[ We do not hold ourselves responsible for , or even approving of the opinions expressed by our correspondents , but we wish in a spirit of fair play to all to permit—withi- certain necessary limits—free discussion . ] ——EARLY MASONRY IN CHESHIRE . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Through the courtesy of Bro . J . C . Robinson , of Chester , I am enabled to furnish the date of Constitution of the S * an Lodge at Neston , No . 457 , of 1769 . The Chester Courant of Tuesday , 24 th January , 1769 , contains the following : "On Tuesday last [ 17 I 1 January ]
the Provincial Grand Master , his Deputy and Wardens of the Most Ancient and Honourable Society of Free and Accepted Masons assembled at the Star Inn , in Watergatestreet , in this city , where they Constituted a Lodge ( under his Grace the Duke of Beaufort , Grand Master ) to be held at the Swan , in Great Neston , near Parkgate ; and which 'tis hoped by that Ancient and Honourable Fraternity will
be a means of reforming many abuses lately practised on the aforesaid Society for want of a regular constituted and well governed lodge . " The latter sentence may have reference to the working of the " Ancient" or "Athol" Lodge , No . 41 , warranted 19 th December , 1758 , ( 0 meet at the "Ship-in-Launch at Park Gate , " distant only about half a mile from Neston , but the curious fact in the above extract is that the
ceremony of constitution was formed in a town other than that in which the lodge was intended to meet . With the exception of the "Soulh Australian Lodge of Friendship , " No . 613 , of 22 nd October , 1834 , which was " opened at No . 7 , John-street , Adelphi , London" [ vida " Masonic Records , " p . 1 S 8 , ] I am not aware of another instance of this kind .
