Masonry he had never come across a harder working Mason than Comp . Cleave , who thoroughly understood the ritual , and was an honour to the province and to their chapter . Comp . Cleave had splendidly performed the duties of M . E . Z ., and that work was characteristic of every office he undertook . He wished to present the I . P . Z . with a jewel in recognition of his excellent services , and all would agree he had thoroughly deserved it . Comp . J . R . Cleave . Prov . G . J ., I . P . Z ., said he regarded it as a great privilege to respond for the P . G . Officers of Surrey , more especially when he saw many older and

more experienced G . Officers around the table . As the M . E . Z . had set an example of short speeches , and as they had heard his voice at considerable length in the chapter , they would excuse him trom any lengthy reply . He must thank the M . E . Z . for the very flattering and kind observations made with regard to his work . On the principle that the M . E . Z . could do no wrone , he i resumed thai ; he must respond also for the toast of the I . P . Z ., otherwise he should have been inclined to find fault , and propose the toast of the M . E . Z . first . The King was dead : long live the King ; and it should have been his privilege to have moposed "The M . E . Z . " first . As , however , it was

the M . E . Z . ' s anxiety to curtail speeches , he would simply thank the companions for the jewel presented to him . He took a very great interest in the chapter , and should endeavour to the best of bis ability to continue to support it . He hoped to see it a very flourishing chapter , and he was glad to find that evening that they had turned the corner from a financial point of view . The latest acquisitions to the chapter weretho ^ e who would do credit to it , and if the members stuck to it they would make it one of the most flourishing in the province . He thanked them most sincerely for the kind manner in which they had treated him whilst occupying the chair . He would next propose *• Th e

M . E . Z , " who was a modest man , and had been known to them and esteemed for manyyears . Comp . Hayward would do far better as M . E . Z . than he anticipated . They might not all have good memories , or have plenty of time to spare to study the ritual , but there were many ways in which an M . E . Z . might make himself pleasant and useful to the members . He was certain that Comp . Hayward would leave the chair with quite as much esteem and affection from the members as any of his predecessors . Without being egotistical , he could say the M . E . Z . had had illustrious predecessors , as witness the distinctions conferred in the province and in the G . Chapter .

Comp . W . Dunning Hayward , M . E . Z ., thanked the l . P . Z . for his kindly remarks , and expressed his unworthiness of them . He certainly did take up the work of Craft Masonry , and there were many present that evening who would do him justice by saying he worked hard and performed all the Degrees . In Royal Arch Masonry he had got into the chairs at most unfortunate times , when very busy and suffering from serious indisposition . He would do the best he could in the position in which he had been placed and thanked them for the honour conferred upon him .

"The Exaltee and Joining Members" was given by tbe M . E . Z ., who welcomed Comp . Fielder , the W . M .-of the George Price Lodge , as a member , and also Comp , Parsons , and was certain they would both prove good members . Comps . Fielder and Parsons responded , and for "The Visitors" Comps . Spencer , Hawkins , and Howe replied . Comp . J . D . Langton , P . G . S . B ., on behalf of "The Officers , " returned thanks . As the oldest P . Z . present he was pleased to see the George Price Lodge was taking an active interest in the chapter . He was sure the chapter would prove one of the best in

the province . He was sorry Comp . Hart , P . Z ., was not present , but they would be pleased to hear he was recovering . Speaking personally , he looked upon Croydon as one of the stepping-stones that gave him higher honours . He should always look upon that ledge and chapter as having given Wm a " send-off" in Masonry , lie wished to endorse what had been said of Comp . Cleave , who , by his energetic hard work and great experience , had done a great deal for that chapter . Comps . Gordon Smith and Dennis also responded . The proceedings then terminated .
