minds of the occupiers of the Calder Valley in those early days , and the same energy and spirit appear still to exist in their midst . This is evidenced by the vigour with which the affairs of the Lodge of Eland have been conducted . The first W . M ., Bro . W . E . Smithies , who has been most ably and consistently supported by his acting Past Master , Bro . G . H . Parke , has throughout his year spared no pains to make the new institution flourish , and has undoubtedly infused into his brethren much of his own characteristic earnestness . The result has been very gratifying . There has been a

regular and full attendance , a never failing supply of work , and a careful attention to reverence , detail , and accuracy in the rendering of the ceremonial ritual . The lodge has held eight meetings sine ? its formation , and during that time has added nine new members to the roll of Mark Masons in West Yorkshire . Its funds are in a flourishing condition , and all its furniture , regalia , and the thousand and one little item % the want of which becomes rapidly felt , are supplied and paid for . The brethren of Eland Lodge may , therefore , look back upon the past with satisfaction and forward to the future with hope .

Letch Mason , was unfortunately unable to be present , and apologies for unavoidable absence were received from many other distinguished brethren .

The W . M . elect , Bro . Thomas Gaukroger Howell , was presented to the Installing Master by the Deputy . Bro . Howell , it may here be noted , is a most enthusiastic Mason ; one who devotes largely of his time and his ability to the pursuit of Masonic knowledge and the practice of Masonic virtue . He is a Past Master of the Mark Degree , having served with distinction in the chair of the Truth Lodge , No . 137 , Huddersficld , last year . He is a founder of the Lodge ot Eland , and has always shown the liveliest interest in its prosperity . Under his rule the brethren of Lodge 493 need fear no falling off , for if time , labour ,

and attention can command success , that success is as good as assured . The first portion of the installation ceremony was conducted by Bro . Smithies . Bro . G . H . Parke took the latter part , 11 P . Ms , forming the Board . Both acquitted themselves admirably . Bro . Howell , in graceful terms , and with appropriate remarks , invested his officers in the following order : Bros . W . E . Smithies , I . P . M . ; A . Rowe , S . W . ; j . Brook , J . W . ; A . Maude , M . O . ; J . F . Milner , S . O . ; G . Hoyle , J . O . ; J . Naylor , Chap . ; H . Beaumont , P . M ., Treas . ; R . E . Heaton , Sec ; A . E . Mitchell , S . D . ; A . W . Law , J . O . G . ; and H . Littlewood and A . Fielding , Stwds . Bro . W . E . Smithies , on the motion of Bro . G . H . Parke , seconded b y Bro . T . G . Howell , W . M ., was unanimously elected to represent the lodge on the Provincial Charity Committee . Still further honour awaited Bro . Smithies , for at this stage Bro . John Barker , Deputy Prov . G . M ., in the name of the lodge , presented to the retiring Master a very handsome Past Master ' s jewel . Bro . Barker spoke in strong terms of the Masonic work with which the name of Bro . Smithies had become associated , declared that this recognition from his brethren was well deserved , and wished him a long and continued life of usefulness

during which to wear it . Bro . Smithies having suitably acknowledged the gift , the Worshipful Master made the usual inquiries previous to closing the lodge . The Deputy Provincial Grand Master at once rose and explained that as that might be the only opportunity that he would have during the evening , as he must leave early , he could not let it pass without offering his congratulations to Bro . Howell upon obtaining the positionof W . M . of the Eland Lodge . Bro . Howell had worked for and worthily won Masonic position , and if the brethren would loyally support him as they had done his predecessor , he had not the slightest hesitation in

expressing his conviction that in its second year the Eland Lodge would equal , if it did not exceed , the reputation which it had so rapidly acquired . Bro . Howell's zeal they all knew ; his earnest desire to spend and be spent for the benefit of Freemasonry and its noble Institutions was also well-known to them , and his conscientious effort , to the best of his ability , to discharge his duty fully , they were bound to recognise and support . Let them do this and then the lodge would continue to prosper , they would be a happy and harmonious community , for which most desired consummation they had his heartiest good wishes . Before closing , the W . M . declared how proud and grateful he was , as a founder of

the lodge , to find himself placed in the chair as its second Master . It should be his earnest endeavour—in which he trusted they would all help him—to promote its interests , to increase its members , and generally to contribute to its prosperity . That he was prepared to do at all times , but more especially should that be so whilst it was his privilege to preside over its concerns . This concluded the proceedings ; the lodge was closed , and , as the accommodation in the Savile Lodge rooms is somewhat limited , the brethren adjourned to the Elland Town Hall for dinner . An excellent repast was served , at which all were the guests of

the Worshipful Master . Bro . Howell is an enthusiast in floriculture , and the lavish display of cut ( lowers on the tables and thc charming button-holes provided for all added no little to the bright and picturesque appearance which the scene presented . Full justice was done to the bountiful fare provided , after which the toast list was entered upon . This was interspersed with songs and duets by Bros . Rickard and Buckland , who , with conspicuous ability , contributed to the pleasure and enjoyment of the brethren . The W . M . briefly proposed "The Queen . " Having reached the age of 7 S years , and this being the 60 th year of her reign , her Gracious Majesty was , he was delighted

to say , still spared to us . He called upon them to drink to her continued health , still further length of years , and God bless her ! In proposing "The M . W . the Grand Master , " the Worshipful Master said that the Mark Masons owed much to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales . He looked after the organisation and interests of the Order with zeal and energy ; he was ever ready to do what he could—and he could do much—to advance the cause . He ( Bro . Howell ) had had the privilege of being present in Grand Lodge on the 2 nd March last when the Prince , for the 13 th time , was elected Grand Master of Mark Masonry . He railed upon them to drink heartily to the health , happiness , and long life of their Grand Master .

The next on the list was "The Right Hon . the Earl of Euston , M . W . Pro Grand Master ; the Viscount Dungarvan , R . W . Dep . Grand Master and the Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past . " In submitting this , Bro . Howell said : Brethren , — In proposing this toast , which I do most heartily , let me say that in the Earl of Euston we have an excellent pro , or substitute , foe our M . W . G . Master . We know him ; we have seen him amongst us . He visited us at Leeds in 1 S 95 , and he has promised to attend the Provincial Grand Lodge on the 4 th May . We know what deep interest he shows in Mark Masonry ; what time and care he devotes to it . We also know how strong

an advocate he is of the claims of the Mark Benevolent Fund . It behoves us , therefore , as good Yorkshiremen to attend in numbers at Sheffield and give him loyal support and hearty welcome . Of Viscount Dungarvan there was nothing but good could be said , and we shall , I trust , some day have the privilege of seeing him also in our midst . Of the Grand Officers we in West Yorkshire have our share , and some I am delighted to see present to-night . There is our excellent friend and good Deputy , Bro . John Barker , who is , I am pleased to say , an officer of Grand Lodge . There is also Bro . H . S . Holdsworth , who in his time has done great things for Mark Masonry , and there is Bro . Geo . H . Parke . Bro . Parke , as you all know , brethren , has been

unanimously elected Grand Treasurer of England , and I have much pleasure in coupling his name with the toast . Bro . Paike was received with much acclamation on rising to respond . He was proud , he said , to think that the office of Grand Treasurer of England should , for the first tim e , ccme to West Yoikshire in the Mark Degree and that it should be associated with his name . It was a great honour and he could assure them he esteemed it highly . H e would do his utmost to maintain the dignity as well as discharge the duty which so responsible an office entailed , and he thanked thc brethren most heartily for the many expressions of their good will , which he was continually receiving .

" The Worshipful Master of thc Eland Lodge " was , in the absence of the Prov . Gr and Master , proposed in able and elrquent terms by Bro . A . Maude , M . O . Knowing Br o . Howell so well Bro . Maude was able to do justice to the excellent qualities of the W orshi p ful Master . He paid gracefu 1 tribute to his merits and showed by his skilful an d feeling treatment of his subject that his heart was in his work . On Bro . Howell rising he met with the warmest possible reception . So protracted

and so hearty was it that it was some moments before silence could bc obtained . A last Bro . Howell ' s voice could bc heard . He said : Brethren , This , I assure you , is another proud moment in my Masonic life . No man who enters Freemasonry , who is worth his salt , fails to aspire to fill the chair of his lodge . I have aspired and through your kindness succeed Bro . Smithies , and become second W . M . of the Eland Lodge . You will , I am sure , take it from me , that in your interest I will do my uttermost , that I will give time , labour , and attention , during my year , and that Masonically speaking the Lodge of Eland shall be my first and chief concern . As W . M . of the Tiuth Lodge ,

No . 137 , I endeavoured to do my duty both to the brethren individually and to the lodge as a community . During that year we did not fail to respond to the appeal which was made by our Provincial Grand Master , when he took the chair at the Festival in aid of the Mark Benevolent Fund . This year I have no doubt I shall also be able to count upon the generous assistance of my brethren of Lodge 493 . A W . M . if he has gained the confidence of his brethren—as I believe I have—has immense power for good , and I

want us all to work together and to strive our utmost to make thc Lodge of Eland sustain the position it has already taken , so that we may be able honestly to say that it stands second to none in the Province . This , with your help we can achieve , and this is what we must set ourselves to do . I thank you all , brethren , for the kindness shown me in the reception of this toast . I especially thank Bro . Maude for the many expressions of his goodwill , and I also tender my gratitude to the distinguished visitors and warmhearted friends who have honoured me by joining in our proceedings to-day .

"The Installing Officers , Bros . Parke and Smithies , " was proposed by Bro . S . Dyson , and duly acknowledged . The other toasts were " The Mark Benevolent Fund , " which was taken in hand by Bro . Smithies ; " The Visiting Brethren , " submitted by Bro . A . Rowe ; and " The Officers of the Eland Lodge . " AH were well received and heartily drunk .

The whole proceedings were a success from beginning to end , and we do mast sincerely congratulate Bro . Howell upon his undoubted popularity , and upon the excellent arrangements which he made to secure the comfort and enjoyment of his guests . We trust the Lodge of Eland , which has commenced its second year so auspiciously , may continue its prosperity and may never lack the guidance andsupport of so excellent a Mason as its present VVorshipful Master .

Shadwell Clerke Chapter , No . 107 . The last meeting of the season was held at 33 , Golden-square , W ., on Tuesday , the 13 th inst . In consequence of the absence , through illness , of the M . W . S ., Bro . W . M . Stiles , the chair was taken by Bro . R . C . Leversedge . The only business before the chapter was the election of M . W . S . and Treasurer , the result being unanimous in favour of Bro . Arthur H . Scurrah , iS ° , as M . W . S ., and Bro . Henry Lovegrove , 31 , as Treas . Many members expressed their great regret at the illness during his year of office of the M . W . S . At the close of the proceedings the brethren dined at the Criterion .

Earl of Lathom Chapter , No . 137 . A meeting of this chapter was held at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell , on Friday , the 2 nd inst ., when there were present Bros . Major G . H . N . Bridges , M . W . S . ; Rev . C . E . L . Wright , 30 , Prelate ; R . J . Voisey , ist General ; Dr . W . Cock , 2 nd General ; Frank Williams , Treas . ; Capt . George Hearn 30 , Recorder ; W . Briant ,

, Raphael ; Earl of Portarlington , D . C . ; J . A . Fletcher , Captain of the Guard ; H . F . Greig , Stwd . ; Rev . W . Russell Finlay , G . J . Allen , S . G . Bonner , S . F . Mackway , Major J . A . Thornhill , and Earl of Lathom , 33 , M . P . Sov ., G . C . ( Hon . Treas . ) The visitors included Bros . E . Letchworth , 33 ; Thompson Lyon , Victory Chapter ; and others .

The chapter having been opened , a ballot was taken for five candidates for perfection , which proved favourable , of these Bros . R . A . Marshall , P . M . 1216 and 2621 ; Colonel Ernest Villiers , P . M . 121 b "; and W . A . Perry , 101 , being in attendance , received the preliminary Degrees from III . Bro . Rev . C . E . L . Wright , and were then duly perfected as Princes Rose Croix , the accolade being given by Bro . the Earl of Lathom . With this exception the whole of the beautiful ceremonial was most impressively rendered by the M . W . S . and his officers , Bro . Voisey , in the unavoidable absence of Bro . Capt .

Richard-Parry , acting as Marsnal . The election of M . W . S . then took place , resulting in the choice of Bro . Voisey , Bro . Frank Williams b = ing again selected for the responsible position of Treasurer . The alms having been collected and candidates proposed , the M . W . S . called the attention . of thc brethren to the fact that their senior honorary member , Bro . the Earl of Lathom , Most Puissant Sovereign Grand Commander , was present and had taken part in the ceremonial . It was , he felt sure , the wish of the brethren of the chapter that there should appear upon the minutes their cordial thanks

to Lord Lathom for the many kindnesses they had received at his hands , first in allowing them the use of his name and arms , again in accepting honorary membership and the founder's jewel , but more than all , that he had , in the midst of the manifold engagements which his duties as Lord Chamberlain must entail , in this great year of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee , found time to com ; amongst them and take an active part in the work . This , upon being seconded by the Illustrious Prelate and put to the brethren , was carried by acclamation . Bro . Lord Lathom said that he had been

disappointed at being unable to bs present at the consecration of the chapter in November last , but it had given him the greatest pleasure to be there that evening and to witness the admirable working , hc sincerely wished every success to the chapter . Bro . Lord Portarlington then gave notice of motion that a Past Sovereign ' s jewel be presented to Bro . Major Bridges upon his retirement from the chair . The third point having been given the chapter was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet , After which the toast of " The Queen " having been duly honoured , That of "The Supreme Council" was proposed by the M . W . S ., who remarked

that at the consecration they were honoured by the presence of six out of the nin ; numbers of that august body , to-day they welcomed another and the most influential of all . Throughout the world the name of Lord Lathom was honoured , and never a day passed without his health being proposed and heartily drunk as the bsloved second in command in English Freemasonry , but only to a few Masonic lodges and chapters outside his own Province of West Lancashire was his lordship able to accord the honour of his presence , and this was one of those rare cases and every member of the chapter felt highly gratified and most heartily welcomed one , whose courtly presence , genial manner , and interest in the ceremonial had been alike conspicuous .

Lord Lathom , in reply , said he had been happy to snatch a few hours' relaxation amidst thc very considerable amount of hard work that fell to his lot in his oificial capacity as Lord Chamberlain , and assured the brethren that it had given him sincere pleasure to come amongst them and to note the excellent progress that the ciapter was making , which , however , was not surprising when he found everyone so expert in the various duties that devolved upon them . He took that opportunity to propose " The Health of their M . W . S ., " whose work that evening had been such as to dsserve thsir highest approbation . The toast having been duly honoured

, The M . W . S . thanked Lord Lathom for his kindly words , and the brethren for their cordial endorsement . He assured them all that he had the welfare of the chapter at heart , and hoped to see it take a place among the Rose Croix chapters of London , worthy of the exalted name it bore . With regard to the work upon which such praise had been bestowed , the M . W . S . said that he had the happiness of being associated with some of the best workers in South London , and hoped in the future to do so even better as it had to be borne in mind that this was the first occasion upon which they had had an opportunity of woi king together .

Ihe toastof "The Viiitors " was responded to by 111 . Bro . Le' . chworth , 33 ° , in a most genial and encouraging speech . The newly-perfected brethren severally replied to their toast , all expressing great admiration of the beautiful ceremony , and delight at receiving the accolade at the hands of the S . G . C .

Bro . Voisey , AI . W . S . elect / responded for " The Ofiicers , " and thanked the brethren tor electing him to the chair . „ . Tn <* , > ous toasts were interspersed with songs by Bros . Finlay , Voisey , Mackway , Marshall , and Lord Portarlington . The Fail cl' Lathom Rose Croix Chapter is the only one in South London , and ' . *; ° f - SeS excellent furniture , inost of which has been presented by the toundsis . Most of its members are enthusiastic Masons , who have done excellent work in other Degrees , and we feel sure that a prosperous career is before it .

Parke .

W . S ., Bro . W .
