for their reception of the toast , but also the W . M . for the very kind manner in which he had referred to his work , and the approbation with which those remarks had been received . It could not fail to be a pleasure to any VV . M . who had gone through the work to look back and think he had met with approbation , and it was also a satisfaction to know that during his year the lodge over which he had
presided had prospered , and altogether was all the better for his having occupied the chair . Those were his feelings that night , for he looked back with satisfaction to the work he had had the honour to do . On one occasion he had five candidates , on the next four candidates and one joining member , and now he had advanced another'brother that evening , whom he was told had already made himself
competent to perform any duty in the Craft , from l . G . to W . M . It was not only in numbers that a lodg-e prospered , but also from the characters of the men in it . He had reason to be proud of the fact that during his year he had had the honour of advancing so distinguished a Mason as Bro . Frederick West . For two years as a Provincial Grand Officer in the Craft and
Arch it had been his duty and great pleasure to serve under Bro . West , and of course it was quite a new experience for him to be the W . M . and Bro . West the candidate . They had every reason to congratulate themselves on having that brother in their lodge , for if he had gone to what he might term " swell" lodges they would have received him with open arms , but it was a great satisfaction to them that
Bro . West chose a lodg-e meeting in the town where he lived , where he was so well known , and , therefore , where he was most respected . He ( the I . P . M . ) had received many favours from the lodge , for in October last they nominated him Grand Steward ; in March they voted him a jewel , which he should always wear with pleasure , and which would remind him how cordially he had been received , and
that day they had appointed him Steward to represent them at the next Festival of the Mark Benevolent Fund . Several brethren had joined together and given him five guineas , and he had no doubt others would assist . He highly valued all those honours , and most of all because he knew they were the outcome of that kindness and fraternal regard which it was his great pleasure to know they felt towards him . Bro . Green , P . P . G . O ., returned thanks on behalf of
"The Visitors , " and "The Treasurer and Secretary " and " The Officers " having been honoured , Bro . F . West , S . W ., replying for the latter , the Tyler ' s toast closed a pleasant gathering . Bro . John Rhodes , P . P . G . O ., ably presided at the pianoforte , and rendered a new piece of his own composition" Idylle " —which was highly appreciated by those present both for its tasteful melody and the ability with which it was executed .
