ATHOL LODGES . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Having , through the courtesy of the esteemed Grand Secretary , Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , been oermitted to search the Archives in Grand Lodge for materials for my new work on Masonic Records , 1 have discovered some particulars which I venture to think will be of general

interest to the Craft . In pursuing my researches last week , specially amongst the records ' of the Athol or Ancient Masons ( in which I received very valuable assistance from Bro . H . Sadler ) , I discovered at the end of one of the early Athol Registers several lists of lodges , which were of peculiar value to me in my present investigations , inasmuch as they give the dates of warrants and places of meeting of all the Athol Lodges in 1751 , 1752 , and 175 s , the details

ofjwhich will appear in " Masonic Records . " But the matter of special interest and importance is , that in December 1752 there was a " closing up" of the ancient numbers ( after the example of the Moderns in 1740 ) , which does not appear to have ever been noticed until now ( vide Gould ' s Athol Lodges , p . vi . ) , and for the benefit of all whom it may concern , 1 transcribe the heading of the list of 1752 , namely : —

Dec . 27 , 1752 . Anno Lap 5752 . Grand Lodge in due form assembled at the Five Bells Tavern , in Wich Street , Strand , London , Bro . Thos . Blower , Mastr . of ( then ) No . S in the chair . Ordered the members of Nos . 7 & 10 shoud be discontinued in this Book for their disobedience of the 21 st Rule of the Grand ( sic ) , and the following be the true list and numbers of all the Antient Regular Lodges in and about London , Anno Lap 5752 . "

The dates of constitution of the lodges named in the several lists prove , without doubt , that all the lodges then warranted from No . 7 to No . 16 " took other numbers in December , 1 752 ; No . 16 , being the last lodge warranted prior to this " closing up , " becoming No . 14 at that date . There is also a minute bearing- on this subject in Vol . I . of the Athol Minute Books , dated December 6 th , 1752 , which appears to be the authority for the alteration made on the 27 th of the same month . It reads as follows :

Resolved unanimously . That the Lodges who , by neglect or disobedience , have forfeited their Rank or Number , shall be discontinued on the Registry , and the Junior Lodges who have proved themselves faithful friends of the Ancient Craft shall henceforth bear the Title or Number so forfeited . The distribution to be according to seniority . " I trust the foregoing will prove as interesting to the Craft as it is gratifying to me to record . —Yours fraternally , JNO . LANE , P . "A SLANG PHRASE . " To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Your leader writer is evidently better acquainted with the statistics of the various great Charities of the Craft , than with the volume of the Sacred Law . The expression which he calls a slang phrase , "the very skin of his teeth , " may be found in Job xix ., 20 : "I am escaped with the skin of my teeth . "—I am , yours fraternally , DRYASDUST .

In order to assist my friend and brother , John Lane , in the preparation of his great work , to be entitled " Masonic Records , " I am anxious to see all the copies known of the printed proceedings of the " Atholl " Grand Lodge , before the year 1 S 02 . Brethren having copies to lend , or sell for that matter , will kindly let me know at once , and if such " proceedings " cannot be sent me on loan , then I will state

how they can be utilized for the purpose in hand . I feel assured there are many of these printed sheets scattered about , before the year 1 S 02 , for already , Bro . Patchitt , of Nottingham , has kindly lent me two copies , and I can promise that an excellent use of all such papers will be made by Bra , John Lane and myself . Bro . Lane lias just returned

from his examination of the Grand Lodge archives , through the unvarying courtesy of the Grand Secretary , but as there are no printed proceedings in that famous collection earlier than 1 S 02 , he has now to depend upon lodge officials , and Masonic students for assistance in tracing "Atholl " Lodges prior to that period , by the printed " Quarterly Communications . After the minutes of the election meeting had been confirmed and the audit reported adopted , showing a good balance in hands of the Treasurer , Bro . Yeomans , P . M ., presented Bro . John Potter , S . W . and W . M . elect , to the W . M . for installation , which ceremony was performed in the most impressive and faultless manner for which Bro .
