Ladies' Banquet Of The Burgoyne Lodge, No. 902.

vears ago . It was then held upon a lodge night , but they resolved that upon the present occasion they would have no Masonic business , so that they could all meet at the same time . He hoped he might venture to say this had been a success , and that the evening would be carried through in its entirety in an enjoyable manner . He was grateful to them all for their presence , especially the ladies . He trusted that when they adjourned to the ball room they would all be - \ ble to enjoy the company of the visitors as one hippy family , and as they always did in the Burgoyne Lodge .

Bro . J . J- FIFIELD , W . M ., then gave The Ladies . The Masonic ritual forbade the ladies to be " in the know , " but if they were enabled to do so they would certainly take a keener interest in supporting the Charities . Masonry was an Order second to none in the world , and the good emanating from it was known to all the brethren present . He represented this lodge at the recent Festival of

the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , when £ 20 , 000 was collected for the Old Peop le . That would appeal to the hearts of the ladies , and show them that there was some good in Freemasonry . He would couple the name of Bro . Gibb , who was presented some time ago with a silver tea and coffee service as a token of their esteem .

Bro . GABB , P . M ., Treas ., in response , said it was through his wife he joined Freemasonry . He was sure that the single ladies present who were engaged to Freemasons would only be too delighted to be the wives of Freemasons . If the brethren only did what was right in Freemasonry they would make good husbands . All the wives wished to see their husbands in the position of W . M ., but to do this it was necessary that the brethren should be allowed one night a week off in order to attend a lodge of instruction . On behalf of the ladies he thanked the

Iod"e for the hospitality shown them . An adjournment was then made to the ball room where a programme of dances and songs was enjoyed . Bros . Fifield and Cowland officiated as M . Cs ., and Miss Gabb , Miss Rashleigh , and Bro . R . H . Marchbanks rendered several songs in excellent style . There was also a sleight of hand an 3 shadowgraphy performance by Regollo . The company dispersed about midnight well satisfied with the excellent entertainment provided by the members of the Burgoyne Lodge . "

After the ceremony of dedication , the acting PROV . G . MASTER delivered an oration . He said it was with the greatest pleasure that he had come there to dedicate this new lodge , for , having the interest of the province at heart , it would naturally be a source of satisfaction to him to see that Lodge Victoria so early in tts career should be able to provide itself with its own premises . Such premises were necessarily costly and involved financial liability , and it spoke well for the future of that lodge that its members had

felt able to take this responsibility upon themselves . He heartily congratulated them , because , speaking from a considerable experience of Freemasonry , he could say that nothing tended morer-to the comfort of the brethren and the stability of the lodge than the fact that a lodge possessed its own premises . Other and greater advantages also flowed from a lodge possessing a horns of its own , for such a room became a true centre of Masonic life , and served perpetually to remind them of the duties they as Freemasons owed to each other and to the Craft in general .

At the luncheon which followed at the Trelawny Hotel , Bro . WESTLAKE responded for " The Grand Lodge of Fngland . " Bio . Col . EDYVEAN , W . M ., gave " The Provincial Grand Lodge of Devon and the Acting Prov . Grand Master . " Bro . DAVIE responded , and afterwards proposed " The Health of the W . M . of Lodge Victoria . " He was sure from what he had seen that day that that lodge must owe a great deal to Colonel Edyvean .

The W . M . suitably replied , and the acting Prov . Grand Master and many of the brethren then left to attend a Masonic concert held in the evening at Plymouth Guildhall . T &

CONSECRATION OF THE ORIENT ( MARK ) LODGE No . 531 { E . C ) .

Freemasonry has been makirg steady progress in Howrah during the last few years , and a very gratifying evidence of its present flourishing condition in the Trans-Hooghly town was furnished on the 13 th ult ., by the foundation of a new Mark lodge there , an institution which had become somewhat of a necessity . It is now more than 15 years since a Craft lodge was opened in Howrah and consecrated bv Bro . Sir H . T . Prinsep , Dist . G .

Master of Bengal , and now the Howrah brethren are indebted to Bros . H . M . Rustomjee , W . M . ; T . Maxwell , S . W . ; K . J . Guzdar , J . W . ; R . H . M . Rustomjee , J . Tinson , G . At the close of the beautiful and highly edifying ceremony , Bro . H . M . Rustomjee was installed in due form by Bro . J . C . Bannerjee as the first Master of Lodge Orient . The brethren are to be congratulated on their selection , as Bro . H . M . Rustomjee has already filled the chair in three Mark lodges , and was a founder and first W . M . of one of them—Lodge

Keystone , No . 495 ( E . C ) , which was established in Barrackpore in March , 1896 . He is a P . G . S . Overseer of the Grand Lodge of England , Past Dep . Dist . G . Mark Master , and the present Dist . G . Mark Secretary of B engal . The success of the lodge may therefore be regarded as assured , tiro . The election of Treasurer and Tyler and the appointment of the remaining officers was adjourned till the next meeting . Bro . H . M . Sinclair , J . C . Banerjee , C M . Rustomjee , C T . M . Anderson , and W . H . Sweet were unanimously elected honorary members of the lodge in recognition of the useful services rendered by them .

The W . M . submitted draft by-laws for the approval of the members . They were approved and passed , subject to confirmation at the next meeting of the lodge . Several candidates for advancement and as joining members were proposed , after which the lodge was closed and the brethren adjourned to the banquet , which was in every respect worthy of the occasion .

After the usual loyal , patriotic and Masonic toasts , Bro . SINCLAIR , in a very happy speech , proposed " The Health of the newly-installed Master , " of whom he spoke in very complimentary terms , and congratulated the brethren on the excellent choice they had made . They could not have chosen a more earnest and zealous Mason , or one who was better able to successfully rule and guide the lodge . The toast was received and drunk with enthusiasm .

The W . M . replied in a very felicitous speech , in the course of which he thanked the brethren for having done him the honour of choosing him as their first Master , and felt confident , with the help of his officers and their loyal support , to work the lodge successfully . The next toast , "The Health of the Consecrating Officers and the Visiting Brethren , " was proposed by the W . M ., in appropriate terms and was drunk with great enthusiasm . Bro .
