n G . He esteemed ¦ ere highly the rank which he held under the Grand 1 odze of England , and with the further knowledge
vhich he had gained during his term of office as Governor , he would always retain the kindest recollections of the years he had spent in this bright and magnificent land and climate . It was , he said , kind of Rro . Graham to refer to his efforts in regard to Freemasonry . He had done but little , but that was not owing to want of inclination , but want of opportunity ,
to do g 00 " . "is memory would be brightened by the recollection of the hospitality that had been offered to him by his Masonic brethren in New Zealand , and his obligations were now increased by that evening ' s proceedings . He esteemed very highly the rank which he bad under the Grand Lodge of England , and still greater the honour done him by her Majesty the Queen
in sending him to occupy the position of Governor of this colony . He could not help referring to the great Joss the Craft had met with in the death of the Duke of Clarence , a prince who was bidding fair to have a noble career as a Mason , for Masonry was under many obligations to Royalty and the Royal Family . The
good impression he had received on landing in Auckland had been increased by the kindness with which they now bade him farewell . The choir sang " Home , Sweet Home . " Dr . KIDD at the close delivered a most eloquent prayer for the welfare and prosperity of Lord and Lady Onslow and family , and wishing them a long and useful career .
The Theatres.
The Theatres .
The Alhambra has always been looked upon as "The Home of the Ballet" for long before dancing of this description was given anywhere else , and our country brethren , as well as cousins , when they came to London visited the Alhambra . Bros . Col . Ward , 2312 , and W . Sutton , 8 , and their co-directors have
just engaged Mr . John Hollingshead , who has so long been before the public as a manager and lessee , to be acting manager of this popular place of entertainment . just now Miss Annie Abbott is a great attraction . We shall not offer an opinion as to whether she possesses powers of magnetism or physical strength , or whether
the committee who are on the stage are confederates or not . A distinguished Mason has written to the Times and given his opinion . We do say that Miss Abbott draws crowds every night to witness her feats . Mr . Fawn , the comic singer , Lieut . Travis , the ventriloquist , and others give short entertainments
but after all everyone goes to the Alhambra to see the ballet . Just now there are two , " On the Ice " and "Temptation "; the latter—a good title for it—is so atlractive and pretty that it causes temptation to go and see it many times . Bro . Jacobi has written bewitching music , the chief danseuses are so graceful
in their movements , the chorus are so well drilled , and the tout ensemble is so grand , that one almost fancies oneself in fairy land . "Temptation" is rommtic ; "On the Ice" is funny . The dance of Quakers and Quakeresses to the tune of" Boom-de-ay " is ludicrous in the extreme . Such skilful artistes as Signorina Elia and Cristino and Signor Biancifiori and Mdlle .
Zimmerman dance admirably , and meet with their due meed of applause . Whatever attractions other places may have , it cannot be denied that the old Alhambra , the parent of ballets in London , is unrivalled in its beauty , taste , * "" i style . With Mr . Hollingshead as manager it '"' glit to hold its head up above all other such places .

THE SHADWELL CLERKE TRUST .
FREEMASONS' HALL , GREAT QUEEN STREET , W . C , Sth February , 1 S 92 . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , VVe regret to inform you that the Widow of our late much lamented Grand Secretary , Col . Shadwell H .
Clerke , has been left very inadequately provided for . A Committee of Grand Officers and others , who have had many opportunities of knowing how conscientiously , efficiently and courteously Col . Clerke discharged all the duties of his Important office , and the eminent services he has rendered to Masonry , has been formed for the purpose of inviting Lodges and Brethren to show their appreciation
of his high character and services by joining with them in raising a Fund for the purchase of a Government Life Annuity for Mrs . Clerke . We send herewith a List of the Committee who have already given their names , to which additions are solicited . The Most Worshipful Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom ; the R . W . Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of
Mount Edgcumbe ; and Sir Albert W . Woods ( Garter ) , P . G . W ., G . D . C , have kindly consented to act as Trustees , and an account will be opened immediately in their names at the Bloomsbury Branch of the London and Westminster Bank . Personal Subscriptions are limited to a maximum of £ 5 SS . In the case of Lodges , Chapters , and other Masonic
Bodies there is no limit . Cheques are requested to be sent , addressed to the Treasurer , Bro . Robert Grey , Freemasons ' Hall , Great Queen-street , W . C , made payable to him , and crossed "London and Westminster Bank , Bloomsbury Branch , o / a Shadwell Clerke Trust . "
Inasmuch as Bro . George Kenning has kindly undertaken to insert advertisements in the Freemason free of expense , and as the cost of Printing , Stationery , Postage and Receipt Stamps , & c , will be paid by Members of the Committee , the whole amount of Subscriptions , without any deduction , will be available for the proposed object .
We remain , Dear Sir and Brother , Yours fraternally , THOMAS FENN , Pres . B . of G . P ., Chairman . ROBERT GREY , Pres . B . of B ., Treasurer . FRANK RICHARDSON , P . G . D ., Secretary .
"SHADWELL CLERKE TRUST . " To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , The reference in the newspapers to Col . Shadwell Gierke ' s will having caused some misconception as to the income left to Mrs . Clerke , we think it right to state that we have been furnished with a list
of the securities in which the personal estate was invested . Their value at present prices is . £ 10 , 461 8 s . This includes the £ 1000 mentioned in the will , of which Mrs . Clerke has the testamentary disposition , and also a policy for £ 1000 , payment of which is in question . The sum of ^ 10 , 461 8 s . invested in securities suitable for trusts would yield a yearly income of £ 310 .
Out of this by the will £ 100 a year is to be paid to each of the sons , and the balance to Mrs . Clerke on condition she provides a home for and maintains the daughter . Should the policy money not be received , the balance will be reduced to £ 80 a year . Mrs . Clerke has a small entailed property of her own in Ireland which brings in a precarious income , the
average of the last two years being £ 133 ios . So far as we are able to learn , the whole of her income will therefore be either £ 243 or £ 213 to provide a home and maintain herself and daughter , which is sufficient to show that for a lady in her position she " has been left very inadequately provided for . "
When the will was read it was believed that Mrs . Clerke was left a life interest in her husband ' s real estate in Ireland , but this appears not to have been legally carried out , and it is to fulfil , to some extent , the evident intention of Col . Clerke that " The Shadwell Clerke Trust" has been formed .
The brethren to whom our circular was addressed are reminded that the case was not put before them as one of Charity , nor were they solicited for subscriptions . They were invited to join with the Committee in testifying by the purchase of a life annuity for Mrs . Clerke "their appreciation of Col . Gierke ' s high character and services . FREEMASONS' HALL , GREAT QUEEN STREET , W . C , Sth February , 1 S 92 . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , VVe regret to inform you that the Widow of our late much lamented Grand Secretary , Col . Shadwell H .
