He was always ready when wanted , and , in fact , was a perfect Proteus in his Masonic gifts and qualities . The toast was received with enthusiasm , and Bro . Hughan had already amassed considerable information with a

He thanked the brethren for their kindness , assuring them that as in the past , so in the future , the welfare of Mark Masonry , and especially the York Mark Lodge ( time immemorial ) , would be very dear to him . The S . W . proposed the Past Masters of the lodge , and called upon Bro . f . Todd , P . M ., to respond . Bro . Todd said that , though in one sense the oldest P . M .

However , he was glad to find the lodge so prosperous when he re-joined it , and should always be glad to place himself at its service . The S . W . responded to the toast of " The

Grand Lodge was opened in form by the Royal Grand Master , who then addressed thc assemblage . He said : Brethren , —This special meeting of Grand Lodge has been called for the purpose of investing our Brother Shadwell Clerke with the office and insignia of Grand Secretary . You will , brethren , I ftel sure , concur with me when I say that we have every reason to deplore and lament

the serious illness of our late Grand Secretary , Brother Hervey , who so ably and so well filled the post of Grand Secretary for many years . You , I am sure , most unfcignedly regret that our Brother Hervey bas , for the sake of his health , been obliged to resign his office as Grand Secretary , and he carries into his retirement our sincere wishes that his health may improve in his freedom from

the important and very arduous duties . Brother Hervey ' s retirement has thrown upon me the duly ot choosing a successor to him , and as 1 have felt that , as your Grand Master , I should select one who would be net only capable of holding this important post , but also would be acceptable to the brethren , 1 trust the choice I have made will

meet with your approbation . ( Cheers . ) I am sure that our Brother Shadwell Gierke will discharge in a fitting manner his duties in this important station to which I have called him , for , as most present doubtless are aware , Brother Shadwell Gierke has discharged many impoitant duties in Freemasonry ; and his other duties , 1 know from _________________________________________________

he important office which I am about to invest him . Cheers . ) Bro Col . Shadwell Clerke was then conducted by Bros . Sir Albert WooJs and Thomas Fenn to the right of His Royal Highness , when the Grand Tyler ( Bro . Henry Sadler ) attended with the Grand Secretary ' s apron , collar , and jewel and gauntlets on a blue velvet cushion . The Prince of Wales thereupon took these regalia , invested Colonel

Shadwell Clerke with tnem , and afterwards cordially shook him by the hand . The new Grand Secretary proceeded to his table , under the conduct of Bros . Sir Albert Woods and Fenn , amidst universal cheering . Sir Albert Woods then called the brethren to salute Colonel Clerke with the salutes appertaining to his rank . The Prince of Wales then announced that there was no more business before the Grand Lodge , which was therefore closed in due form .

On leaving the lodge , as on entering , His Royal Highness was greeted with loud and continued applause . - Colonel Shadwell Clerke was afterwards presented with an address of congratulation from the Masonic Province of Monmouth by the hands of Bro . William Watkins , of Newport , Monmouthshire , who was deputed by thc brethren of that province to perform the duty .

Hubbard , Collins , and F . Cozens , and the whole of the work , both consecration ceremony and music , was most perfectly performed . At the conclusion of the ceremony ,

Bro . Terry installed Bro . Thomas Harper Meredith , P . M . 87 and 1257 , Treas . 1604 , P . Z . 1604 , tic , as W . M . The following brethren were then appointed to office : — Brcs . G . J . G . ; and Gilbeit , 1257 , Stewd . A most unique

circumstance in Freemasonry then occurred . The especial Grand Lodge for the appointment and investiture of Col . Shadwell li . Clerke as Grand Secretary was called for six o ' clock , and the Wardens , who had never been Wardens be fore , were able to attend with thc W . M . at the ceremony . After having attended the Grand Lodge and joined tl c brethren there in giving the Most Worshipful Grand

Master hearty cheers , they returned to the Caxton Lodge , where the remainder of the work was ' completed . Propositions for initiation and joining were given in , and thc Consecrating Officers were elected honorary members , and votes of thanks were passed to them for performing the ceremony . Thc lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to Freemasons' Tavern to banquet .

After banquet the usual toasts were proposed . In proposing " The Health of the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " the W . M . said it had been a very pleasurable duty to thebr . thren that evening to attend Grand Lodge , although he himself had been there on many occasions previuusly . On the present evening it had been more especially pleasurable because he had been able to

introduce there by Bro . lerry , the Consecrating Officer , the Wardens who had not had an opportunity of attending Grand Lodge before . He had heard that this was an unprecedented circumstance for Wardens to be invested with their collars , and within half-an-hour afterwards they were welcoming their Grand Master in Grand Lodge as members of Grand Lodge . Many of the brethren who

were in Grand Lodge knew how well the Prince of Wales discharged his duties there , although there was not much for him to do . But whether there was much or little , the M . W . G . M . discharged his duty with the same feelings of interest for the Cralt . He had invested the new Grand Secretary that evening . Every one who knew the late Grand Secretary , Bro . John Hervey , regretted exceedingly

that he was obliged to retire from the office . Bro . Shadwell Clerke was a new man to them with regard to the office of Grand Secretary , having been appointed only two hours ago , but from what the brethren knew of him in the higher Degrees of Masonry , and his anxiety for Masonry throughout the world , they might be assured he would discharge his duties with all the fidelity which had becn described to them by thc Grand Master that evening .

Belgrave Lodge ; Davage , Pcllett , and H . Massey ( Freemason ) . Bro . H . G . Buss , Assistant Grand Secretary , after the formal opening of Grand Lodge , by the direction of the Prince of Wales , read the summons assembling the brethren .

The Investiture Of The Grand Secretary By The Prin Ce Of Wales.

he important office which I am about to invest him . Cheers .

G . P ., 1791 ; W . H . Hayward , W . M . 1306 ; Louis Beck , W . M . 1559 ; and H . Massey ( Freemason ) , 619 . The musical airangements were conducted by Bro . Henri de Solla , assisted by Bros .

G . J . Dawson , 749 , S . W . ; A . Wood-, 1158 , J . W . ; E . Ccle , 1257 , Treas . ; W . Richards , 1257 , Sec ; Butterworth , 1604 , S . D . ; Oakman , 1420 , J . D . ; Beck , 1196 , I . G . ; and Gilbeit , 1257 , Stewd .
