to represent the lodge at the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and the sum of 100 guineas was voted on his list . The Audit report , showing a balance in hand of £ 25 6 17 s . 2 d ., was unanimously adopted . Other business was transacted , and the lodge was closed . After banquet the usual toasts were honoured . Bro . E . Aeworth , Prov . Grand Treasurer , replied for
" The Prov . Grand Officers , " after which Bro . Shurmur , I . P . M ., gave "The Worshipful Master , " and said there were many present who had most pleasant recollections of the successful , excellent , and dignified manner in which Bro . Holness passed through the chair of his mother lodge some six or eight years ago . Although the W . M . possessed a thorough knowledge of Freemasonry , he still frequently
attended lodges of instruction . The brethren all wished the VV . M . a happy and prosperous year , and it would be their own fault if the good beginning was not fully maintained . Bro . D . P . Holness , W . M ., having thanked the brethren , said the I . P . M . had truly remarked that he had begun well , and no efforts of his would be wanting to maintain the marvellous prosperity attained by the lodge . When that
lodge was being formed he had no idea the result would be a lodge with a reputation unparalleled in the history of Freemasonry . As the W . M . it was his bounden duty to sustain the prestige of the lodge , and when it was named Shurmur , which to him was a name more esteemed and respected than his own , no effort however great would be wanting to promote its best interests .
The Worshipful Master proposed "The Initiates , " and this having been acknowledged , he next gave " The Immediate Past Master , Bro . Shurmur , " remarking that he felt sure the name was revered by all in the room . He might say that he could challenge any assembly of men , and there would not be one who could conscientiously say Bro . Shurmur had ever done anything but what could be
admired . None knew the I . P . M . intimately without knowing the largeness of his heart , and he said it without flattery , as that would be repugnant to their esteemed brother's feelings . Bro . Shurmur was the most thorough man he ever knew in his life , and that lodge was one instance of it , for everything he took in hand was a success . The large assembly that evening , and the large assemblies in the past
testified to this fact , lt was customary at this meeting to present a Past Master ' s jewel to the I . P . M . as a slight token of recognition of his service , but unfortunately they were not in that position that evening as , although a sum had been voted for the purpose , the design had not been decided upon . He asked thebrethren to cordially drink the toast and express their sense of the great service the I . P . M . had rendered to the lodge .
Bro . Wm . Shurmur , P . P . G . Treas ., I . P . M ., said he was extremely grateful for the cordial reception given the toast . It was another manifestation of the extraordinary kindness he had always received from them , and which he should ever remember with feelings of the deepest gratitude . The brethren had shown remarkable zeal and interest in promoting the prosperity of the lodge . Many had honoured
them and the Province of Essex by recommending their friends and sons as initiates . He need hardly say how heartily they had been welcomed and how earnestly they had endeavoured to impress upon the candidates the dignity and importance of their ancient brotherhood . The best testimony they could possibly have that they had been successful had been evinced by the candidates
themselves . The initiates had been so favourably impressed , that many of them had regularly attended lodges of instiuction , and could discharge their duties in a highly creditable manner . The outcome of that enthusiasm and good feeling had culminated in their having constituted that—by far the largest lodge in the province , and perhaps under the Constitution of the Grand Lodge . Since the
consecration it had been their privilege and great pleasure to receive 57 initiates and between 30 and 40 joining members , and these numbers could have been largely increased had they not been so careful in their selection . Many had expressed a wish to join , but had been told they were not quite up to their standard , and some had been since initiated in other lod ges where they could not afford to be so particular . It was
rather amusing to hear the variety of reasons given for their success . They were indebted undoubtedly to the brilliant array of Past Masters who assisted at the foundation . He should ever regard the jewel voted to him as among the "lost precious of his Masonic possessions . It would always J'e a reminder of a pleasant year of office , and he trusted
the Great Architect , in his unbounded kindness , would spare Jjmi many years to be amongst the Past Masters of the Shurmur Lodge . Other toasts were given before the brethren separated . Bro . J . F . Haskins , Org ., presided at the pianoforte , and directed the musical arrangements .

Bro . T . Oates was subsequently duly raised to the Sublim e Degree of M . M ., and Bro . Cundell to F . C , the work being performed by the W . M ., assisted by the I . P . M . and Chaplain . Bro . DIDSBURY . Doric Lodge ( No . 2359 ) . —The regular meeting of this prosperous lodge was held on Saturday , the loth inst ., at the Didsbury Hotel . Notwithstanding the unpropitious state of the weather , no less than 32 members ^ and visitors were present . Bro . C . E . Towell , W . M ., presided , although he was suffering from severe indisposition . The
minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . The ballot was taken for Bro . J . E . Bott , 336 , as a joining member , and proved favourable . The ballot was also taken for Mr . W . H . Moss , and , proving favourable , he was initiated by the VV . M . There was a passing- and raising , the ceremonies being performed respectively by Bros . G . A . Myers , P . M ., Sec , and G . S . Smith , P . M . The lodge was
then closed by the W . M . After the long afternoon's work the brethren adjourned to partake of tea , which was admirably catered for by Bro . Fred . Stretch , S . W . When the cloth was removed , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed and responded to . The I . P . M . in giving "The Worshipful Master" said
it was the pleasantest duty he had had to perform during that day , especially under the circumstances , for they had all had feelings of doubt and misgiving whether he would be able to be with them that evening on account of indisposition , therefore it would be understood it was an extra pleasure to see him in his usual place , and although suffering from severe pain he had conducted the ceremonies ,
especially the initiation , in a masterly and impressive manner . That showed the great amount of interest and enthusiasm he had for Masonry in general and that lodge in particular , and it was a noble example for every member of the lodge to follow . From the manner in which Bro . Clare Edgar Towell had commenced his duties , they could feel sure the future of the lodge during the ensuing year would be one of
continued success . They would all wish the W . M . health and strength to go through his year of office , for he was enthusiastic to a degree in Freemasonry , and having put his hand to the gavel , would give satisfaction to the lodge , and carry out all the obligations his high position imposed upon him , and he would ask them to drink to the health of their Worshipful Master , which was received with
continued applause . The Worshipful Master , in responding , said that the overwhelming applause which followed the toast of his health had really almost overcome him , and he was very grateful to feel that he was held in such esteem . But his heart was so full of emotion that he could not then express himself as he would liked to have done . But he
desired that every member and every visitor present there that evening would consider themselves his guests , and concluded by thanking Bro . G . A . Myers , P . M ., and the I . P . M . for the assistance they had given him that day and at all times . He then proposed " The Healths of the I . P . M . and Bro . Myers . " Both the brethren responded , and assured the W . M . that
he would always have their hearty support and every assistance they could give him . The Worshipful Master then proposed " The Visiting-Brethren , " which toast was as usual well received , and responded to by Bros . A . H . Duffin , W . M . 1134 ; Roland , P . M . ; and others . Other toasts followed , including "The Absent Members , "
the W . M . in his remarks specially mentioning the name of Bro . James Sharpies , who unfortunately has had a very severe attack of bronchitis , consequently he was not able to be present . During the afternoon he had received a telegram from him expressing " Hearty good wishes , " and he ( the VV . M . ) hoped he would soon be restored to health . The toast was received with applause , and , in response , Bro . W . Sharpies said he would convey the kind remarks
made by the VV . M . to his father , and he was sure it would be very gratifying to him to think that he had not been forgotten although he was absent . The pleasure of the evening was greatly enhanced by a capital programme , consisting of a capital recitation by Bro . F . Morgan , and songs were contributed by Bros . Willie Sharpies , G . S . Smith , J . Ward , F . Stretch , G . A . Myers , and J . Roland , Bro . Westbrook being the accompanist . The following brethren were present : Bros . C . E . Towell ,

The Worshipful Master , in reply , thanked the brethren for the great warmth with which they had received his health . The proposer of the toast had flattered his working
too much , for he was by no means satisfied with himself . He hoped to do better next time , when he trusted that the lodge would have to welcome three more initiates into their midst . "The Initiates" followed , and was acknowledged by Bros . Dove , Clark , and Rogers .

minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed .
