Ezekiel Caters the builder . BRO . ALDERMAN AND SHERIFF-ELECT ALLISTON and Colonel and Sheriff-Elect Probyn , L . C . C ., attended at the bar of the Court of Alderman to give the usual bond which is required of every sheriff before taking office .
BRO . SAMUEL POPE , Q . C ., who is not only a leader of the Parliamentary Bar and Recorder of Bolton , but honorary Secretary of the United Kingdom Alliance as well , appeared recently as a witness before Viscount Peel ' s Commission on the Licensing Laws . Brassey , widow of the late Mr . Henry Brassey , brother of Bro . Lord Brassey .
THE MANY friends of General J . C . Smith , of Chicago , U . S . A ., will be glad to hejr that Bro . W . J . Hughan received a letter from him on the 21 st inst ., saying that he and his daughter arrived safely and well at New York on the loth inst . Miss Smith is all the better for her trip to England and Scotland , and it is hoped is now in a fair way of recovery .
THE DIRECTORS of Harrod's Stores have declared an interim dividend on the ordinary shares in respect of the half-year ending 30 th June last , at the rate of 10 per cent , per annum . FREEMASONS' PICNIC—On Wednesday , the 14 th inst ., the members of the St . John ' s Lodge of Freemasons , No . 191 , Bury , along with their friends , numbering in all about 40 , went for a picnic to Chester , Eaton Hall , and Hawarden . The party arrived in Chester about ro o'clock , and breakfasted at the Grosvenor Hotel . They sailed up the river to Eaton Hall , where they viewed the grounds , & c , and then drove to Hawarden , and subsequently left for Chester , dinner being served at the hotel . After dinner some time was spent in viewing the city and park , and the return journey was made shortly before nine o ' clock .
IN THE TRESENCE of a large number of London County Councillors and their friends , the annual inspection of the Feltham Industrial School took place on Saturday last . The institution accommodates some 570 boys who have got into some trouble , and being too young to expiate their offences in gaol have been consigned by the magistrates to the regular and systematic training of reformatory reeime , which ,
substituting discipline for punishment , teaches them the errors of their ways . The afternoon was occupied with various displays , and the steadiness with which the drills were performed reflected considerable credit on the instructors . For the benefit of those of a nautical turn of mind , and those who have chosen to follow a sailor's career , an excellent representation of a full-sized and fully-rigged frigate has been constructed in the grounds , and the ship ' s drill was one of the most interesting features in the programme . . .
MASONIC TRIP TO STRATFORD-ON-AVON FROM DERBY . —On the 14 th inst . an enjoyable trip took place to Stratford-on-A- ; on under the auspices of the Lodge of Repose , Derby . The party numbered 100 ladiesand gentlemen , and they left Derby by the London and North-Western special train , at S . 45 . On arriving at Milverton StaHon , Warwick , carriages were in waiting to convey them to Warwick Castle . The various places of interest were inspected , and from Cesar ' s Tower a fine view was obtained of the surrounding scenery . Afterwards some of the pirty visited St . Mary's Church ,
where the great Earl of Leicester is buried , and inspected its magnificent monuments , whilst others went to Leicester Hospital , which was founded by Lord Leicester in commemoration of Queen Elizabeth ' s historic visit to that portion of the country . Lunch was partaken of in the Woolpack Hotel , and the party then drove to Stratford-on-Avon through Charlecote Parke . The birthplace of Shakespeare , the museum of Shakesperean relics , the parish church which has just been opened after restoration , the Memorial Theatre , and other interesting sites were visited , and then the return journey was made to Warwick , the charming forest sceuery en route being much admired .
