Williamson , Tyler ( unanimously re-elected ) . The brethren afterwards dined together in the banqueting room , where Bro . Casey catered in his usual satisfactory style , and a very pleasant evening was passed , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts receiving that hearty rendering always given in the Craft .

NEWPORT PAGNELL . —SS . Peter and Paul's Lodge ( No . 1410 ) . —On Tuesday , the 13 th inst ., the members of this lodge held their usual meeting at the Swan Hotel . After the business had been transacted they adjourned to an adjoining room , where , thanks to the improved catering of Host Cannon , an excellent spread was prepared and well served up , giving great satisfaction

to all present . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts had been given and duly honoured , the W . M . proposed " The Health of the Rev . J . Studholme Brownrigg , " and in eulogistic terms alluded to the important services he had rendered in respect to Freemasonry , and particularly to the Lodge of SS . Peter and Paul , where , through his instrumentality , such excellent harmony always prevailed .

He then presented him with thc Past Master's jewel , and hoped he would be spared long to wear it . The jewel bore the following insciiption : — " Presented by the Brethren of SS . Peter and Paul's Lodge , No . 14 . 0 , to V . W . Bro . the Rev . J . Studholme Brownrigg , P . G . C , First W . M ., in token of

their appreciation of his invaluable services . " The V . W . Bro . the Rev , J . Studholme Brownrigg , in acknowledging the present , said : —W . M ., Bro . Wardens , and Brethren , it is most difficult for me to acknowledge as I would wish the very beautiful jewel you have given me . 1 have the privilege to wear a large number of Masonic jewels , but it has always been my habit to wear few , because I believe

that jewels unless fairly earned are not worth much . It is a very common thing to see a brother covered with decorations which mean nothing . Some jewels I- do value . I have one that reminds me of the days when as an undergraduate at Cambridge I was the first Principal Sojourner of the Euclid , the new University Chapter . By another jewel I call to mind my dear old

Province of Cambridge which , at the close of my university career , gave me the highest honour of the year , the Provincial Senior Grand Wardenship . Here is a jewel which I never deserved , that of the Past Grand Officer of England , and this one I deserved still less , the garter of the English Freemasonry , the jewel of the Royal Alpha Lodge . You , brethren , have added to-night one that I

shall value second to none . I value it because it is a testimony both of your good feeling to me , and also of the efficient state of the lodge . It would be affectation for me to say I have not worked at this lodge . For the seven years of its existence I have never missed a lodge . I have installed every Master . I have often occupied the chair . Most of you are my Masonic children . You will

understand that as Secretary I might have had many tioubles . The W . M . and Wardens change every year . The Secretary is a matter of fact handed on from Master to Master , though , of course , he receives his appointment annually afresh . This is , I believe , a necessary state of things for the well-being of a lodge , but it may have disadvantages both for the Master and for the Secretary . It is most

disagreeable to a new W . M . to find himself obliged to take on a crusty old Secretary , who never consults him about anything , and who resents any proposal which he does not himself originate . I hope my dear friends , Bros . West , Childe , Fitch , Donald Frazer , Heigham , Wilmer , and you , W . M ., have not found me such . And , on the other hand , it is equal ) ) ' disagreeable to a Secretary to find

that every new W . M . wishes to change every detail of lodge management simply for the sake of change . I certainly , | Worshipful Master , from yourself and your predecessors , have had nothing but the utmost consideration in all matters . I conceive it is the duty of a Secretary ever to remember that he is subordinate to the W . M . AU that he docs is by

command of the W . M . He must manage details without interfering with the Master ' s prerogative . A Secretary who manages everything without consulting the Worshipful Master is unfit for his office . The Secretary who worries his chief about every comma in thc circular is equally unfit . No one but those who have tried it know how hard it is to steer between these two extremes . 1 am

conscious ot many failures , to which you arc most kindly bl-n * J . to-night , but 1 have tiled to preserve a due medium between a too great independence and a shirking of the proper responsibiliry of my office . So far as 1 have succeeded it has been through the good tone which has ever existed in this lodge , not by my own merit . We have had a few

difficulties to meet . We have had animated discussions . We have all had and held our opinions , but we have never for one moment lost sight of this truth , that the liberty of opinion which we claim for ourselves we must ourselves allow to others . It is this fact which has made my work , whether as Secretary or Master of this lodge , not a labour but a pleasure . I shall wear this

jewel , I hope , for many years as Secretary of this lodge , in commemoration of the brotherly feeling of the past , as an assurance that we pledged , one and all , to preserve Ior the future those principles by which you have enabled me , I will not say to deserve , but to receive it as no empty compliment . The toast of "The W . M . " was given and heartily received , and a very pleasant and convivial evening was enjoyed .

HAMPTON . —Hemming Lodge ( No . 1512 ) . — This lodge , one of the most prosperous in the province , held a meeting at the Lion Hotel on the 15 th inst ., which was fairly attended . Among those present were Bros . Jessett , W . M . ; T . VV . Ockenden , S . W . ; T . C . Walls , J . W ., P . G . S . B . Middlesex ; E . Hopwood , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B . Middlesex , Treasurer ; W . Hammond , P . M ., P . P . G . D .

Middlesex , Secretary ; Moody , I . G . ; Day , W . S . ; f > Hurst , P . M ., P . G . A . P . Middlesex ; Francis , P . P . G . D . C . Surrey ( hon . member ); Gilbert , P . G . T . Middlesex , Tyler . The visitors were Bros . Masters , 144 ; Tanner , Brixton ; Smith , 16 5 6 . The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed , the W . M ., at the desire of Bro . Francis , allowed him to raise Bro . Tanner to the degree of

M . M . The ceremony was performed by Bro . Francis in a manner that befitted so old and distinguished an exponent of Craft Masonry as that well-known Preceptor is acknowledged to be . Upon the motion of Bros . Walls and Hammond , the sum of £ 5 5 s . was unanimously voted to Bro . Hopwood _ list , he being a Steward for the Lodge of Faith at the next festival of the R . M . B . I . Bro . John

Hurst , P . M ., having been appointed a Steward to represent the Hemming Ledge at the Boys' Festival in the ensuing summer , thc lodge was duly closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent repast well served by Mr . Ballard , the caterer . The customary routine of toasts were duly proposed and heartily received . Bro . Walls replied upon behalf of "The P . G . Officers of Middlesex ;"

Bros . Tanner , Masters , and Smith for " The Visitors , " Bro . W . Hammond for " The Past Masters , " and Bros . Hopwood and Ockenden for "The Officers . " The remainder of the evening was agreeably devoted to harmony , and the Tyler ' s toast at an early hour terminated the proceedings .

EAST GRINSTEAD . —Sackville Lodge ( No . 1619 ) . —An emergency meeting of this lodge was held at the Crown Hotel on Tuesday , the 13 th inst . Present : Bros . John G . Horsey , W . M . ; S . Davison , S . W . ; E . A , Head , J . W . ; Chas . Sawyer , I . P . M . and Sec ; W . Rudge . S . D . ; J . G . Calway , J . D . ; J . Woodbridge , Jas . Cooper , E . Dickman , C . Firbank , G * W . F . Sargeant , Tyler . Visitors : Bros . A . Thompson , 1601 , and A . Overton , 452 . The lodge having been opened in due form , the ballot was taken for Mr . Thos . Carder and Mr . Henry Horsey , as candidates for initiation , which proving unanimous , these gentlemen were duly initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry by the W . M ., who performed the ceremony in his usual able manner . A

communication was then read from Bro . Hook , P . M ., resigning his office as Charity Steward . The W . M . stated that he should like some brother resident in East Grinstead to take the position , and Bro . E . A . Head , J . W ., agreed to do so , and was duly elected by the brethren . The W . M . urged upon them the necessity for giving him all possible support . The I . G . having tendered his resignation of that

office , the W . M . appointed and invested Bro . E . Dickman in his stead . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren afterwards sat down to a substantial repast . In proposing " The Initiates , " the W . M . alluded to . the pleasure he felt at having initiated his brother that evening . The Tyler ' s toast was given at about ten o ' clock , and the btethren then dispersed .

YORK . —Eboracum Lodge ( No . i _ i /) . —The regular meeting of this lodge was held on Monday , the 12 th inst ., the chair being occupied by the I . P . M ., Bro . J . S . Cumberland , in the unavoidable absence of the W . M ., Bro . C . G . Padel . The whole of the officers were in their places , and on the dais were Bros . T . B . Whytehead , P . M ., G . Balmford , P . M ., and others ; and many visitors and

brethren were also present . 1 he business consisted of the raising of Bro . Brown to the Third Degree , which was well worked by the I . P . M . Bro . Whytehead announced that the books in thc lodge library were now available for the members . A liberal response was made to the appeal for the Benevolent festival , and several brethren expressed their intention of attending the festival . A successful

ballot was taken for a joining member . A number of minor matters were disposed of , and thc lodge was closed . At refreshment thc usual toasts were duly proposed from thc chair . In replying to that of " The Provincial Grand Master aud the Provincial Grand Officers , " Bro . T . B . Whytehead said that Lord Zetland had shown himself the right man in the right place , and the circular before them

announcing that the consecration of the Farrum Lodge , No . 1848 , at Middlcsborough , would be performed by his lordship , showed the living interest hc was taking in the Craft in not leaving these matters entirely in the hands of his Deputy . Hc ( the speaker ) had lately been turning over some old volumes of the ' Freemasons' Quarterly , " and had come upon the announcement of the appointment of

the late earl as Grand Master of England . The comments made by the editor were not very complimentary to his lordship , who was said to have been pushed into the office without any special qualification . Most of them remembered how the late carl had falsified such an assertion by thc manner in which he had endeared himself to the Masons of England , and he thought thc case of the

present earl was curiously analogous . When Lord Zetland was installed at York a few years ago as head of this important province he had heard it said that his lordship had merely been appointed because he was his uncle ' s nephew . Well ! how had thc event proved ? Plainly that the appointment was the very best that could have been made . He believed every Mason in the province honoured

and loved his lordship as one who conscientiously did his duty to the Craft , and did it well . It was a pleasant thing * too to see him coming prominently forward in the Masonic Charities , and he was glad to know that York would support him well on the 9 th prox ., when his lordship would preside at the Benevolent festival . The list of the York

Lodge , 23 G , was already a very substantial one , and he hoped the junior lodge would still sustain its already wellearned reputation for charity . " The Health of the W . M ., the I . P . M ., Sec , " were then drunk , and a very pleasant evening was passed , enlivened by the singing of Bros . Wilkinson , Marshall , and otiiers .

LIVERPOOL . —Marlborough Lodge ( No . 1620 ) . —The annual installation meeting of this thriving lodge was held on Wednesday afternoon , the 7 th inst ., at Derby Hall , Tuebrook , one of the many pleasant suburbs of Liverpool .

M . M . B . I . Bro . John

Hurst , P .
