After justice had been done to a well-provided banquet the usual loyal toasts were proposed , which were duly honoured . In giving "The Queen and Royal Arch Masonry" the M . E . Z . alluded to her Majesty ' s recent visit to Netley Hospital as evincing her sympathy with her wounded soldiers .
The M . E . Z . then gave "The Health of the First Grand Principal , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " which was most loyally drunk . "The Grand Officers , Present and Past , " was then presented by the M . E . Z ., who alluded in touching terms to the late Earl of Lathom . The sympathy of the companions was evinced in a marked manner , and the mournful memory of the distinguished companion observed in solemn silence .
The I . P . Z ., Comp . Hatton , gave "The Health of the M . E . Z . " lie spoke of his intimate , personal acquaintance with the M . E . Z . ; how as companions they had in harmony together pursued the path of duty , and that the chapter was to be congratulated on its new president . The M . E . Z . replied , thanking the I . P . Z . and the companions for the warm welcome he had received at their hands .
The M . E . Z . then gave the toast of " The I . P . Z ., Comp . Hatton . " He said it was indeed gratifying to him that his first official duty was that of pinning on the breast of his worthy predecessor the P . Z . ' s jewel which had been unanimously voted to him at the last convocation of the chapter . The loving cup was here sent round to the companions , the gift of the I . P . Z ., in which a mutual pledge of good fellowship was interchanged . The I . P . Z . replied , thanking the chapter for its mark of approbation , saying how proudly he should wear the P . Z . ' s jewel . Then came the toast of " The H . and J . " by the M . E . Z .

Whitlock , replied in a humorous manner , observing we have been told just now in harmonious that we are in very " good company , " it certainly was a great pleasure to him and he trusted it was so equally with all present . Z ., " Comp . E . L . Berry , at whose initiation into Freemasonry he had the pleasure of assisting at
the Emblematic Lodge . Since that period , many years ago , they had enjoyed an unbroken friendship . In ' iSgo , Comp . Berry took a very prominent part in founding this chapter , and it was owing very largely to his energy that it was so successful . The fact that Comp . Berry had been passed in the Principals' chair by several companions had been the subject of a great deal of pleasant " chaff " ; and although he had assumed an air of injured innocence , he had always accorded the heartiest support to the ruling M . E . Z . Comp . Berry ' s uniform high spirits were proverbial , and he was always cheerful , even under the most depressing circumstances . Having put his hand to the plough , the members kr . ew from past experience of the M . E . Z . what he meant to do .
Comp . E . L . Berry , M . E . Z ., in reply , said he had since 1890 been trying his hardest to get into that most exalted position , and he had now arrived there , thanks to the unanimous vote of the companions . He trusted they would always find him dignified in the chapter , although he sincerely hoped that any vein of humour that he possessed would not to be dried up during his year . The ancient fable of " The Hares and the Hedgehog" was alluded to a year ago by Comp . Burgess , who represented htm ( the M . E . Z . ) as scooting through the green fields of Masonry and leaping the hedges
ot decorum with a jubilant frivolity , thus leaving the unfortunate hedgehog hopelessly plodding behind . It was far otherwise , and the time had arrived when he must raise the curtain upon the last act of this emblematic fable . He was that halting , slow , and sorely handicapped hedgehog , and some of the hares who rushed past him in the pride of their strength and their swiftness were now enthroned on his left in all the pomp of the imperial purple . He had now the supreme reward of long-suffering patience , and in that position would endeavour to support the prestige and supremacy of the chapter , cairy on its traditions , and work and maintain its splendour and usefulness .
" The H . and J . " was the next toast , given by the M . E . Z ., who thanked Comp . Burgess , P . Z ., for kindly acting as H ., and congratulated the chapter on having such an enthusiastic worker as Comp . Whitford to fill the chair of J . Comp . T . Whitford , J ., briefly responded . The M . E . Z . then proposed "The l . P . Z . and Installing Principals . " Referring to Comp . Welsford , l . P . Z ., he said that no companion took a keener interest in Royal
Arch Masonry and no member had worked harder for the chapter . It was , therefore , a pleasure to he installed by him that evening . The handsome jewel presented to the l . P . Z . they hoped he would live long to wear . Comp . Burgess , P . Z ., was widely known in Freemasonry and was M . E . Z . of no less than five chapters . He was a most genial and kindly hearted Mason and his installation of the J . that evening had been done in a most impressive manner .
Comp . Welsford , l . P . Z ., expressed his thanks , and also his pleasure at being able to instal his old friend as M . E . Z . He thought the chapter was to be congratulated on its position . Comp . C . O . Burgess , P . Z ., shared the regret of the M . E . Z . at the absence of the H . elect , Comp . Moggridge . With such a popular M . E . Z . they could look forward with pleasurable anticipation to a continued success for the chapter .

Z ., in reply , said he had since 1890 been trying his hardest to get into that most exalted position , and he had now arrived there , thanks to the unanimous vote of the companions . He trusted they would always find him dignified in the chapter , although he sincerely hoped that any vein of humour that he possessed would not to be dried up during his year . The ancient fable of " The Hares and the Hedgehog" was alluded to a year ago by Comp . Burgess , who represented htm ( the M . E . Z . ) as scooting through the green fields of Masonry and leaping the hedges
ot decorum with a jubilant frivolity , thus leaving the unfortunate hedgehog hopelessly plodding behind . It was far otherwise , and the time had arrived when he must raise the curtain upon the last act of this emblematic fable . He was that halting , slow , and sorely handicapped hedgehog , and some of the hares who rushed past him in the pride of their strength and their swiftness were now enthroned on his left in all the pomp of the imperial purple . He had now the supreme reward of long-suffering patience , and in that position would endeavour to support the prestige and supremacy of the chapter , cairy on its traditions , and work and maintain its splendour and usefulness .
" The H . and J . " was the next toast , given by the M . E . Z ., who thanked Comp . Burgess , P . Z ., for kindly acting as H ., and congratulated the chapter on having such an enthusiastic worker as Comp . Whitford to fill the chair of J . Comp . T . Whitford , J ., briefly responded . The M . E . Z . then proposed "The l . P . Z . and Installing Principals . " Referring to Comp . Welsford , l . P . Z ., he said that no companion took a keener interest in Royal
Arch Masonry and no member had worked harder for the chapter . It was , therefore , a pleasure to he installed by him that evening . The handsome jewel presented to the l . P . Z . they hoped he would live long to wear . Comp . Burgess , P . Z ., was widely known in Freemasonry and was M . E . Z . of no less than five chapters . He was a most genial and kindly hearted Mason and his installation of the J . that evening had been done in a most impressive manner .
Comp . Welsford , l . P . Z ., expressed his thanks , and also his pleasure at being able to instal his old friend as M . E . Z . He thought the chapter was to be congratulated on its position . Comp . C . O . Burgess , P . Z ., shared the regret of the M . E . Z . at the absence of the H . elect , Comp . Moggridge . With such a popular M . E . Z . they could look forward with pleasurable anticipation to a continued success for the chapter .
" The Exaltees and Joining Members " was next given and responded to . "The Visitors " was acknowledged by Comps . Sparrow and Robinson . " The Treasurer and Scribe K . and P . Zs . " and " The Officers , " were the concluding toasts of a very successful and enjoyable meeting . Comp . Stewart Walker , Org ., was assisted in the musical arrangements by Bros . Barwell , Borden , Harris , and others .
