 50 . At the first installation meeting he attended the brethren then present filled about three tables , little ones , but to look round at the large company present it must , indeed , be a great satisfaction , not only to the VV . M ., but to the P . M . ' s . He could also claim a little for the good working of the W . M ., and a little of the I . P . M ., whose rendering of the charges that evening was most

excellent , and showed that lodges of instruction were useful and doing good work . As Secretary of the Covent Garden Lodge of Instruction , held at the Criterion , Piccadilly , on Thursday evenings , Bro . J . D . Graham , their worthy W . M ., he could say , was a constant attendant , and their Preceptor , Bro . W . Brindley , whom he was glad to see present , would take care to assist and help their VV . M . to do

whatever work may be placed before him in a manner that would give satisfaction . The evening had been most pleasant and happy , and one to be remembered by a" . Ihe work was good , the banquet excellent , and the music enchanting , and in returning to town a universal opinion would be expressed from the visitors that they had Been given a most hearty welcome at the New Cross Lodge .

oro . vy . Brindley , P . M . 1601 , and Preceptor of the movent Garden Lodge of Instruction , thanked the W . M . fit k * ndness shown , and whatever he could do for any ot the members of the lodge as Preceptor , they could always rel y upon his assistance . * hW -M ., in proposing "The Health of the Treasurer l-Ai , t ecretar y > " said the Iodge was greatlv indebted to * rv 1 . r their services . doing so , Bro . Watson , who spoke for about an hour , and was listened to by the brethren with great attention , was assisted by several valuable Masonic MSS . and books . He referred to the fact that large quantities of Masonic books , MSS ., & c , had made their way to America , where they were carefully preserved . To avoid this , and to keep at home what was interesting to the members of the Craft ,

West Yorks had commenced the formation of a library at Wakefield , and in this work he and other brethren interested had received from Bro . T . W . Tew , the Prov . Grand Master , assistance of a practical and valuable character . Hc produced the T . VV . Tew MS ., which had been presented to the province by Bro . J . VV . Cocking , VV . M . 2035 . In the course of his address , Bro . Watson showed that

many of the traditions respecting Freemasonry had little real existence , and explained the attitude of the Ancients towards the Moderns . He showed that , in regard to the " old York working , " there had been many errors disseminated , and denied that it ever had a practical existence . The VV . M . moved— "That the best thanks of the lodge are due , and are hereby tendered , to Bro . W . Watson ,

P . M ., and W . M . Prudence Lodge , for his valuable lecture , and it hereby records its deep sense of the valuable services he has rendered to ( he province of West Yorks in his capacity of Hon . Librarian . " This was seconded by Bro . Gardiner , P . M ., and carried unanimously . Bro . Watson , P . M ., in reply , said that the work to him was a labour of love , but he received an additional stimulus in his pursuits when he found his efforts were appreciated by the brethren .

excellent , and showed that lodges of instruction were useful and doing good work . doing so , Bro .
