have occupied the chair , but nervousness or bashfulness was not exactly the cause . He felt that he had too much business in hand to give his time to thc duties , and as his desire in Masonry was to carry everything out to the best of his ability , he found it would be impossible for him then to do so in a perfect manner . During the coming year he trusted that the Past Masters , officers , and brethren would excuse
any imperfections on his part , and he hoped the officers would give their attention and carry out their duties in a satisfactory manner , which would be a great help to him . He again thanked them sincerely for the cordiality with which his health had been given and received . ! Bro . A . J . Martin , P . M . iSS , returned thanks on behalf of " The Visitors , " and congratulated the lodge on having
a Worshipful Master who was well able to sustain its reputation . The programme of work announced would enable Bro . Jenkins , VV . M ., to give him a proof of his merits , and 12 months hence he would have fairly earned the usual Past Master ' s jewel . Several other visiting brethren having replied , the Worshipful Master gave "The Immediate Past Master , " and said it was a most agreeable toast . Bro . Oldlield , the
I . P . M ., had done his work in every way satisfactorily to the lodge . They all knew the l . P . M . 's heart was in Freemasonry , and that he was always doing what he could for the aged and the young . On three occasions Bro . Oldlield , I . P . M ., had served as Steward for the Masonic Institutions , and that showed well for so young a Master . He ( the W . M . ) was a member of the lodge when Bro . Oldlield was initiated , something like nine years ago , and since then that brother had done all in his power for the benefit of
Freemasonry . Bro . F . F . W . Oldlield , I . P . M ., said he rose for the first time as their Immediate Past Master to return heartfelt thanks for the kindly reception given the toast , the good feeling shown towards him , and for the jewel presented to him , which he hoped to be spared many years to wear . Regarding the Charities , he had always made it his duty to
hold out the hand of friendship to any brother requiring assistance , and not to find fault . The W . M . then submitted "The Past Masters , " and said the lodge had something to be proud of in their Past Masters .. They were always present in a body to support the W . M . and give any assistance required .
The Past Masters present responded . Bros . J . A . Smith , P . M ., Treas ., and Hy . VVood , P . M ., Sec , acknowledged the toast of their health , and congratulated the Iodge on the highly satisfactory condition in which it was at the present time . "The Officers" was next given , and the Tyler ' s toast brought to a close an enjoyable and successful meeting .
Blackheath Lodge ( No . 1320 ) . —The regular meeting of this lodge was held at the Bridge House Hotel , London Bridge , on Thursday , the 15 th inst ., and was well attended by the members . The lodge was opened under the presidency of Bro . John Hooper , VV . M . ( who was installed at the last meeting in June ) , and the minutes of the last meeting were read and conlirmed . Bro . Arthur
Smith , who was initiated on that occasion , was now passed to the Degree of F . C . The VV . M . then called upon Bro . T . R . Cass , J . D ., to state the object of a motion which he was desirous of bringing before the lodge , and which concerned every member . Bro . Cass stated that since the removal of the lodge to London its members had greatly increased , and the lay members and some of the officers
were desirous the lodge should give its sanction to the formation of a lodge of instruction to be held at the Milkwood Tavern , Milkwood-road , near Loughborough Junction , which was admirably suited for the purpose , and within easy access of the City and other parts of London . He could assure the brethren present the lay members with himself had been working hard with some other brethren , assisted
by Bro . r . Hilton , P . M . ( who had been invited to act as Preceptor ) , for several weeks past to bring about the desired result , and that all the arrangements tor inaugurating it had been thoroughly looked after in every detail , and only needed the lodge ' s sanction , feeling certain it would prove one of the strongest and most useful lodges in South London . It was intended , he said , to hold the lodge on
Monday evenings , which was convenient to most of the members , and concluded his remarks by expressing a hope that the proposition would be unanimously supported by every member of the lodge present . The motion having been seconded by Bro . E . A . Rice , Secretary of the Provisional Committee , after a very full discussion it was carried unanimously . The VV . M . expressed his entire concurrence
with the resolution , and congratulated the brethren on the happy result , thanking those who had been thc means of carrying it out . Two gentlemen were afterwards proposed for initiation at the next meeting in December , and the lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a banquet , when the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and heartily responded to , and a most enjoyable
evening was spen !" , during which some excellent songs were given , in which Bros . Martin , Stunt , P . M ., Rushton Odell , Salter , E . Morson , Hobley , and Hinderwell took part . The Iodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet , which was excellently served by Bro . Buxton . Upon the removal of the cloth , the usual toasts followed . Bro . G . Everett , G . Treas ., responded for " The Grand Officers " in a speech of some length and merit . Bro . Westley gave "The VV . M . " In the course of his
speech he said that the VV . M . had that day shown the brethren that 'he was in every way worthy of the position that he held . No . 13 S 1 was now getting a very stronglodge , and it behoved those who aspired to fill the chair to work well at lodges of instruction . The W . M . ' s year of office thus far had been a most prosperous one > and he believed that it would continue to be so , as there were
several initiates coming forward during the session . The Worshipful Master having replied , gave "The Initiates . " Bros . Moore and Scutt having acknowledged the compliment , "The Health of the Visitors" followed , coupled with the names of Bros . R . Temple and Huntley .
" The Past Masters , " '" The treasurer and Secretary , " and " The Officers " terminated the proceedings , which were greatly enhanced by the instrumental and vocal exertions of Bros . Burn , Lundie , Buxton , Everett , and Richard Temple . The latter brother , of bavoy fame , gave several vocal morceaux , which were highly appreciated .
Duke of Connaught Lodge ( No . 155 S ) . — A very successful meeting was held at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell , on Thursday , the Sth inst ., when Bro . A . Blenkarn was installed as the VV . P . L . Kingsbury , Org . ; and H . Thomas , Tyler . The W . M . then initiated Messrs . Green , Ball , and Hogg into Freemasonry in an efficient and . impressive style , and afterwards presented Bro . Catt , I . P . M ., with a Past Master ' s jewel as a mark of the appreciation of the brethren for his services during his year of office . Lodge was closed , and an excellent banquet was served in
hrst-class style in the large hall , under the superintendence of Mrs . Venables . The usual toasts followed , the speeches being interspersed with items from a programme of music performed under the direction of Bro . Stuart Lane , assisted by Madame Wiberg , Madame Edith Fuller , Miss Alice Fuller , Bro . Edwin Pownall , and Mr . J . B . Hardwicke .
" The Queen and the Craft" and " H . R . H . the Prince of VVales , M . W . G . M ., " having been heartily honoured , " The Grand Officers " was given in cordial terms by the Worshipful Master . Bro . James Terry , P . G . S . B ., thanked the Worshipful Master for coupling his name , but as he would perhaps have an opportunity of speaking at a later hour he should
leave his good friend Bro . Mercer to reply to that toast . Bro . D . Mercer , P . G . Purst ., said that only those who attended Grand Lodge could value the services rendered by the Grand Officers , and if it were not for those officers the Craft would not be in so promising a state . He thanked the Worshipful Master ior the honour conferred by his invitation , and hoped that during his year of office he would
have nothing to complain of , and nothing but peace and prosperity . The I . P . M ., in giving "The Health ofthe Worshipful Master , " said that in the presence of brethren who had come from Grand Lodge he felt a very great amount of diffidence in proposing tnat toast , but he was told it was his duty , and therefore he must do it to the best of his ability .
In submitting the toast he was sure he was only asking tho brethren to do that which everyone had in his heart most readily and most enthusiastically to do . They knew that Bro . Blenkarn had worked through the offices and done his duty step by step , and had stuck to them when they were nearly overwhelmed , and they hailed him with joy and gladness as a brother whom they could with confidence
place in the chair . He had always looked upon Bro . Blenkarn as one of the coming men in Freemasonry from the time he joined , because he possessed the necessary qualifications to make his mark in the Masonic world and hold his own among the members of his lodge . He was sure that in their Worshipful Master they had a good and a thorough Freemason , and he therefore asked the brethren
to drink his health and wish him happiness and prosperity during his year of office . Bro . Arthur Blenkarn , W . M ., who was warmly received , said that the reception accorded him was indeed gratifying , and had taken him by surprise . He thanked the I . P . M . for the kind manner in which he had proposed the toast , and the brethren for the affable manner in which it had been received .
His heart was still with the brethren although he was W . M ., for he recollected the pleasant days he had spent among them . He thanked the lodge for allowing him to take the chair . It had been his ambition to become W . M ., and he owned that he should make it his duty to perform the duties in the manner in which they had been conducted by his predecessor , so that the brethren would be able to say " well done " at the termination of his year of office .

M . had said , some three or four years ago he should

have occupied the chair , but nervousness or bashfulness was not exactly the cause .
