Earl of Carnarvon Lodge , No . 1642-PRESENTATION TO BRO . REUBEN C . GREEN , P . M ., LATE SECRETARY . M . 1293 ; W . Ellis , W . M . S 24 ; and W . VV . Lee , P . M . 23 S 1 .
The minutes were confirmed , and Bros . II . Ii . Manfield ana A . E . Owers were raised to the Degree of Master Mison . Triis wis cirricd out by the VV . M ., liro . G : o . Davis , in a very impressive manner , fully maintaining hisposiiion as one of the foremost Preceptois in the metropolis . I'hu VV . M ., in miking the presentation to Bro . R . C . Green , P . M ., expressed the gratification he felt at doing so . The members had liberally subscribed towards that testimonial , which hid been so arranged that there
was a uniform subscription . He knew Bro . Green would appreciate the kindly feelings which prompted the gift , and receive it in the same spirit—is a token of their regard and alfeclion . They all appreciated Bro . Green ' s lurd work during the many years he hid been Secretary , and also the kindness sho . vn by him in the perfarmonce of his duths . They hoped he would live many yea's to possess that present , and wear it in remembrarre ot the members ,
The watch bears on the outer case Bro . Green ' s crest , and inside the following inscription : " Presented to Bro . Reuben Charles Green by the members of the Eirl ot Camaivon Lodge , No . 1 C 42 . March , 1901 . " Bro . R . C . Green , P . M ., said it had come as a surprise to him that th ? . presentation rod been made in open lodge , but he regarded that as an additional compliment . He thanked them all sinceiely , and reserved lurlher remarks until a later period .
A resolution was placed on tie mnutcs expressing the sorrow of the members at the dett ' i 11 tne late Queen Victoria , and lod ^ e was clo ed . AUer an excellent repast the usual tuasts were honoured ,
Bro . VV . H . Handover , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the W . Master , " and referred briefly to the W . M . 's able working in the lodge . Bro . Geo . Davis , VV . M ., in his reply , said it was a great pleasure to preside over such a distinguished lodge , especially as he had been for many years a member , working amongst them , and duing all he could to improve the character of the lodge , and also the working by means of the lodge of instruction . It was mjny vears since the lodge was consecrated , and the only two founders present were Bros . Parkhouse , P . M ., and
Lander , P . M ., and he himself was the only brother present who was a visitor at that consecration . Both these P . Ms , had done good suit and service for more than 20 years in keeping up the prestige of the lodge . As Preceptor in another place he hid done what he could to increase the high stindird of working in the lodge . This had been spoken of in other lodges , and especially by visitors , whom they were alwiys pleased to see . He thanked them for the hearty manner in which they received the toast of his health .
The VV . M . then proceeded to give " The Health of Bro . R . C Green , P . M ., " the brother whom they were especially honouring that evening , and said he felt pleased that that b-other appreciated the fict that the presentation was made in open lodge . It was far more appropriate for a brother , receiving a gift as a mirk of grati ' . u le fron his brother Masons , to receive that gift in open lodge than at the banquet table . They all hoped Bro . Green would live many years to appreciate that small token of thsir esteem and prize it . For 10 years Bro . Green was their faithful Secretary , and although
it was the province of a W . M . to appoint a Secretary , no Master had thought fit to appoint any other brother whilst Bro . Green was willing to serve . Bro . Green , however , had taken advantage of his ( Bro . Davis ' s ) occupancy of the chair to give up his duties , having had a desire to do so for some time past . Although Bro . Green had left office , he would be with them to give his advice and assistance . He asked the brethren to drink the toast heartily , and give Bro . Green an opportunity of making the remarks he had promised in the lodge and which they would all be pleased to hear .
Bro . R . C Green , P . M ., said it was a difficult task to endeavour to thank themofficers and members—for the very kind and cordial manner in which his name had been received . He belonged to that branch of a profession which was not renowned far oratorical powers . They made a succinct statement of facts to place in the hands of eminent counsel , to prove or disprove their client ' s case . He hoped therefore they would appreciate what he said as coming honestly from his heart . When a man accepted the duties of honorary office , he should discharge them without expecting
anything else but thanks from the members , because in accepting them he wished to render some service to a society of men , and to be associated prominently with them . That was his view when he accepted office . It would be idle for him to suggest that the office was a sinecure . The duties were arduous , and the members would be surprised if they knew the work of a Secretary of a lodge having 65 members . It would be unfair to his successor if he did not make that statement . Most of the brethren knew the reason he gave up the office , but to make a bull , there was no reason . There was the opportunity , as the Wardens were not going on , of retiring , and he asked Bro . Davis
to allow him to resign . He hoped to be able to enjoy the privileges of membership for many years . He was indebted to Bro . Ellis for the cate he had taken in the production ol the handsome testimonial . He also thanked the Secretary for the additional duties this present had thrown upon him , and also the Committee carrying it out . His radical views as to presentations for honorary service had been dispelled , and he was more than gratified and pleased at the very great compliment paid hi . n . " The Visitors " was duly honoured , and was followed by other toasts before the pleasant proceedings terminated .
