Comp . Henochsberg , I . P . Z ., thanked the M . E . Z . and companions very

sincerely for this mark of their appreciation and regard . There was no need for him to assure them of the interest he had always taken , and would take , in the welfare of their chapter . He was pleased to see it in such a prosperous condition , and again thanked them for their gift . The M . E . Z . then said he thought it was their duty to pass a

vote ot thanks to the G . S . E . for his kindness in attending , at considerable personal inconvenience , to instal the Principals . Comp . Col . Clerke always gave his time in a ready and willing manner to enhance the affairs of the Order , and the least they could therefore do was to record on their minutes a cordial vote of thanks to him for the honour he

large number of lodges and chapters in London which Comp . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke visited during the year , the companious might think it was invidious on the G . S . E . ' s part to single out a small chapter like theirs for a visit . He had no doubt , however , that the G . S . E . was convinced that the members of the Israel Chapter were striving to attain a position in Masonry , and that was the

reason of his visit . He would ask them to rise , and in drinking to the health of the Grand Officers they would drink more especially to the health of the G . S . E ., wishing him long life and thanking him for his presence . Comp . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , G . S . E ., said he rose at once to thank the M . E . Z and cjmpanionsin his own name , and on behalf of his distinguished colleagues present , for

the kind way in which they had received the toast of the rulers of the Order . It was an important toast , for it comprised the Earl of Carnarvon , Lord Lathom , and Lord Leigh , and a large number of other distinguished Masons who hold high office in Royal Arch Masonry and who exert their best endeavours to further the progress of the Order . They were very fortunate in having a large number of

noblemen and others who devoted their time to the Order , and this to a great extent accounted for the fact that Royal Arch Masonry was flourishing in a most wonderful manner . He could recall the time , but a few years ago , when it was in a languishing state . and when brethren who wished to be exalted had to search , and had considerable difficulty in finding , a chapter suitable to their requirements . All that was now

changed , and he thought that any fairly prosperous lodge might at the present time have a chapter connected with it , especially as the expense was not so great as in the Craft . When a lodge had a chapter attached to it the companions received the members of the lodge into it , and thus they were the same united family . He thought , therefore , that it was a creditable thing for any fairly large lodge to have

a chapter in connection with it , and he was pleased to assure them that at the present day R . A . Masonry was flourishing to a very large extent . He was happy to be with the companions again in the Israel Chapter , but he was somewhat late in attending owing to the business at the Board of General Purposes . He was pleased to be with them aeain , as he consecrated the chapter two years

ago , and installed Comp . Hogard , whom he was very pleased to see made a Grand Officer , as the first M . E . Z . Since its consecration it had progressed , and now numbered many excellent and good men as members , which accounted for it being a well-conducted chapter . It had been wisely governed , and he was sure that in the future that government would be carried on as efficiently and effectually as in the past . He heartily congratulated the

companions on the success of their chapter , and trusted that success would continue . He thanked them for the kind and fraternal way in which they had recognised the presence of himself and colleagues that evening . Comp . Henochsberg , I . P . Z ., said he had much pleasure in rising to propose a toast which would be received most enthusiastically . It was " The Health of Comp . Jos Da

Silva , M . E . Z . " He , for one , was pleased to see Comp . Da Silva installed into the proud position of M . E . Z ., and he was sure the members had done wisely in electing that companion to preside over them . They knew that the M . E . Z . was an excellent Freemason , and also were aware of the great interest he took in connection with the lodge and chapter . They would not forget how hard Comp . Da Silva

worked originally for the formation of the chapter , and he had well earned his present proud position . In his hands the chapter would lose none of its lustre , for he would prove a first-rate First Principal , especially if the companions extended to him the support they had hitherto given to the occupant of the first chair . The companions present would join in wishing him asuccessful year of office , and health

and happiness to enjoy his position . Comp . Jos Da Silva , M . E . Z ., returned hearty thanks for the kind way in which his health had been given and received . He said that the success of his year would depend , to a great extent , 011 his own ability to carry out the duties assigned to him , but success would more especially depend upon the amount of support he received from the members .

He must ask them all to give him the same support they had so kindly given to his predecessors—support not only by their attendance and attention , but also in providing material for him to act on during the time he occupied the chair of M . E . Z . He trusted they would bring as many candidates into the chapter as possible , for it was necessary to have new blood continually infused into it . He hoped

that when he retired from the chair he would be able to thank them for fulfilling that which he had asked from them , and that he would be able to congratulate them upon the addition to their numbers of several exaltees . " The Visitors " having been given by the M . E . Z ., Comp . J . C . Hayes , P . Z . 142 , returned sincere thanks for the kind and profuse hospitality received , eulogised the

admirable working he had seen , and congratulated the members on the flourishing position of the chapter . "The H . and J . " was next given , in response to which Comp . Phillips , H ., heartily thanked the M . E . Z . and companions for their kind reception accorded the toast , and assured them that the H . and J . would do their best to promote the welfare of the chapter during the forthcoming

year . Comp . Bash having appropriately replied to the toast of "The Exaltee , " the M . E . Z . gave "The P . Z . 's . " Comp . C . F . Hogard , P . Z ., P . D . G . D . C , said he was very much obliged for the kind way in which the toast had been introduced and received . The M . E . Z . had said that the P . Z . ' s were not numerous , but , considering that the

chapter was only entering on the second year of its existence , it would be a paradox if they were . They had endeavoured to do the best they could for the interests of the chapter , and he was sure that if in time they were called upon to assist in the working they would place their services at the disposal of the companions . There did not , however , seem a possibility of that , as every officer had performed his

duty in a smooth and perfect manner , that was a treat to see . It was not often in a chapter that all were so perfect , but when they remembered that the officers in the Israel Lodge were so perfect , it would have been extraordinary if the companions coming from the mother lodg-e were not able to dischargetheirdutiesin a creditable manner . Comp . Hayes ,

who responded for the visitors , thought he ( Comp . Hogard ) might do a little more for Chapter No . 142 ; but they would remember that the Israel Chapter had a strong lodge at its back , and all the companions came from that lodge , as in duty bound . He considered that if a brother wished to take the Royal Arch Degree it devolved upon him to join the chapter attached to his own lodge . He was proud to see

their chapter had received such a large amount of support from the Israel Lodge , and he hoped that support would continue . There had been three members proposed for exaltation that evening , and he felt that the young members coming on in the lodge could not do better than join their chapter . Comp . Henochsberg , I . P . Z ., said that after thespeech of

Comp . Hogard there was little for him to say , for that companion had entirely expressed his views ; but being the only other P . Z . it would be ungracious on his part , especially after receiving so handsome a testimonial , if he did not say a few words . He felt highly honoured at having received at their hBnds the very handsome P . Z . ' s jewel presented to him in

the chapter by the M . E . Z . The humble services he had rendered had given him great pleasure , and he could assure them that if he could do anything to further the interests of the Israel Chapter , his services were at their command . "Ihe Officers" having been given , the Janitor's toast closed the proceedings .

KENNINGTON CHAPTER ( No . 1381 ) . —This flourishing transpontine chapter met at the Horns Tavern , Kennington Park , on the 9 th instant . Among those in attendance were Comps . Ayling , P . Davis , 1381 , was most impressively exalted to the Degree of the R . A ., the M . E . Z . ' s address and lecture being exceptionably good . Comp . H . J . Lardner was elected as M . E . Z . for the ensuing year , and

at the next meeting . A proposition for exaltation having been handed in for ballot at the next convocation , the chapter was closed , and the companions adjourned to the banquet . The long list of toasts received due honour . Comp . G . Everett , in a few well chosen sentences , proposed "The Health of the M . E . Z ., " whose year of office

had been so prosperous . He was of opinion that few , if any , First Principals could surpass Comp . Ayling's general working . In conclusion , he wished that in the future the chapter would be as well officered as it was at present . The M . E . Z . having replied , gave the toast next in

succession . In giving "The Treasurer and S . E ., " he particularly expressed the great obligations he was under to those two worthy companions , by whose aid his year had been so happy and prosperous . Comps . Everett and Higgins having briefly replied , the proceedings terminated .

GUERNSEY . —Loyalty Chapter ( No . 243 ) . —A special convocation of this chapter was held on the 9 th inst ., at the Masonic Temple , Le Marchant-street , when there were present Comps . A . C . guineas , instead of three as at present . " Bros . William Thorn , P . M . 168 , and P . Comp . Le Page gave the mystical lecture admirably , and greatly impressed the candidates with the mysterious beauty of this Degree . The usual pleasant little supper followed , and Comp . Thorn , in responding for the toast of " The Candidates , "

said that he had long meditated taking this Degree , and he now felt very glad he had done so . He should never forget the ceremony and was very much struck with the mystical lecture as given by Comp . Le Page . We prophesy a new era of prosperity to the chapter now the fees have been wisely lowered .

Tudor Chapter on many previous occasions , and especially for the faultless and impressive manner in which he had installed the Principals in their respective chairs that evening , and that such vote be recorded in the minutes of the chapter . " Comp . Greaves seconded the proposition , which was carried with acclamation .
