He hoped they would sustain that reputation by doubling the subscrip tions they intended giving , and follow the lead ot their VV . M ., who had contributed five guineas to his list . He coup led with the toast the name of Bro . John Mason , Institution

who represented the Royal Masonic Benevolent . Bro . John Mason , P . P . G . D . Middlesex , in reply , said he trusted they would believe him when he said he approached the subject with mingled feelings of regret and pleasure . He regretted he was not in time to see the lodge working ; but he remembered that at his last . visit , he attended the to the had

lodge working , but could not stay banquet . He found that the place of duty was the place of safety , for he had to attend the final meeting of the Stewards that day and could not attend their lodge earlier . The Benevolent Institution had great difficulties to contend with , because of that celebrated event—the Centenary of the

Girls' School . He thought it was a proud and happy thing that the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls had braved the storm for 100 years , and had rendered such valuable suit and service to the Craft . There were great expectations concerning that Festival , and he feared that the Institution he represented would suffer from their success . Last year

the Benevolent Institution had a good Festival , and they took on 25 additional annuitants , which meant an additional number as long as it was an Institution . There were 130 candidates seeking admission , all of whose claims had to be thoroughly sifted , and many went up time after time before they were successful . The I . P . M . had a very capable colleague in Bro . Gillingnam to represent the lodge

with him , and he hoped they would be sent up with a good list . He hoped the members would not forget their obligation , but would give according as they had been blessed . Other toasts followed , and the proceedings were brought to a close by the Tyler's toast . Bro . Spurr kindly officiated at the pianoforte , and enhanced the enjoyment of the brethren by his musical abilities .

the following inscription : " Presented by the brethren of Square and Compass Lodge , No . 1336 , to Brother J . A . Harris , W . M . 1887 . " The brethren , to the number of about 70 , subsequently sat down to a sumptuous banquet at the Wynnstay Arms , served in the best style of that well known hostelry . The catering gave the highest satisfaction .

In all no less than 49 signed—the largest attendance ever known at an emergency meeting . This was the first meeting after the installation of the W . M ., and , as he had a perfect " glut" of work , there was a great attraction for

those who knew his proficiency . The first business was to pass Bros . Knowles and Robinson , which was done separately . Then Bro . Thurgar was raised , after which , the ballot having been taken for Messrs . F . Mills , jun ., E . Burall , J : H . Mayhew , W , Lancastei , and W . Townsend , and proving satisfactory , the ceremony of initiation was proceeded with . Mr . Mayhew was unable to attend through

indisposition , but the others , being at hand , were initiated . The working of each officer was as well nigh perfect as could be , and the neophytes seemed to be most deeply impressed . Mention was made of the approaching Festival , and , though no vote could be made at this meeting , it was generally agreed that five guineas should be given to each of the three Institutions . It was said by Bro . Laurence

that through the agency of the BenevoIent ; Club no less than 600 guineas had been subscribed to the Charities within the last eight years . Bro . Bultz represents this lodge at the Girls' Festival , and expects to have at least £ 35 on his list . Bro . Doyle , 145 , was elected a joining member at the last

meeting , and he took the opportunity at this meeting to thank the brethren for the kind reception they had given him , and said he should be pleased to show his appreciation in a practical way by putting £ 5 on the list of the Steward who would represent this lodge at the Boys' Festival . Bro . Doyle ' s liberality was acknowledged by the

W . M . All business being ended , the brethren partook of supper , at which—being Ash Wednesday—fish formed the staple article . Mrs . Frayling never has pleased the brethren more than at this repast . A most enjoyable evening was spent ,

musical talent being plentiful in this lodge . Ample testimony was paid by the visitors to the excellent working which had been exhibited . As there are still three candidates for admission , the W . M . intends to call another emergency in April .

' s jewel was voted to the W . M ., as well as a souvenir of his Mastership to his amiable wife , Mrs . Ockenden . Bros . Chandler , P . M ., and Masters were nominated for Provincial Grand honours .

The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to refreshment . The customary toasts followed . " The Health of the W . M . " waas warmly proposed by Bro . Featherstone . The VV . M ., in reply , thanked the brethren for the great consideration and kindness that they had shown him during his career in the lodge . He ( the W . M . ) was deeply touched

with the remarks that had fallen from the Treasurer as well as the Senior Warden that night , especially those expressions relating to his wife . He hoped to be spared many years to wear the jewel they had so kindly voted to him that evening , and he trusted that No . 1656 would flourish root and branch for ever . The W . M . then gave "The W . M . elect . " In the course of a long and eloquent

speech he congratulated the lodge upon electing a brother who ,-in the dual capacities of founder and officer , had for a long period of 11 years rendered himself by his services in every way worthy of the honour accorded to him . Bro . Walls having acknowledged the compliment , the toasts of "The Visitors , " " Past Masters , " "Treasurer , " "Secretary , " and "The Officers" terminated the proceedings .

the Benevolent Institution had a good Festival , and they took on 25 additional annuitants , which meant an additional number as long as it was an Institution .
