regiment . He again thanked them , and as long ashe wore the jewel , he hoped he should be connected with their regiment and their lodge . Bro . Newman , P . P . G . W . Hants and Isle of Wight , in responding for "The Visitors , " which was proposed in felicitous terms by the W . M ., thanked the members very sincerely for the hospitality shown the visiting brethren .

When he heard that this lodge was to be started he thought it was a good thing and a wise idea . He could remember an uncle of his own who was an old Mason , who said he always liked to see volunteers in office in a lodge , for the ceremonies in that case were admirably conducted , as the officers were accustomed to move promptly at the word of command . It was the first time he had visited a Volunteer

lodge , but his expectations have been fully realised . He thanked them most heartily for the hospitality extended to him , and he hoped to have the pleasure at different times to see them in his own province , and more especially in the small island with which he was connected . Bros . Col . R . Wilde and Drysdale also replied . "The Past Masters" was next given , and responded

evening . During the evening an excellent selection of music was given , under the direction of Bro . Delevanti , P . M ., Org ., assisted by Miss Camilla Page , and Bros . Weston , Pritchard , Prenton , Hambleton , E . Delevanti , Cornish , and F . Delevanti . —

THE ABBEY LODGE ( No . 2030 ) . — The brethren of this lodge assembled on the 12 th inst ., at the Town Hall , Westminster , under the presidency of the W . M ., Bro . William Sugg , P . P . G . D . of Wks . Surrey , and Bros . H . R . Baker and James Gibson , P . M . 1604 , respectively occupiedjthe Senior and Junior Wardens' chairs ; and the other officers present included Bros . W . H . Baker ,

Hambling , Stwds . ; and VV . Walkley , Tyler . The lay members present included Bros . J . E , Smith , J . E . Salway , F . Barker , C . Sweeting , T . Mussell , F . Charles , Cecil Mor . gan , Frank Morgan , Hayler , John Kent , Humphreys , R .

Wake , Rintoul , T . Cocks , Holder , Bartlett , and others . Bros . Burdett-Coutts , M . P ., P . M ., the first Master , S . G . D . Eng . ; the Rev . R . J . Simpson , P . G . Chap . ; with John Sampson Peaise , represented Grand Lodge , and a numerous list of visitors—always a feature of The Abbey meetings—included Bros , the Rev . F . J . Foakes-Jackson , P . G . C ., and S . W . 859 ; the Rev . John H . Rose ; Cantle , P . M . ; E ,

J . D . Bromley , G . E . Saunders , J . W . 1257 ; Charles W . Hastings , Power , W . T . Potts , G . Livingstone , M . Bristow , J , Watkins , W . L . Seaman , W . Jones , R . Parkes , T . H . Hobbs , B . Brett , and E . St . Clair , the accomplished Master of the La France Lodge . The motion to confer on Bro . Spink , P . M . 177 , honorary membership was lost on the ballot .

After the lodge business , which included the initiation of Messrs . F . W . Smith and William Yapp , the brethren dined together , the W . M . being supported by Bros . Burdett-Coutts , M . P ., and Seager Hunt , M . P ., and the distinguished visitors from Grand Lodge . The toasts of "The Queen , " "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . Master , and the other Rulers of the Craft , " were

received with the customary enthusiasm . On behalf of "The Grand Officers , Past and Present , " Bro . John Sampson Pearse , P . G . D ., P . M . of the Brittania Lodge , responded . In the course of his reply , Bro . Pearse said that it was now about a quarter of a century ago since he had the pleasure of initiating the present distinguished W . M . of the Abbey Lodge , Bro . Sugg , into Freemasonry .

Bro . Burdett-Coutts , M . P ., who also responded , said he with pleasure availed himself of the opportunities to meet the brethren of the Abbey Lodge , whom he trusted would be drawn closer and closer in the bonds of affection and confraternity . He wished all present a most happy Christmas and a prosperous new year . In response to loud calls , Bro . Simpson , P . G . Chap ., also responded .

The Immediate Past Master , Bro . F . Seager Hunt , proposed " The Health of the Worshipful Master , " referring to his distinguished career in Masonry , and to the excellence of his work in the lodge . He was sure that the woik could not be better performed by any Master . One more conversant with the ritual of Freemasonry than Bro . Sugg would be difficult to find , and it was certain that during his year of office The Abbey Lodge would gain additional lustre .

Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

The toast was drunk with much enthusiasm . Bro . Sugg , in reply , said that it did not often fall to the lot of a Worshipful Master to hear himself spoken of in such flattering terms . He did not think he deserved all the encomiums which had been passed , but he was sure that the brethren would believe him when he said that everything he did was done for the benefit of the lodge . Though

to some , perhaps , he might appear a little arbitrary in the discharge of his duties , he worked with an honest purpose , and he asked them to receive his advice and direction with that conviction . At the last meeting of the lodge thsir Immediate Past Master , through a family bereavement , was not present with them . Now Bro . Hunt was with them again it afforded him much pleasure to pin on his breast

the Past Master ' s jewel of The Abbey Lodge . Bro . Seager Hunt , P . M . ( who was greeted with great applause ) , said he knew very well that his achievements in the lodge would not have gained for him the proud distinction that nig-ht conferred . Circumstances , which he need not then enter into , were against him during his year of office . But the very fact that he was unable to give that

attention to the duties of the chair which he ought to have done , enhanced the value of the gift which he had received at the hands of their Master . It would always be regarded by him as an evidence of the great affection and kindly disposition of the brethren of The Abbey Lodge . The Initiates , Bros . Frederick William Smith and Wm . Yapp responded in felicitous terms to the toast of their

heallh , and the Worshipful Master then gave the toast of " The Visitors , " coupled with the names of Bros . St . Clair , VV . M . 2060 ; the Revs . F . Foakes Jackson and John H . Rose , who severally returned thanks . The W . M . said he was quite sure that very ! few words were necessary to recommend the toast of "The Past Masters of The Abbey Lodge , " and he should couple with it

the names of Bros . Burdett-Coutts and W . H . Baker . Bro . Burdett-Coutts , who was loudly cheered , said the principle " whatever was worth doing was worth doing well , " applied especially in Freemasonry , for the work was inspiriting and beautiful . The great success of The Abbey Lodge was due in no small degree to their perfect working , and it seemed the object of each succeeding Master to

emulate the work of his predecessor . Bro . W . H . Baker , P . M ., said , as their Treasurer he took the opportunity of saying that the lodge was financially in a sound condition . They had money in hand to meet nearly all their liabilities and outstandingj assets , which would leave them with a good balance . Every lodge had to pass through some vicissitudes , but he hoped the day was far

distant when anything would occur to mar the prosperity of The Abbey Lodge of Westminster . Bro . Shand , P . M ., who , as Secretary , responded to the toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary , " said he considered that he ought to be " au fait " with his duties , as being Secretary of another lodge—the City of Westminster —each of which met four times a year , he had the duties

repeated eight times annually , and the work of such a large lodge as The Abbey was no light task . His business , like the Treasurer ' s , was to a great extent a matter of figures , and he was happy that night to corroborate Bro . Baker ' s announcement of the soundness of their financial position . So lung as the brethren appreciated his services , so long he would give them with all his heart , but if they thought they could do better , he was ready to accept their command to

" right about turn . " The toast of " The Officers " was briefly responded to by the Wardens , and the Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to a conclusion . The pleasure of the evening- was greatly enhanced by songs given by Bros . Cantle , Newton , and Bartlett , the last-mentioned also very ably presiding at the pianoforte . The dinner was served by Bros . Bertram and Roberts , and the champagne was G . H . Mumms ' .

" Hearty good wishes were given by the visitors present , and all business being ended the lodge was closed in due form . The brethren met at the Inns of Court Hotel , where Bro . Gosden had provided a most excellent supper , which was very well served . The W . M . proposed the toasts of "The Oueen " and

"Ihe M . W . ihe Grand Master , Pro and D . G . M ., and other Grand Officers , Present and Past . " The latter toast was responded to by Bro . Francis , P . G . Stwd . Bio . Tew proposed "The Visitors" in very happy terms , offering them a most fraternal welcome to Lodge 212 S .

elected so worthy a brother to fill the chair during the ensuing year . The Worshipful Master elect responded in most feeling terms , and thanked the W . M . for his kind and encouraging remarks , and the brethren for their warm reception of them . He said they might rely upon him to do his best—if blessed with health—during the coming 12 months , and to maintain

the good name the lodge had already gained . He was glad to know that there were in the lodge so many good men and true , and he impressed upon the brethren to be equally careful in the future in proposing gentlemen for initiation , as the strength of the lodge did not consist on its numbers but on the high character of those admitted .

Bro . Cumberland , I . P . M ., then proposed "The Heallh of the VV . M ., Bro . Smithson , " who , he said , was held in such high esteem by them all . Bro . Smithson thanked the brethren for the kind reception he at all times received from them , and said how happy his year of office had been to him . Other toasts followed .

H . Mumms ' .
