M . in chargej HowardH . Room , P . G . Sec . j and others . The lodge was then closed , and an excellent banquet was ivell served under the superintendence of Bro . Gedda , The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were afterwards

heartily honoured . The Worshipful Master , in proposing "The Grand Oflicers , " having alluded to the Pro G . M . and Deputy G . M ,, said the lodge was honoured that evening by the presence of three distinguished Grand Officers . He had had frequent opportunities of remarking the esteem and regard in which Bro . Philbrick was held in a neighbourinff

province—Essex—of which he was the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , and he was assured that that feeling was only equalled by the love and affection which the Craft generally felt for the Grand Registrar of England . Bro . Letchworth had won golden opinions since his appointment as Grand Secretary , and although it had been said that no brother would ever attain the popularity of his predecessor

in that office , yet Bro . Letchworth had made rapid strides towards attaining the impossible . With regard to Bro . Jas . Terry , P . G . S . B ., that brother represented an Institution which held the record for the largest total ever announced at the festival of a charitable institution . Bro . E . Letchworth , Grand Secretary , in response , ex-1 'iessed his gratification in visiting the lodge , and also of

feeing his friend and colleague , Bro . VV . II . Lee , P . M ., install his son into the chair in such a masterly manner . He thanked the brethren for the honour conferred upon him by electing him an honorary member , and assured them he was pleased to occupy a position in the Bushey Park Lodge which was held by his lamented predecessor , Bro . Colonel Clerke . He wished the VV . M . and the lodge a happy year

of ollice . . Bro . Dr . Sansom , P . P . G . W ., responded for "The Provincial Grand Ofiicers , " and expressed the great interest he ' 't in the welfare of that lodge , having been present at its consecration . He congratulated it on attaining a prominent position so speedily , and hoped that remarkable progress would continue in the future .

Uro . F . A . Philbrick , O . C , G . Reg ., proposed "The Wealth of the Worshipful Master" in a felicitous speech , and , referring to the installation of the VV . M . by his father 'hat evening , said that when they found a father initiating his sun into Freemasonry , and some years afterwards instal-!' , o him as Master of a lodge , it was a complete answer to tne charges frequently made against Freemasonry as a secret

society . the past year , rendered the ceremonies in a very impressive manner , and had initiated eight gentlemen into Freemasonry . These eight brethren had asked him ( the VV . M . ) to express to the I . P . M . their high appreciation of the manner in which the ceremonies had been rendered , and the geniality , kindness , and courtesy which had characterised his occupancy of the chair . They had further

desired to express those feelings in a more tangible form , and , therefore , asked Bro . Langley ' s acceptance of a handsome silver tea service . They hoped that when the I . P . M , used that service at home , and partook of tho " cup that cheers , but not inebriates , " he would be reminded of the eight brethren he had initiated into Masonry , and of their gratitude for the deep impressions made by his impressive

rendering of the ritual . Bro . George R . Langley , P . G . Stwd ., I . P . M ., said he could not possibly find words to express his thanks for the kindly spirit which had prompted the gift , but he thanked the brethren concerned from the bottom of his heart , and assured them that the tea s ; rvice would always be prized by him and his wife , than whom no woman could have a

better or more exalted idea of Freemasonry , looking as she did on the charitable side of the Order , and the assistance rendered to those in need of it . He thanked the ofiicers and brethren for the support given him duiing his term ol oflice , which had rendered his year a very successful one . Bro . VV . H . Lee , P . M ., P . P . G . invariably received . " The Masonic Charities " was given by Bro . Langley , I . P . M ., and acknowledged by Bro . James Terry , Secretary R . M . B . M ., returned thanks for "The Visitors , " and Bro . A . Blenkarn , S . VV ., acted in a similar capacity on

behalf of * ' The Ofiicers , " after which the Tyler ' s toast closed a most enjoyable evening . A choice selection of music , admirably performed by Bro . H . Schartau ' s part singers , added considerably to the enjoyment of the evening . The glees and part songs were rendered with a delicacy of expression which it would be difficult to hear surpassed , and were heartily enjoyed and keenly appreciated by all the brethren present .

PLUMSTEAD . Pattison Lodge ( No . 913 ) . —The installation meeting of the above powerful lodge—the premier lodge in the Province of Kent—took place on Thursday , the 7 th inst ., at the Freemasons' Hall , Mount Pleasant , upwards of 1 C 0 of the members and brethren of the neighbouring and provincial lodges attending to do honour to the occasion .

M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers ,

Present and Past , " desired to thank them for their hearty reception of the toast so genially put by their esteemed Bro . Col . Hughes . Some little timeago he ( Bro . Jamblin ) had the honour of being the Chaplain of their lodge , an honour he greatly prized , but quite believed it was for the good of the lodge that one of their resident clergy , Bro . llorsley , should hold that ollice . With regard to the Grand Officers , Present and Past , he confessed that when he came to that strong and nourishing lodge and saw so few

Provincial Meetings.

brethren wearing the purple it surprised him , for he knew of one lodge in the province with something like 15 members , most of them Past Masters , nearly all , if not all of whom were Present or Past Prov . Grand Officers . He could not help thinking that if more honours came that way , it would be not only fair , but beneficial to the province generally . He congratulated the VV . M . on having the honour of presiding over so large and influential a lodge , and concluded

by trusting some day to see the name of Col . Hughes on the roll of the Prov . Grand Oflicers of the Province of Kent . Bro . Busbridge , in proposing the toast of "The W . M ., " said no more important toast than the one he now had the honour to propose , had , or would be submitted to them . It was in fact the toast of the evening , lie was sorry it had not fallen into better hands than his own . They had already

shown their appreciation of their Worshipful Master by electing him as their head . From the first moment that Bro . Taylor had been in ollice up to the present he had been most indefatigable in the discharge of his duties , and no one could say otherwise , and now that he was their Worshipful Master , he felt sure they would all say that he was

well worthy of the position . He urged the officers to assist the W . M . in the best possible manner they could , as nothing gave so much encouragement to a W . M . as good ofiicers . He asked the brethren to attend , and show how unanimous they were in the cause of Masonry and brotherly love .

The VVorshipful Master , who was received with enthusiasm , said he could assure them that that was the proudest moment of his life . It was an occasion of which any Mason might well be proud . They had by a large and unanimous vote placed him in the chair of that lodge , in which he fully believed he had the hearty support and good wishes of every Past Master , officer , and brother , aid who were pledged to support him during his year of office . Nothing should be spared on his part to maintain the prestige ot that grand

old lodge , and he looked forward with confidence to a happy and prosperous year . Ihe other toasts were "The Installing Officer , " "The Past Masters of the Lodge , " "The Visitors , " "The Officers , " and the Tyler ' s toast . The Misses Amy Sargeant and Lucy Johnstone , and Bros . Clifton and Nell , and Messrs . G . Neville and L . Palmer sang selections splendidly j Bro . S . Horton played a solo on the violin , and Bro . Tyler presided at the piano .

SOUTHALL . Jersey Lodge ( No . 3163 ) . —This lodge met at the Railway Hotel on Monday , the 4 th inst ., Bro . Geo . Harper , VV . M ., presiding . The officers present were Bros . M ., of 3 S 2 ; and the attendance of members was unusually large . Letters were read from Bro . Howard H . Room , Prov . G . Sec , regretting inability to attend , and from Bros . Bishop and Harland , apologising for absence . Out of respect to the memory of the late Bro . Col . Sir Francis Burdett , Bart .,

P . G . M ., the lodge was in mourning , and during the evening it was unanimously resolved that a letter of condolence be sent to Lady Burdett . The work for the evening was heavy , there being two initiates , a passing , and a raising . The VV . M ., however , conducted the ceremonies with a promptitude and accuracy reilecting credit upon himself and the lodge . Bro . J . Tidmarsh ably assisted in his capacity as I . P . M ., and Bro . VV . Cocks , S . VV ., gave the traditional

history , and Bro . C Mead , J . W ., the working tools . A motion to increase the initiation and joining fees was carried unanimously , and a notice of motion was given that the sum of 10 guineas be voted to the purchase of a Past Master ' s jewel for the VV . M . on his retirement from his very successful year of office , An excellent repast was subsequently served to the brethren , some capital singing and recitations following thc

various toasts . In reply to the toast ol "The VV . M ., " ably proposed by Bro . John Tidmarsh , the VV . M . referred in grateful terms to the hearty reception and assistance he had met with at their meetings . He was proud of his position in the chair , and , as a founder , looked forward to the continued

prosperity of the lodge under the rule of succeeding ofiicers , who were so well qualifying themselves for that position . The VV . M . also remarked the pleasure it gave the brethren and himself to congratulate Bro . Tidmarsh , I . P . M ., on his recent promotion to Provincial honours , which compliment the brother acknowledged in a humorous speech .

lodge on the Provincial Charity Committee . Letters of regret for non-attendance were anounced from Bros . T . Fenn , President Board of General Purposes j Raymond Thrupp , D . P . G .

P . M . their high appreciation of the manner in which the ceremonies had been rendered , and the geniality , kindness , and courtesy which had characterised his occupancy of the chair . They had further

desired to express those feelings in a more tangible form , and , therefore , asked Bro . Langley ' s acceptance of a handsome silver tea service . They hoped that when the I . P . rendering of the ritual . Bro .
