He then pinned the jewel on Bro .
Ingham's breast , amid the loud and hearty applause of the brethren . Bro . Ingham responded in fitting terms . He thanked the officers and brethren for the kind and admirable support he had received during his year of office , and the fact that for the first time in their history they were coming abreast of other lodges in charitable effort . Their Prov .

jewel to Bro . A . J . Pearce for his past services . In his long Masonic career he never had a pleasanter duty to perform . That jewel , like the one presented to the I . P . M ., had been earned by merit , industry , goodwill , and deep Masonic feeling .
Bro . Pearce responded in appropriate terms . The usual loyal toasts were duly honoured , and songs , recitations , & c , were givjn by various brethren . Both the jewels , which were of massive gold , were splendid specimens of artistic workmanship which were presented during the evening .

The ceremony was admirably performed by the out going W . M ., Bro . G . Hallett . The newly-installed VV . M . then appointed his officers , those present being invested with the insignia of their respective offices , as follows : Bros . G .
Hallett , I . P . M . ; James Turton , S . VV . ; Edward Irwin Scott , J . VV . ; Henry Abbey , Treas . ; A . C . Jacob , Chap . ; G . de Paris , P . M ., Sec . ; J . Ewart , S . D . ; P . L . The lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where they sat down to an excellent
banquet served in faultless style by Messrs . Booth and Sons . The newly-installed VV . M ., Bro . E . G . Whittle , presided , and was supported by the officers of Grand Lodge , the Past Masters , and officers of Provincial Grand Lodge . Opening the toast list , the Worshipful Master , in eloquent terms , proposed "The Queen and the Craft , " which was duly honoured . He then coupled the toasts of
"TheM . W . Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales " and "The Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " to which Bros . R . Clowes and VV . Kuhe responded . The Worshi p ful Master next coupled the two toasts , "The Provincial Grand Master of Sussex , H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , " and "The Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . the Right Hon . Sir W . T . Marriott ,
Q . C , M . P ., P . G . Stwd ., and the Officers of the Provincial Grand Lodge , Present and Past . " The Duke of Connaught , he said , had given great evidence of his interest in Freemasonry in general , and in the Sussex Province particularly . He had many claims upon his time , but it was highly gratifying to find that his Royal Highness had consented to preside at the Provincial Grand Lodge to be held in the Royal
Pavilion on Thursday next . He ( the VV . M . ) expressed a hope that there would be a liberal response to the letter which had emanated from his Royal Highness relative to the annual Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . The province was admirably represented by Bro . Sir VV . T . Marriott , who was well-known outside the wide Masonic circle . The remaining officers also worked heartily
in the interests of the province . Bro . Sir VV . T . Marriott was warmly received on rising to respond . He spoke in eulogistic terms of the interest the Duke of Connaught took in the Province of Sussex , and but for his many duties his Royal Highness would , he said , be more frequently among them . Referring to the approaching visit of the Duke
of Connaught , he bore testimony to the indefatigable energy of the Provincial Grand Secretary , who had worked with great zeal in arranging the visit in conformity with the alterations in the Duke's plans . The visit of his Royal Highness would be warmly appreciated , and he was sure the brethren would give him a hearty and loyal welcome . It was not surprising , he said , that the Royal Family took an earnest interest in the Craft , for Freemasonry inculcated
the love of law and order , obedience to authority , and loyalty to the Throne and country . Bro . G . Hallett , I . P . M ., next proposed "The Worshipful Master . " He said he had great pleasure in submitting the toast , for Bro . Whittle had won the esteem of all the brethren , and would make an excellent Master of thelodge . He believed their newly-installed W . M . would do himself and thc lodge great credit .

Bro . Whittle , on rising to respond , was received with hearty and prolonged applause . Thanking Bro . Hallett for his kind remarks , he said he hoped that the lodge , after the losses it had experienced by deaths , would enter upon a new era of prosperity , and that the clouds had cleared away for many years . Speaking for himself , he said he fully appreciated the kind feeling of the brethren , and
would do his utmost to merit their confidence . In carrying out the duties of his office he had before him the good example of Bro . Hallett . He trusted that he , his officers , and the remaining brethren would continue to work together with that love and harmony which had hitherto characterised the lodge . He then presented Bro . Hallett with a Past Master's gold jewel as a mark of the highlv
meritorious manner in which he had carried out the duties of his office during the past year . In proposing " The Visitors , " the Worshipful Master said he and the brethren of the lodge gave a cordial welcome to their visitors . They were honoured b y the presence of the two Borough Members , the Mayor of Brighton , and the Mayor of Eastbourne , and he was proud
to say the Iodge numbered among its own members the Mayor elect of Brighton . This was responded to by Bro . H . S . Soper , the Mayor of Brighton , and Bro . Gerald Loder , M . P . The Worshipful Master proposed "The Past Masters , " to which Bro . G . Hallett responded . The remaining toasts were " The Officers of the Lodge , " acknowledged by Bros . Turton , Scott , and Stephens , and
the Tyler s toast . During the evening some pleasing songs were sung by Bros . Poole , Hallett , and Soper . The musical programme also included solos and concerted pieces by Signor Mezzetti ( ocarina ) , Mr . Lewis Mennich ( violin ) , and Miss Mennich ( piano ) , one of the most enjoyable morceaux being Gounod's " Ave Maria , " in which the three instrumentalists were joined by the W . M ., well known as an able performer on the ocarina .

A new departure in local Freemasonry , and one which cannot be too highly commended , was the introduction of lady visitors after the banquet . This pleasing circumstance was referred to by Bro . Marmaduke Tennant , D . P . G . M .,
who , in proposing "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " remarked that he saw no reason why the wives , daughters , and lady friends of Freemasons should not share in the great benefits to be derived from Freemasonry . He hailed with delight the innovation , and hoped it would be but the forerunner of a general custom . The Worshipful Master also expressed his delight at the
new departure , and said that if the ladies understood Freemasonry more thoroughly they would have for it a better appreciation , for they would discover that there was in it nothing to which they could take the slightest exception . He presented a splendid bouquet to Miss Tennant , who
was one of the lady visitors . An unusually attractive programme of vocal and instrumental music had been arranged by Bros . Kerman , Jenkins , and White . Amongst those who contributed tothe harmony were Misses Kerman and Grahame , and Bros . Proud , Kerman , Jenkins , Stuart , and Sheridan .

Tatton Egerton , M . P ., in presenting a Past Master ' s jewel to the retiring W . M ., Bro . Ingham , said that he had done solid and splendid work for Masonry in the province , and for that lodge in particular . He esteemed it a high honour and privilege , as one of the first members of the De Tatton Lodge , that he had been selected by the brethren to make the presentation .
Grand Master , Lord Egerton of Tatton , had , he was informed by the Prov . Grand Secretary , started a special fund , which it was proposed to raise during next year , for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and he was in hopes the De Tatton Lodge would make a substantial contribution . Bro . Edwin George Simpson , P . P . J . G . D ., the first Master of the lodge , afterwards presented a Secretary ' s
jewel to Bro . A .

Reports Of Masonic Meetings.
