Craft Masonry.

Loggia Italia , No . 2687 . The rapid growth in recent years of what are known as " class " lodges has produced no more interesting result than the formation of lodges by brethren hailing from foreign countries , where they can work the ritual of Freemasonry in their native language . Lodge La France was , and is , an unqualified success , and the same may now be said of the Loggia Italia , in connection with which an emergency meeting was held at the Cafe MonicoPiccadilly-circuson Wednesdaythe 20 th instant . There was ,

, , , however , a tinge of sadness in the proceedings owing to the absence , through illhealth " , of the real founder of the lodge , Bro . E . L . Valeriani , P . G . S . B . The lodge practically owes its existence to his efforts , and to his fostering care is attributable its present state of prosperity . It can , therefore , be readily understood by those acquainted with Bro . Valeriani ' s zeal and love for Masonry how keen his disappointment must have been , in being prevented from attending , and this feeling was shared by every brother presentand sincere hopes were ex pressed for his speedy restoration to good health . The

, heavy task of translating the ritual into the Italian language has been cheerfully and splendidly performed by Bro . Gallizia , I . P . M ., who at the meeting under notice gave an exhibition of the working byrehearsingtheceremony of raising , in the absence of the expected candidate . The officers present showed a remarkable degree of proficiency , which augurs well for the lodge and also for the Italia Lodge of Instruction , which meets on Monday evenings at Bro . Fumagalli ' s Restaurant , Wilton-road , Victoria , S . W . The W . M ., Bro . G . Mentasti , was supported by Bros . F . Gallizia , I . P . M . ; H . Foppoli ,

J . W . ; C . Fumagalli , S . D . ; C . Spanna , I . G . ; C . Corsi , V . Guidotti , A . Cogliati , P . M . ; Jas . Baghino , and H . Gros , P . M . Visitors : Bros . J . M . McLeod , P . G . S . B , Sec . R . M . I . B . ; and W . W . Lee , P . P . G . D . Middx . The lodge was opened , and the resolution confirming its removal from the Hotel Cecil was unanimously confirmed . A telegram was received from Bro . Malpaga regretting his inability to attend , and the ceremony of raising was therefore rehearsed , and the lodge closed . An excellent dinner followed , and a very enjoyable evening was spent .

A few toasts were subsequently given , the majority of Jthe speeches being in Italian . Bro . J . M . McLeod , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . LB ., in replying for "The Grand Officers , " expressed his deep sense of the privilege of being allowed to respond for that toast , especially in a lodge such as theirs , where the members were so thoroughly imbued with the true fraternal spirit . Having been present at the consecration , he was proud to hear they were flourishing and that harmony still prevailed . That was the wish

of the Grand Secretary and the other Consecrating Officers , and they would be sorry to hear of the death of one of the latter—Bro . Gordon Robbins—who made such a splendid speech in Italian at the inaugural meeting . He congratulated them on having such a Past Master as Bro . Gallizia , who had the ritual at his fingers' ends . So many of the words were so akin to the English language in pronunciation and construction , that it was easy for a brother with a knowledge of the ceremony , but unacquainted with the language to follow it . The excellence of Bro . Gallizia ' s work was well backed up by the

officers , and if that was an index of what they could do , there was no doubt as to the future prosperity of the lodge . Although enjoying their work and hospitality , there was a tinge of sadness , for he missed the face of a brother Grand Officer—Bro . Valeriani , P . G . S . B . He had always held that brother up as a thorough good sort , and a shining light in Freemasonry . He hoped Bro . Valeriani would bi with them for many years to come to renew the great good he had already done , for they knew how disappointed he must feel , as he never neglected a meeting if he could possibly avoid doing so .

"The Health of the W . M . 'Vwas given in genial terms , and suitably responded to by Bro . G . Mentasti , W . M ., after which Bro . W . W . Lee , P . M ., replied for " The Visitors . " Bro . F . Gallizia , I . P . M ., acknowledged the toast of his health , and said he was pleased to hear his work had given satisfaction . It had been very difficult , for he had had to practically try and forget the English rendering , and" begin again in Italian . He was very proud of the lodge , and as long as he lived he would do his best for its prosperity . _ * "The Officers" was given , and the Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings .

Jubilee Masters' Lodge , No- 2712 . The above lodge held its regular meeting at the Hotel Cecil on the 15 th inst ., Bro . j J . D . Langton , P . Dep . G . D . C , Under Sheriff designate , presiding . The Sheriffs of London , Bros . Alderman Alliston and Col . Clifford Probyn , Past G . Treas ., attended in State , and amongst other distinguished brethren were Bros . Dr . Henry Sutherland , P . G . D . ; Dr . F . Lawrance , P . A . G . D . C ; Imre Kiralfy , P . A . G . D . C ; and R . Uay Sudlow , P . G . Std . Br .

The lodge having been opened , Bro . J . A . Dugdale , 165 , was raised to the sublime Degree of Master Mason , and Bro . W . R . Maxwell , 15 S 4 , was passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft . After the banquet which followed Bro . Chas . Bertram gave some very marvellous examples in card tricks , and Bros . Kift , Maxwell , and Strugnell sang in their best style .

The Grand Master Of California.

THE GRAND MASTER OF CALIFORNIA .

The month has been a notable one for Los Angeles in the fact that our Grand Master lias done us the honour tojpay us quite a prolonged visit , and during his stay he has won golden opinions from every one with whom he has come in contact . The Honourable Frank Marion Angelotti , Judge of the Superior Court of Marin County , and Grand Master of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of California .

Of urbane and pleasing manners and address , and a thorough knowledge of men and their idiosyncrasies , he knows how to treat each person to whom he is introduced , so as to leave the most favourable impression behind him . He would take an old gentleman by the hand and give him enough pleasure in a twj minutes' chat to last the old boy a life time ; and the same with a young man . We have had proof of this from many

persons with whom we have conversed on the subject of the Grand Master ' s visit , and occular demonstration in our own person , and we sincerely hope Bro . Angelotti is able to look back on his visit among us with as much plea-ure as we all do , and , indeed , one and all vied with each other to make him feel welcome and enjoy his visit . The only

thing that we know of that would mar it , was the immense amount of personal exertion it took to cover all the ground he did while among us , for he visited San Diego and several of the surrounding towns ( Pomona especially , he had a great time at ) as well as visiting the lodges in Los Angeles .

Besides the pleasures of his visit , the Grand Master , in the course of his speeches , touched on one or two subjects of great importance to the Cralt , one of which was the great necessity , in these days of big additions to our Order , of careful selection of those persons who wish to join , that they may be of good repute , honest and respectable , able to pay the fees and dues , and not necessarily to become burdens on the bod v . His remarks

were not specially pointed to us in this matter ; onl y that as nothing succeeds like success , and as we were having such a boom in Masonry in this section , he cautioned us for that reason to be the more careful , because when the profane heard how many were joining , it was apt to induce many to think there must be something of a profitable nature in Freemasonry when so many of the better class were seeking admission , and the result

His remarks

were not specially pointed to us in this matter ; onl y that as nothing succeeds like success , and as we were having such a boom in Masonry in this section , he cautioned us for that reason to be the more careful , because when the profane heard how many were joining , it was apt to induce many to think there must be something of a profitable nature in Freemasonry when so many of the better class were seeking admission , and the result
