PROVINCIAL GREAT PRIORY OF KENT AND SURREY .

The annual meeting of the above was held at Canterbury , on the 15 th inst ., under the banner of the Black Prince Preceptory . The members of Provincial Priory were met at the stations by Sir Knight Ward , P . E . P ., and entertained at lunch at the Fountain Hotel , after which a Priory of Malta was opened at the beautiful Masonic Temple , and five sir knights were inducted into that Order in most impressive style by Sir Knights Ward and Rev . H .

Cummings . The Black Prince Preceptory having been opened and the routine business transacted Sir Knight Harris was installed in the chair of E . P ., and the officers for the ensuing year were appointed and invested . The chair was then taken by V . E . Sir Knight Col . G . H . Haldane , Sub . Prior , in the regretted absence , through ill-health , of the V . E . Prov . Prior , Sir Knight Gen . J . S .

Brownrigg , C . B . Provincial Priory having been duly opened and muster roll called , a fine was inflicted on an officer absent without excuse , in accordance with the bylaws of the Province , and the minutes of last Provincial Priory at Lullingstone were read and duly confirmed . Many letters of apology for absence were read , and the Treasurer ' s report was then presented and approved . Sir Knight Bateman was unanimously reelected Treasurer . The acting Prov . Prior then announced

that he had been re-appointed Sub Prior , and proceeded to apppoint and invest the following as the Prov . officers for tire year . Sir Knight Cummings Prov . Prelate . „ Holtum Prov . Sub-Prior , Sir Knight Haldane , presided in his wellknown genial manner , and a banquet of the most recherche character that would have done honour to the most

celebrated London caterers , and was praised by Sir Knight Ward , who proved himself ( not for the first time ) to be as good a host as he is a Mason . Time being short on account of the early hour of the return trains , the toasts were brief but to the point , and so ended one of the most successful meetings ever held in the province . The hospitality of the entertaining preceptory was unbounded , and

the arrangements in every way admirable . Among those present were Sir Knights Haldane , Cummings , Dr . Penfold , Bateman , F . Laurence , Dr . Weddell , Major F . S . Complimentary Dinnner And Presentation To Bro. Berther.

COMPLIMENTARY DINNNER AND PRESENTATION TO BRO . BERTHER .

Those of our readers who have been in the habit of dining at Freemasons' Tavern during the past two or three years cannot fail to have notice the marked improvement which has taken place in every department of this noted house—owing principally to the skilful management of Bro . Madell , but in no small degree to the assistance afforded him by his first lieutenant , Bro . Berther—who we were

net surprised at hearing a short time since had secured a wider field for his energies in the management of the Cannon-street Hotel . A few of his friends , who had known him both as the deputy manager of the Tavern and previously in the same capacity at the Criterion , arranged to present him with some little token of their goodwill on his assuming his new position , and decided to invite

Bro . Berther to a dinner , which came off on Wednesday evening at the Cannon-street Hotel . The chair was occupied by Bro . J . L . Mather , who was supported by Bros . J . Terry , C . F . Hogard , F . Binckes , J . Barnett , jun ., and others , numbering in all about 50 . The usual toasts were proposed , and that of "The Guest of the Evening" was given by the CHAIRMAN in

very feeling terms . He spoke of the high esteem in which Bro . Berther was held by all who had come in contact with him , and predicted for him a successful career . Bro . BERTHERsuitably replied , mentioning amongst other things how much he was indebted to his former chiefs , Bros . Madell and Bertini , who , on their part , later in the evening , testified to the good qualities of their late deputy ,

who had , they said , ably and faithfully carried out the duties entrusted to him , and secured the respect and friendship of all with whom he had been connected . During the evening the Chairman presented to the guest , in the names of those present , a very handsome gold watch , which bore the following inscription : " Presented to J . A . Berther , Esq ., on the occasion of his appointment

as manager of the Cannon-street Hotel , at a banquet given in his honour by a number of sincere friends and admirers . J . L . Mather , Chairman ; John Barnett , jun ., Hon . Sec . June 20 th , 18 S 8 . " The other toasts were— "The Health of the Chairman , Bro . J . L . Mather , " and "The Hon . Sec , Bro . J . Barnett , " and there were speeches from Bros . Binckes ,

Terry , Madell , Bertini , and others . Altogether it was a very enjoyable evening , and augurs well for the future of the new manager . The table was lavishly decorated with flowers , which had been arranged with thoughtful and kindly care by the lessee , Mrs . Spencer j and songs and recitations also contributed to the pleasures of those present .

Obituary.

Obituary .

BRO . S . B . OLDHAM , DEP . G . SECRETARY AND TREASURER ( IRELAND ) . The late Bro . Samuel B . Oldham , to whose death we briefly referred last week , had been officially connected with the Grand Lodge of Ireland for many years , having been its Assistant Secretary when the Prince of Wales was invested as Patron of the Order in that country , in 1871 ,

and having a few years later been promoted to the higher and more responsible office of Deputy Grand Secretary and Treasurer . In this position he had rendered most valuable services to the Craft , and indeed had been virtually the principal executive officer of the Grand Lodge of Ireland for the last dozen years . He was also Grand Registrar of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ireland ; the senior Past Sovereign and Secretary of Chapter No . 5 , of

Prince Masons , Dublin ; honorary member of the Abbey Chapter , No . 11 , Boyle ; and Assistant Secretary General of the Grand Chapter of the same ; and had taken the 31 in the Ancient and Accepted Rite . His death will be a very great loss to the Grand Lodge , while we may judge of the respect in which he was held by the Craft generally from the large number of brethren who attended his funeral in order to pay their last tribute of respect to his memory .

Bro . Sir Algernon and Lady Borthwick entertained the members of the Fulham Cyclist Club at dinner at Heath House , Hampstead Heath , on Saturday evening last . The Prince and Princess of Wales and their family returned to Marlborough ^ House from Sunningdale House on Friday , the 15 th inst ., in consequence of the news received of the late Emperor Frederick's condition , and in

the afternoon the Prince , and his son , Prince Albert Victor , called at the German Embassy , and expressed their condolences on the death of his Imperial Majesty . On Saturday evening the Prince and Princess , with Prince Albert Victor , left Charing Cross Station by special train for Dover , en route to Berlin , where they arrived late on Sunday evening , in order to attend the late Emperor ' s funeral the day following .

PROVINCIAL GREAT PRIORY OF KENT AND SURREY .

The members of Provincial Priory were met at the stations by Sir Knight Ward , P . E . celebrated London caterers , and was praised by Sir Knight Ward , who proved himself ( not for the first time ) to be as good a host as he is a Mason . Time being short on account of the early hour of the return trains , the toasts were brief but to the point , and so ended one of the most successful meetings ever held in the province .
