SOUTHAMPTON . —Albert Edward Lodge ( No . 1780 ) . —On Tuesday , the 6 th inst ., the first regular lodge meeting of Freemasons in Southampton was held in the new Masonic Hall , \ . __ t . the brethren of the above lodge , the youngest in the town , assembled for the purpose of installing Bro . I . Haile , the Master elect , on which occasion the opportunity was embraced of presenting to Bro .

W . Hickman , D . P . G . M ., and whoUor thc past twelve months has becn the Worshipful Master of thc lodge , his portrait in oil , in recognition of the valuable service he has rendered as Deputy Provincial Grand Master of the province , in promoting the establishment of the Piincc Edward Lodge , and presiding over it during the first year of its existence . The portrait has been hung on

the walls of thc lodge , and forms a most suitable addition to a number of other portraits similar in form and style , some of which have now become Masonically historical . The first to be mentioned in point of age is the portrait of Lord Montague , the W . M . ofthe Lodge of Concord , which became d-tunct about half a century since , but whose name is locally perpetuated by the Chapter of Concord , a

comparatively moderp offshoot from the Royal Gloucester Chapter . Some other prominent portraits are those of three Provincial Grand Masters of Hampshire—that of Sir William de Crespigny , P . G . M ., 1819 ; Mr . lVnk-aze , a member for thc bnrough of Southampton , P . G . M ., 1832 ; and Admiral Sir Lucius Curtis , D . P . G . M . 1832 , P . G . M . 1840 , whom many living Masons well remember . Hung

opposite to these three last named portraits , which are oh the cast wall , and therefore behind and on each side the masters' chairs , are portraits also in oil , of the late Bros . C . E . Deacon , D . P . G . M . 1843 , and of J . R . Stebbing , D . P . G . M . 1859 . It is au excellent likeness of the D . P . G . M ., Bro . Hickman , tbree-quaiter length , wearing the collar of a P . G . Officer of England , with a jewel of D . P .

G . M . ' s pendant—his D . P . G . M ' s apron and badge and other Masonic clothing appropriately making it a companion to the other oil portraits in the hall . The artist is Bro . W . Biddlecombe , of Blechynden-terrace . The presentation was made by tbe Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., in the presence of a large number of members of the lodge and visiting brethren .

HAMMERSMITH . —Andrew Chapter ( No . 834 ) . —On Thursday , thc 15 th inst ., a convocation of this chapter was held at the Bell and Anchor Hotel , West Kensington Gardens , and was unanimously attended , notwithstanding the miserable state of the weather . was speedily disposed of . The chapter was then closed , and the companions adjourned to a first-class banquet , supplied by Comp . Millis , which gave great satisfaction to all present . the many excellences and virtues of Bro . Valentine were so well known to them that for him to descant upon them would be idle . They all knew how , in spite of unavoidable drawbacks , Bro . Valentine had mojt conscientiously served high office in various Degrees in Masonry , and he was sure that they would all unite in striving to render his year of office one of enjoyment to the W . M . as

well as to themselves . As regarded the lodge , it was now established on a thoroughly firm basis . The roll of members was a sufficient guarantee of its popularity , numbering , as it did , nearly a hundred , and amongst them some of the best and brightest Masons of Yorkshire . The tcast was heartily received , and feelingly responded to by thc W . M ., who thanked the brethren for their uniform

kindness , and concluded by proposing "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . W . T . Orde-Powlett , " than whom a more energetic and exemplary Mason was not to be found in the province .
