Annual Ball Of The Surrey Masonic Hall And Dagmar Lodges.

ANNUAL BALL OF THE SURREY MASONIC HALL AND DAGMAR LODGES .

The members of the Surrey Masonic Hall Lodge , No . 1539 , and the Dagmar Lodge , No . 2262 , held their annual ball at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell New-road , on Wednesday evening , the 13 th inst . The handsome hall was transformed into a picturesque bower , and presented a bright and attractive

appearance . The company numbered over 100 . The programme consisted of 24 round and set dances , the music for which was contributed by Mr . Charles Hann ' s excellent quadrille band . There was no sign of awkwardness , of nervousness , or of out-of-placeness amongst the dancers ; every one seemed to be perfectly easy and at home , and to be enjoying himself or

herself to the fullest extent . During the early part of the evening the ladies outnumbered the gentlemen , but towards midnight the merry Masons turned up in strong force after having completed their day ' s labours , and , like the sons of King Alcinous in " The Odyssey , " put on " war paint " for the dance . Bro . Fred Williams and Bro . James A .

Cannon made very efficient M . C . ' s , and in their hands everything went " swimmingly . " At the supper many complimentary things were said of Bros . W . G . Cannon , I . P . M . 2262 , and W . Malham , I . P . M . 1539 , who are responsible for the holding of this happy annual ball . Bro . R . J . MULLIS , W . M . 1539 , proposed " Success to

the Combined Lodges , which was enthusiastically drunk . Bro . W . MALHAM , who responded first , said this was the second ball that had taken place in connection , or rather in conjunction , with those two Masonic lodges , and he hoped these dances would continue to be held each year . Bro . CANNON also responded . The Surrey Masonic

Hall Lodge and the Dagmar Lodge were now , he said , so blended together , that they had become almost one lodge . He hoped they would continue in that friendl y spirit for many years to come . He felt delighted at seeing such a large number of ladies and gentlemen present , and hoped they were all enjoying themselves . Continuing , Bro . Cannon explained that each year the

Dagmar Lodge held an outing up the river , and concluded by inviting the members of the Surrey Masonic Hall to take part in it . He felt sure they would spend an enjoyable day . Bro . INNES proposed "The Ladies , " which was responded to by Bro . GEORGE NASH . During the evening songs were rendered by Mr .

BRO . T . WILSON-WEBB . A highly respected inhabitant of Brightlingsea , Essex passed away on Monday , the 4 th inst ., in the person of Bro . T . Wilson-Webb , builder . Deceased , who was 62 years old , had been ailing through the winter , and died of consumption . He was a member of the Freemason-. Lodge Hope , No . 433 , and had served in the capacity of Tyler to the lodge for nearly 20 years . The funeral

took place on Saturday amid every mark of respect , though owing to the influenza epidemic the number of Masons preceding the cortege was only 15 . The service was conducted by the Rev . A . Pertwee , Chaplain to the lodge , and the hymn ( from Ancient and Modern ) " Thy will be done , " was sung . At the close of the service at the grave-side , the Masons dropped their emblems upon the coffin .
