proposed , in the absence of Bro . Slyman , " That in recognition of the long and faithful services to the lodge of the Secretary , he be presented with his Masonic full-dress regalia as Past Provincial Grand Sword Bearer . " The motion having been seconded by Bro . Stroud , P . M ., and supported by Bro . Woodmason , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , was carried unanimously . Bro . J . Bartlett , W . M ., said that it
gave him very great pleasure to present the Grand Office regalia that had been voted by the lodge to their esteemed Brother Stephen A . Cooper , who had most ably performed the duties of Secretary tothe Unity Lodge for about 10 years past . He hoped that they would have the pleasure of seeing Bro . Cooper wear that becoming clothing for many years to come . Bro . Cooper , P . M . and Sec , having
thanked the W . M . for the kind expressions with which he had referred to the manner in which the Secretary ' s duties had been performed , tendered his acknowledgments to the brethren for having shown their approval of his work in so tangible a manner as by voting him his full-dress Masonic clothing as P . P . G . S . B . The VV . M . said that he had now the pleasure to present to the I . P . M ., Bro
Dr . Goodchild , a Past Master's jewel , which had been voted to him by the lodge for the very able manner in which he had carried out his duties as Master of the Unity Lodge during the past twelve months and presided over it . It gave him much pleasure to invest Bro . Dr . Goodchild with that mark of the lodge's appreciation of his services , and he trusted that the worthy brother would long be spared to
wear it among the multitude of those jewels with which he was already adorned . Bro . Dr . Goodchild having said a few words in acknowledgment of the compliment , and there being no further business , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet room , where they were served with a dinner which reflected great credit on the host , Bro . J . H . Hodsdon .
After dinner the customary toasts were proposed . With the toast of " Bro . Raymond H . Thrupp , Deputy Prov . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the name of Bro . Woodmason , P . P . G . D . C ., was coupled . In reply , Bro . Woodmason said that it gave him very great pleasure to respond to that toast , as Bro . Raymond
H . Thrupp was an honour to the Province of Middlesex . He went on to recommend every brother to visit Provincial Grand Lodge . Their Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Sir Francis Burdett , was a wonderful man , for though he was 77 years of age he still carried on the control ofthe province with marvellous ability . Bro . Woodmason , in conclusion , hoped that he himself might yet be spared many years
to represent the Prov . Grand Officers in the Unity Lodge . Bro . Dr . Goodchild said he had the honour to propose "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " but as Bro . Bartlett was not so well known to him as to the brethren , any remarks from him would be superfluous , and he would therefore confine himself to asking them to be upstanding and to drink Bro . Bartlett's health .
The Worshipful Master , in reply , thanked the brethren very kindly for the way in which they had drunk his health . He found himself in a novel position , and until he got more used to it , he trusted they would overlook his shortcomings , if he were not able to do all he desired . He trusted that during his year of office he might be able so to perform the duties of Master that when he had run his course they
might be satisfied with his conduct in the chair . After again thanking them for the way in which they had received the toast , he proceeded to propose " The Health of the Visitors , " with which he coupled the names of Bros . R . P . Stevens , P . M . 901 ; R . Glasspool , P . M . 723 ; and the Rev . T . McDugall Mundle , VV . M . 2045 , who responded . The Worshipful Master then proposed " The Health of
the I . P . M ., Bro . Dr . Goodchild , " whom they all knew as a good worker and an enthusiastic Mason , and who during his year of office had done his work in a very able manner . Bro . Dr . Goodchild , in reply , said that he had always done his best for the lodge , but he must apologise for the way in which he performed the ceremonies on the present occasion , for , as a matter of fact , he was so hoarse that he
found it impossible to do justice to the ritual . He had that day performed a ceremony whicli he had not done for three years previously . The next toast proposed was " The Masonic Charities , " for which Bro . Slyman , P . M ., responded . He said it came upon him somewhat suddenly to have to respond ; he had hoped that there would have been someone present better fitted to do justice to that important toast who would have
spoken on this occasion . He was going to stand Steward at the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution as Vice-President , and was going to head his list pretty well . He was indebted to the Unity Lodge for the 10 guineas which they had voted for the purpose , and for which he tendered them his grateful thanks . Bro . Cook also had placed five guineas on his list , and he hoped that when he sent round a notice to the brethren
individually they would consider it and support his Stewardship . He had stood once before for the Charities in the Unity Lodge . On this occasion he hoped they would do the very best they could for him , and show an amount that the lodge would be proud of ; the Charity had a double claim , as it was the Jubilee year . The event would take place early in the coming year , and it was to be borne in mind
that on this occasion their votes would be doubled . Bro . Stephen A . Cooper , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., Secretary , responded on behalf of the Past Masters to the toast of their health . He said it gave him great pleasure to return thanks for himself and the Past Masters , more especially for that kind mark of favour which they had bestowed upon him for his 10 years' service as Secretary of the lodge .
He hoped he should long be able to wear it , and he assured them that his association with the Unity Lodge would be , so far as it rested with him , as long as his life was given to him . He was appointed to the office ol Secretary 10 years ago , and he hoped he had not disgraced it . Bro . Parsons , P . M ., also replied .
Bros . J . Crook , S . W ., and John T . Haly , J . W ., responded for " The Officers of the Lodge" on their health being proposed j and then the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings of a very successful meeting , the enjoyment of which was enhanced by Bros . Packer , Harris , Budd , Bannell , Parsons , and Haly , who contributed some excellent songs during the intervals between the speeches .

J . H . Vaux , P . P . G . Stwd ., as Worshipful Master . The room in which the lodge usually meets being insufficient to accommodate the gathering expected , the large restaurant attached to the hotel was called into requisition , and being plentifully and artistically adorned with flags , pot plants , & c , presented a very charming and handsome appearance . The proceedings having commenced with the initiation of
a resident into the mysteries of the Craft , Bro . A . J . H . Ward , P . P . G . Reg ., I . P . M ., proceeded to perform the impressive ceremony of the day , which he did in his accustomed thorough and perfect manner . The officers for the year were invested as follows : Bros . A . J . H . W ., as representative of the lodge on the Essex Provincial Charity Committee , remarking that Bro .
Clowes had filled that position on their behalf for many years , and they could not have a better brother to look after their interests . Bro . A . J . H . Ward seconded the proposition , which was unanimously carried . Bro . A . J . H . VVard then asked the VV . M . to accept at the hands of the lodge a Past Master's jewel as a tangible proof of the esteem in which he was held amongst them . When a year ago they
elected Bro . Vaux to the chair , they felt certain he would make a thoroughly efficient W . M ., and past events had confirmed their prognostications . The brethren felt much indebted to him for consenting to preside over them another year , and trusted that he would look upon the jewel as an earnest of their gratitude . Bro . Ward then placed the jewel on the breast of Bro . Vaux amidst the hearty
plaudits of those present . The VV . M . briefly acknowledged the presentation . He said he was very grateful for the kind feeling which had prompted the gift , and should always wear the jewel with pride . In taking the chair last year , he determined to do his best for the welfare of the lodge and it would be his endeavour to do the same during the coming 12 months . The jewel , which was specially designed
and very handsome , bears the following inscription : " Presented , to VV . Bro . J . TL Vaux by the Past Masters , Wardens , and brethren of Lodge Star in the East , No . 650 , in recognition of his valuable services to the Lodge as VV . M . during the year 1 S 91-2 . " The W . M . then stated that , feeling - desirous of acknowledging the kind and efficient services of their Secretary , Bro . Sanders , he would ask him
to accept a Secretary ' s jewel at his hands . Bro . Sanders , in acknowledgment , said the present had taken him greatly by surprise , and he felt quite unequal to thanking adequately their VV . M . for that proof of his esteem . On the motion of Bro . A . J . H . Ward , seconded by Bro . G . T . Helsdon , P . M ., the VV . M . was appointed to represent
the lodge at the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and £ 10 ios . was voted from the lodge funds to head the list . The visitors present having heartily greeted the reinstalled VV . M ., the lodge was closed , and a banquet afterwards took place .
