Rothesay Lodge , No . 1687 . The above Iodge went into deep mourning on the occasion of its last monthly meeting at the Frascati Restaurant . The recent Royal bereavement had a striking signification to the lodge , owing to the fact that it received its distinguished name by special dispensation from the Grand Master and present King Edward VII . In the absence of the W . M ., Bro . Louis Verdier , P . P . G . S ., through illness , the duties of W . Master were undertaken by the popular I . P . M ., Bro . Geo . llevbert-Burns . There were

two new candidates , one re-joining member , and three raisings . The candidates were Messrs . Louis Knowles and Joseph Sowden , who were initiated with impressive solemnity by Bro . Geo . Herbert-Burns , who also raised Bros . Potter , Besser , and Grahamslaw in the earnest and eloquent manner necessary to do full justice to the beautiful ritual . Bro . E . J . Davies was permitted to re-join the lodge under the new rule by paying one

guinea . On the motion of Bro . VV . C . Parsons , P . M ., seconded by Bro . T . J . Bolton , P . M ., Sec , a vote of condolence with the Royal Family was passed , and recorded on the minutes . The lodge also recorded its congratulations to the Duke of Rothesay on his accession to the Throne . Bro . Parsons , P . M ., brought to the notice of the lodge the candidature of Bro . Benjamin H . Swallow to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . The business of the lodge having been concluded .

Here a significant change was observed on the toast list . For the first time in the history of the Rothesay the toast of "The King and the Craft" occupied the premier position . It is needless to say that in the hands of such a fervent devotee of Alasonry as Bro . Geo . Herbert-Burns , I . P . M ., the Duke of Rothesay , in his exalted position as King Edward VII . of England , was toasted with the greatest enthusiasm , and with thc finest Masonic fire .

Bro . G . Herbert-Burns next proposed "The Initiates . " On behalf of the lodge he extended to them a very hearty welcome . He earnestly and sincerely trusted that the ceremonial of initiation had impressed them to an extent worthy of the grand old Craft of Freemasonry . _ Bro . Sowden admitted that the ceremonies had made a distinct impression on his mind and it would be his earnest endeavour to become a credit to the Craft .

Bro . Knowles thanked the W . M . and brethren for the kind manner in which they had drank to his health . It gave him great pleasure to have joined one of the best lodges in London . The acting Master then extended a hearty welcome to " The Visitors . " It was , he said , a curious coincidence that they had present that evening representatives of the oldest and youngest corporations in London . Bro . J . Tickell , P . M . of the Urban Ledge , was a member of the Common Council , one of the most ancient and honourable institutions in London , whilst Bro . Enos J . Howes , J . He never appealed to the biethren for a good cause in vain , as was evidenced by the subscription raised that evening for a distressed brother . ( Applause . )

Bro . Geo . Herbert-Burns , in proposing " The Officers , " remarked tbat however good a ship , and however excellent a skipper , it would avail nothing if the crew was not equally efficient . Bro . M ., " and said the brethren were well aware of Bro . Greenwood's efficiency in the work . There was no doubt the VV . M . would carry out the traditions of the lodge in a perfectly satisfactory manner , and whatever work was given him would be properly done .

Bro . Arthur Greenwood , VV . M ., thanked the I . P . M . for thj kind manner in which he had proposed the toast . As the lirst Master of their lodge in the new century , he could not do better than emulate the Masters of the old century . If he succeeded , the brethren would , perhaps , consider he had partly done his duty . With the assistance of the Past Masters and officers he hoped to hand to his successor his trust in the same unsullied and prosperous state in which he received it .

The W . M . then gave "The I . P . M ., " congratulating Bro . A . Kaufman on his successful year of ollice , and presenting him with a Past Master ' s jewel in recognition of his services , which they hoped he would wear for many years . Bro . A . Kaufman , I . P . M ., in reply , said he did not know how to sufficiently thank them for this mark of their esteem . He should wear it every time he entered the lodge to remind him of his happy year of office . He had only done his duty to this lodge—or had tried to do so . He had done the work to the best of his ability , and now that he

was free from the chair he would thank the officers who supported him during his term . He would remind them that it was the W . M . ' s intention of going up as Steward for the Boys' and Girls' Schools , and he hoped the members would send up as good lists as they did last year when he ( the I . P . M . ) acted in the same capacity . His total was 140 guineas collected from the members , and if the present W . M . would beat that sum , he ( the I . P . M . ) would be indeed gratilied . Bro . S . C . Kaufman , P . M ., Treas ., replying for "The Installing Master , " which

was brielly proposed by the W . M ., said it was not that the I . P . M . could not perform the duties , but , owing to the length of the programme , that he had installed the W . M . He had acted with a great amount of pleasure , and the I . P . M . had been ready to prompt him if necessary . He should be only too pleased to assist the W . M . whenever called upon , for he had resigned several other lodges to devote himself to the welfare of the St . Leonards .

" The Initiate " received a hearty reception , and was responded to by Bro . John Booter . "The Past Masters" was acknowledged by Bro . Prevost . Bros . F . Dunstan , P . P . G . D . C . Middx . ; Toye , P . M . ; G . Cunnington , P . M . ; W . S . Harvey , P . M . j and Bean , P . M ., acknowledged " The Visitors . " The toasts of " The Treasurer and Secretary " and " The Ollicers " concluded the programme .

Bro . H . Prenton , Org ., directed the musical arrangements , and was assisted by Miss Bertha Geider , Miss Edythe Kemp , Miss Ethelwynne Weaver , and Bros . Elliston Webb , and VV . F . Cheesman .

The Auditors' Report was adopted and the lodge closed .

After banquet , " The King and the Craft" and " The Grand Officers " were duly honoured . Bro . A . Kaufman , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the W .

F . Cheesman .
