These constitute in themselves a most valuable record in the case of a lodge which has enjoyed so brief an existence , while the illustrations—which include a portrait of the late Col . Stewart ,

M . s jewel of the lodge in coloursare not the least among the many attractions which this neatly-bound , as well as excellently-printed , volume possesses . Major Leslie ' s work , the statements we have already made will show that we most cordially agree . adjourned to the banquet . After the loyal toasts and those of the "Grand Oflicers " were duly honoured , for whom Bro . Terry briefly responded , Bro . Seage proposed "The Health of the W . M . " referring to his past work as a criterion for his future conduct of the lodge , to which Bro . Burges brief ! *¦ replied . In replying to the toast of " Installing Master , " Bro . Seage said : that Masonry was with him a . work of love , and he was sure the W . M . for the present year was one he was proud to instal into the chair .

In replying for "the Visitors , " Bro . Adams said he was an old p ' aymate and friend of Bro . Seage , and he owed much to the Merchant Navy Lodge tor w ' nt he kne w of Masonry , through Bro . Lancett , the Preceptor of the Duke of Edinburgh Lodg :. Bro . Olley referred to the Merchant Navy Lodge as a school for Masonic knowledge , and was sure the W . M . 's work of that evening was an evidence of what he would do later . Bro . Parrett said he hoped that the good feeling between the two lodges would always be maintained .

Bros . Limn , Montagu , T . Blyth , and others , added a few words . In responding for the "Masonic Charities , " Bro . Terry alluded to the splendid way in which the Merchant Navy Lodge had always come to the front . On the last occasion they had especially distinguished themselves , for out of a grand total of £ 20 , 000 , thiy had contributed one-twentieth . The remaining toasts were drunk with the usual honours .

. Bro . Nelson was presented with an address on vellum for his work towards the Charities , and , in returning thanks , said he would be glad to represent the lodge again under such auspices .

Paxton Lodge , No . 1686 . The installation meeting of this South London lodge was held on the 9 th inst ., at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell New-road , and was well attended . congratulations of the brethren . The new W . M . then presented a Past Master ' s jewel to Bro . C . W . Mayo , I . P . M ., as a mark of respect and esteem in which he was held by the members , and he paid a tribute to the great duties he had performed as Master of the Paxton Lodge . The inscription on the jewel was— " Presented to Bro . C . VV . Mayo , I . M ., by the members of the Paxton Lodge , No . 1 CS 6 , for efficient services as W . M . May , 1896 . " In acknowledging the jewel , Bro . Mayo , in a few words , expressed his hearty thanks .

The lodge was afterwards closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet , which was supplied by Mrs . Venables . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been duly honoured , The I . P . M ., Bro . C . W . Mayo , proposed " The Health of the Worshipful Master . " He stated that great things were expected of Bro . Allen , and 12 months hence th : members would not be disappointed . Those who new him best loved him the most , and he felt sure that no one would ever regret the choice they had made in electing one

so competent , who would be able to do everything asked of him . The toast was enthusiastically received , as was Bro . Allen , W . M ., on rising tc respond . He said that the usual practice in giving a toast was to siy everything complimentary , and then came the response , which was to negative the words of the Proposer . Bro . Mayo had said very little of him ( the W . M . ) but only to predict what he might do , which he thought was somewhat vague , but he hoped that at the end of h's year of oflice their verdict would be that he had been a success . He wis proud , honoured , and gratified to be the W . M ., but he was not conceited as he had done very

little to attain his high position . He was unable to express in words what he then felt , but he should never forget the responsibilities of his exalted office and he hoped to hand to his successor what he had received pure and unblemished . In giving "The Installing and Immediate Past Master , Bro . C . W . Mayo , " the W . M . stated that it was with unfeigned pleasure he submitted the toast . It was impossible for those who had seen Bro . Mivo ' s work to exaggerate his great qualities , and the ritual had never been better carried out . He was a thorough M ison at heart

and being a very busy man he had not had much time for Masonry , but yet he had made himself proficient . He had been ill and instead of taking a wall-deserved rest he had worked hard to be perfect in the ritual and he had excelled himself . Might he have many years to adorn the Paxton Lodge . He was the Preceptor of two lodgesof instruction , and he knew no one better able to instruct , and he was always glad to impart his great knowledge in Masonry to all who came to him for instruction . In response , Bro . C . W . Mayo , I . P . M ., thanked the W . M . for his very kind words ,

and observed that the lodge had been practically in his hands for a year and nine months , in consequence of the death of a VV . M . three months after he was installed , and he was glad that things had gone on so smoothly during his reign . The jewel would ever remind him of his happy connection with the lodge , and the kindnesses he had always received from his officers and all the members . The W . M . gave "The Past Masters , " and said they were the pioneers and the record of the lodge . He was glad that Bro . J . M . Klenck , the founder and " father "

of the lodge , was present , as he would be able to tell them all about the lod * re from its consecration . He also referred to Bro . H . E . Frances , who , he remarked , did not attend often enough , but they were always pleased to have him there with them . Then , as to Bro . T . Harrington , P . M ., who had an honoured name in the lodge , he initiated him ( the W . M . ) , and he should never forget the night of his initiation , which would linger long in his memory as one of the brightest nights of his existence . The W . M . also made special mention of Past Masters Bros . C . H . Bryson , F . W . Oldfield , and C . S . Damant .

Bro . J . M . Klenck , P . M ., said that as the founder and the oldest Past Mister it afforded him much pleasure to respond to the toast . He then gave some interesting details of the formation of the lodge , and regretted that several of the Past Misters he had seen installed had gone over to the great majority . For 13 years there had been only two deaths amongst the Past Masters , but the last seven years they had lost four Past Masters . He congratulated the W . M . on his high position , and he wished him a happy and prosperous year of office . Bro . C . H . Bryson , P . M ., also acknowledged the toast , remarking that everything

that had been said of the Past Masters—himself , of course , excluded—was not m ore than they deserved . They all appreciated the W . M ., who had sound judgment , was of easy manner , and courteous address , and there was little doubt he would have a brilliant term of office . He concluded his speech in a very humorous strain . In submitting the toast of "The Visitors , " the Worshi p ful Master stated thit it was one of the highest importance in Freemasonry and hospitality wis the outcome of human kindness . He assured those who had done them the honour of attending that they

had a very hearty welcome . Visitors were like friendly critics , for whatever they saw good , was applauded by them , and what was bad they accepted with toleration , and he hoped they would forgive any shortcomings they had seen in him as Master . They had a great number of guests , among whom were Bros . Nelson Prower , who wis a scholar and well advanced in Masonry , which beloved . He also made special mention of Bro . Ferguson , P . M ., and he took that opportunity of thanking him for several acts of kindness which he had received at his hands , as within the last two or three weeks he knew nothing of

the installation ceremony ; but Bro . Ferguson had made him somewhat presentable thit evening . The W . M . also referred to Bros . Defries and Buchanan , and , in conclusion , he earnestly hoped that all the visitors would look back to that night with a pleasant memory . He joined with the toast the names of Bros . W . J . Ferguson , P . M . ; Nelson Prower , and N . Defries , P . M . Bro . W . J . Ferguson , P . M ., responded . He said that it was the first time he had the pleasure of visiting the Surrey Masonic Hall , and should carry away a pleasing recollection of that night's proceedings . The visitors had had a happy time , which was not to be wondered at , looking to the kindly feeling that appeared to exist all round ,

from the W . M . downwards . If he had been of any assistance to the W . M . he was gatified , and he felt that he could not resume his seat without referring to the grand working of the I . P . M ., Bro . Mayo . Bro . Nelson Prower said that he appreciated his name having been associated with the toast , but he regretted he had been called upon to respond , because there were present more competent and better Masons than he . The W . M . was a very old friend of his , and he was honoured by seeing him installed . Bro . N . Defries , P . M ., also responded , which he did in eloquent terms .

The toast of "The Treasurer , Secretary , and Officers" was next given by the W . M ., who observed that no W . M . could feel more than he did the importance of having such excellent officers , and he had every confidence in them . He mentioned the Treasurer , Bro . C . S . Damant , P . M ., who enjoyed the high respect and esteem of every member of the lodge . Then , as to Bro . Ansell , P . M ., the Secretary , he was a tried and trusted member , one who had Freemasonry at heart , and he had to thank him for

many kindnesses , and for his great services ; he was , in fact , the general utility man of the lodge . He also referred to the other officers , whom , he ventured to think , could not be better in any other lodge in London . Bro . C . S . Damant , P . M ., Treas ., responded , observing that the W . M . had spoken of him in such flittering terms , that it brought blushes to his cheek , and made him as timid as anew Mason . As Treasurer , it afforded him much pleasure to see the improved position of the lodge , which had risen from a state of poverty to one of allljence .

Bro . H . Ansell , P . M ., Secretary , said that he was honoured by again having been appointed Secretary , and he would continue to do his utmost to promote the interests of the lodge and the happiness of the brethren . Bros . J . L . Stein , J . W ., and J . Parker , S . D ., also responded , and the Tyler's toast ended a very successful evening . Bro . Fred . L . Thorpe was in charge of the musical arrangements , and was assisted by Bros . W . Rogers , H . Humphreys , Mr . Walter Grace , Miss C . Maud West , and Madame Emilie Brooke . Bro .
