In connection with the approaching 103 rd Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , at which the Prov . Grand Master of Hampshire and the Isle tf Wight is to preside , a banquet was held at the South-Western Hotel , Southampton , on Thursday night , the iCth instant , which was attended by over 100 brethren , representing the six lodges in the Southampton district . Bro .
G . J . Tilling , P . G . D . Eng ., presided , and the vice-chairs were occupied by Bros . Bagshaw , W . M . 130 ; Lovell Stevens , W . M . 359 ; W . J . Berry , W . M . 394 S . Cooksey , P . M . ni 2 j J . Methven , P . M . and Sec . 1461 ; and R . W . Denness , P . M ., 1 / 80 . The guests of the evening were Bros . E . Goble , P . G . S . B . Eng ., Dep Prov . G . Master , and J . M . Dinner over , the CHAIKMAN proposed "The King and the Craft , " which was followed by other Masonic toasts , the Chairman responding for Grand Lodge Oflicers , Bros . Goble and McLeod also rising .
The I ist-named proposed " The Prov . G . Master , the Dep . Prov . G . Master , and the rest of the Prov . G . Officers , Present and Past , " specially rererring to the hig h esteem in which the Prov . G . Master , Bro . Beach , was held by Masons everywhere , and urging that the brethren of his province should mike the coming Festival a record in the career of the Prov . G . Master . The D . P . G . M ., with whom rose several Past and Present Provincial Grand
Officers , responded , and cordially endorsed the remarks of Bro . McLeod concerning the P . G . M ., and then congratulated the promoters of that gathering on the success which had attended their effort , which he hoped would result in a banquet in aid of the great Masonic Charities being held annually in Southampton , and that the example set that night would be followed by other towns in the province .
Bro . LEMON proposed " The Masonic Charities , " and said thit gathering was unique in the history of Southampton Freemasonry , and he , too , hoped it would be made an annual affair .
Bro . MCLEOD made an eloquent response , in which he dwelt more particularly upon the Institution with which he is immediately connected , referring to the excellent training the boys received , and to the educational successes they gained in examinations .. He further stated that 13 lads from the Province of Himpshire and the Lie of Wight were being educated in the Schools . He congratulated the Southampton brethren on the success of that gathering , and particularly commended Bros . H . Lashmore and H . Bites for their effort * in the affiir .
A feature of the evening , which excited great interest , was a ballot for lifevotes for the School , and an " auction " by Bro . M . rdattd lhe difficulties experienced by his relatives , from as earlyasso years ago , in attaining to the chair of K . S ., owing to the management of the house in which the lodge was held being in their hands , and tojk the opportunity of thinking ths Grand Lodge for their dispensation allowing him to take thc chair , and those brethren who had induced the Grind Lodge to grant the dispsnsitbn .
At the conclu'bn of fis response , the W . M . presented the lodge with a handsome and artistically embroidered tinner . The W . M . then proposed " Tne He alih of the Immediate Past Master and Installing Master . " Theyall apprec ' uted Br o . Woodward at his true value , and for himself he felt that his work in th : I idge would be judged by the high standard set up by his predecessor .
