The monthly meeting of the Board of Benevolence was held on Wednesday evening at Freemasons' Hall . Bro . Robert Grey , President ; Bro . James Brett , Senior Vice-President ; " and Bro . C . A . Cottebrune , Junior Vice-President , occupied their respective positions . Bro . E . Letchworth , Grand Secretary ; Bro . W . Dodd , and Bro . W . H . Lee , represented Grand Secretary ' s

office , and tliere were also present Bros . Dr . Strong , W . P . Brown , H . Garrod , S . Vallentine , S . V . Abraham , Charles Dairy , H . Massey , George Read , D . D . Mercer , C . J . Tijou , T . W . Whitmarsh , J . A . Farnfield , Geo . B . Chapman , James Bunker , Thos . S . Cox , George R . Langley , G . Coop , A . C . Woodward , John M . Stedwell , Robert A . Gowan , W . The brethren first confirmed recommendations made to the Grand Master at the June meeting to the extent ° f £ m - There were only 23 cases on the list , the smallest number known for a long time . Eight of them were deferred from last meeting . These were qualified through lodges in London , Berkeley , Surbiton , Dartford , New Mills , West Hartlepool , Bridlington ,

Oswestry , Lincoln , York , Plymouth , Jamaica , Carlisle , Devonport , Honiton , Calcutta , Hampton Court , and Bermuda . Two of these cases were deferred , not being complete , and one petition was dismissed . A total sum of , £ 485 was voted to the remaining 20

petitioners . A recommendation to Grand Lodge to grant £ 60 was made in one case , and , 650 in another ; two recommendations of ^ o each , four of , 630 each , and one of . £ 25 were made to the Grand Master ; five grants were made of ^ 20 each , four of , £ ' 10 each , and two of ; 65 each .

Summer Entertainment At Croydon.

SUMMER ENTERTAINMENT AT CROYDON .

Thc annual summer entertainment given to the inmates of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at Croydon took place on Tuesday , the 19 th inst ., when a large company journeyed from Cannon-street to assist in giving amusement to the Old People . The bad weather must have kept a good many brethren away ,

SI-RAKK , who said he should be happy to be of any use in providing for the enjoyment of the Old People on any future occasion .

SUMMER OUTING OF THE ST . GEORGE'S LODGE , No . 140 .

On Friday , the 15 th inst ., the members of the above lodge , accompanied by several Masonic visitors had a most enjoyable coach drive to Sevenoaks . The affair was organised by the W . M ., Bro . John Shepherd , very valuable assistance being given by the esteemed

Secretary of the lodge , Bro . George Brown , P . M . On arriving at the Royal Crown Hotel luncheon was partaken of , and the party proceeded to Knole House the well known seat of Lord Sackville , where they inspected the various rooms , works of art , and antiquities which are to be seen in thisold . English mansion . On returning to the hotel , a photographic group of

the party was taken as a memento of the occasion after which dinner was announced , this being hailed by the majority of the brethren with lively satisfaction " The Health of the W . M . " and "The Visitors " were drunk with hearty good wishes , the venerable and greatly beloved father of the lodge , Bro . W . Noak ,

P . M ., receiving quite an ovation on the proposal of his health , the W . M . informing the brethren that this was in a sense the Silver Wedding year of Bro . Noak , he having been the Master of St . George ' s Lodge just 25 years ago . An exceedingly pleasant drive back to New Cross wound up the sociable brotherly gathering .

enthusiasm , and Bros . VOISEY and DAVIS replied . Bros . Voisey , Briant , Keys , Donaldson , Braik , and others enlivened the proceedings with songs , & c , and a most enjoyable evening was spent . The lodge will re-open on the first Tuesday in September .

The brethren first confirmed recommendations made to the Grand Master at the June meeting to the extent ° f £ m - There were only 23 cases on the list , the smallest number known for a long time . Eight of them were deferred from last meeting . These were qualified through lodges in London , Berkeley , Surbiton , Dartford , New Mills , West Hartlepool , Bridlington ,

Oswestry , Lincoln , York , Plymouth , Jamaica , Carlisle , Devonport , Honiton , Calcutta , Hampton Court , and Bermuda . Two of these cases were deferred , not being complete , and one petition was dismissed . A total sum of , £ 485 was voted to the remaining 20

petitioners . A recommendation to Grand Lodge to grant £ 60 was made in one case , and , 650 in another ; two recommendations of ^ o each , four of , 630 each , and one of . £ 25 were made to the Grand Master ; five grants were made of ^ 20 each , four of , £ ' 10 each , and two of ; 65 each .

Thc annual summer entertainment given to the inmates of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at Croydon took place on Tuesday , the 19 th inst ., when a large company journeyed from Cannon-street to assist in giving amusement to the Old People . The bad weather must have kept a good many brethren away ,

On Friday , the 15 th inst ., the members of the above lodge , accompanied by several Masonic visitors had a most enjoyable coach drive to Sevenoaks . The affair was organised by the W . M ., Bro . John Shepherd , very valuable assistance being given by the esteemed

Secretary of the lodge , Bro . George Brown , P . M . On arriving at the Royal Crown Hotel luncheon was partaken of , and the party proceeded to Knole House the well known seat of Lord Sackville , where they inspected the various rooms , works of art , and antiquities which are to be seen in thisold . English mansion . On returning to the hotel , a photographic group of

the party was taken as a memento of the occasion after which dinner was announced , this being hailed by the majority of the brethren with lively satisfaction " The Health of the W . M . " and "The Visitors " were drunk with hearty good wishes , the venerable and greatly beloved father of the lodge , Bro . W . Noak ,

P . M ., receiving quite an ovation on the proposal of his health , the W . M . informing the brethren that this was in a sense the Silver Wedding year of Bro . Noak , he having been the Master of St . George ' s Lodge just 25 years ago . An exceedingly pleasant drive back to New Cross wound up the sociable brotherly gathering .
