Were it not that actors are notoriously very earnest Freemasons , there might be a suspicion of levity in the circumstance of a pronounced low comedian discharging the functions of a Worshipful Master . "Society ' s Clowns" can , however , on occasions assume an unexpected gravity ; and no Freemason certainly couid cavil at the manner in which Mr . Harry Nicholls ,

forgetting his "alter ego " of the boards , has acquitted himself during the past year as the august president of the Urury Lane Lodge . The Masonic ritual is specially adapted to the trained elocution and histrionic gifts of actors ; and it might be said that it is never so impressively delivered as at lodges of which actors are officers . —Newcastle Chronicle .

Pessimists are always telling us that every year the world is growing wickeder and more corrupt . This , however , we note , is in no sense the opinion of Mr . George Williams , whose right to pronounce a dictum on the subject no one is likely to have the presumption to call in question . Asked by a pressman how the young men of to-day compare with the young men ot previous generations , he has declared

that those to be found in the great houses in the City are of an altogether better type than those employed when he commenced business life 53 years ago . " There is a much higher tone about them ; there is not so much intemperance or immorality as there was ; and as regards industry , honesty , punctuality , and trustworthiness , an all-round improvement is apparent . "—City Press .

to the next half year . As compared with the" corresponding half year of 1 S 92 , there has been a decrease of 2 'f / i per cent , on the quantity of gas sold , but an increase in the sale of coke , tar , & c . In announcing the retirement , in consequence of failing health , of their late Secretary , Iiro . Magnus Ohren , after 3 S years' faithful service , the Directors state that in consideration of his valuable services they have awarded him a retiring pension of £ 5 °°

Mr . Passmore Edwards on Thursday laid the foundationstone of a new wing of West 1 lam Hospital . The present hospital , of 32 beds , built only six years ago , has been found altogether inadequate for the necessities of the West Ham district , which increases in population at the rate uf 11 , 000 or 12 , 001 ) every year . Accidents , largely on ace iunt of the increasing use of machinery in large factories , have correspondingly increased in number .

Asked by a pressman how the young men of to-day compare with the young men ot previous generations , he has declared

that those to be found in the great houses in the City are of an altogether better type than those employed when he commenced business life 53 years ago . "—City Press .
