Previous to the sermon the brethren of the local lodges , together with deputations _ from the surrounding district , assembled in the Masonic Hall and marched in procession to the church . In the course of a very able and interesting sermon the reverend
gentleman remarked that Freemasonry was essentially religious in its nature , that it was a very simple but a very broad and far-reaching interpretation of religion , and that it had preserved its interpretation in all its simplicity throughout many ages in spite of endless changes , in spite of eternal war in Churches , and in spite of low grovelling men of all sects and all Churches . Freemasonry was
simple—extremely simple—in its belief ; it was essentially practical in its aim , and was confined by no narrowness in its embrace or by crotchets in its helpfulness . He did not say that Freemasons were always all what they should be any more than other people , but he was speaking at present of Freemasonry and not Freemasons . The board of management reported that the receipts for the year amounted to £ 2380 , an increase of ^* 2 iS over those of the previous year . The number of patients relieved was 4345 , of whom 99 were in-patients . The increased income , combined with the economy practised
in the hospital , has enabled the board to reduce the debts from £ 93 2 to £ 738 , whilst at the same time increasing the number of beds from 16 to 32 . Special stress was laid upon the fact that the hospital was recently registered as a benevolent society under the Friendly Societies' Act . This step , it was pointed out , was taken before the appointment of the Lords' Committee on hospital management which is
now sitting , and the St . John ' s Hospital had thus set an example which might , with advantage , be followed by similar institutions elsewhere . It is claimed that the public have recently shown increased confidence in the hospital by flocking to it in greater numbers , and the board has met this demand by opening the out-patient department on
Saturdays between 3 and 6 . They conclude by stating that the accounts are kept hy a chartered accountant , who attends at the hospital every week , and whose balance sheet , duly audited , was appended to the report .
On the motion of Alderman Gould , J . P ., the report and statement of accounts were adopted .
