honoured chief , The Deputy Grand Master had honoured them by visiting the Iodge that night , and the Grand Officers present were but samples of the bulk . What they had done in the past they would do in the future to increase the prosperity of the Mark Degree . The Worshipful Master next made touching allusion to the recent death of Bro . Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., Prov .
G . M . Middx . and Surrey , and proposed " The Health of the Deputy Prov . G . M ., and Prov . G . Officers . " Bro . John Barnett , P . P . G . M . O ., said it was difficult at all times to reply to that toast , 'but on the present occasion the difficulty was increased , as they were now mourning the loss of their Prov . Grand Master , who bad presided for 21 vears , but his memory would be ever green and dear to
those who had sat under his rule . He was delighted to see Bro . Shurmur occupying the chair , and whilst congratulating him he felt certain he might congratulate the members on having such an energetic Mason at their head . Bro . P . F . Portway , I . P . M ., in proposing "TheW . M ., " said that most of the members were better acquainted with Bro . Shurmur ' s many virtues and sterling qualities than he
was . No remarks were necessary , but would rather detract from the toast , all knowing and appreciating the VV . M . so well . The old members of the lodge were pleased to see Bro . Shurmur ' s year commenced so auspiciously by the addition of a number of brethren whom he had introduced , and who would add to the strength and stability of the lodge .
Bro . Wm . Shurmur , W . M ., said he was exceedingly grateful to the brethren for their cordial reception , and he thanked the I . P . M . very much for the truly fraternal and complimentary manner in which he had proposed the toast . It was very gratifying to be surrounded by so many friends who had honoured him with their presence , and he knew they would join with him in endeavouring to place the lodge
upon more prosperous lines . He hoped that at the end of his year of office he might have proved himself not altogether unworthy of the great compliment paid him in unanimously electing him as W . M . He thanked them sincerely . " The Advancees and Joining Members" having been honoured , " The Visitors" was cordially given , and the
visiting brethren heartily welcomed . Bro . Capt . E . M . Money , P . G . Stwd ., said it had been an honour and pleasure to those visitors who had assisted in the work that evening . It was also a great satisfaction to see the welcome addition of strength to the numbers . He congratulated the W . M . on that addition , for it would be a great calamity to Mark Masonry if a lodge of that character
was to drop out . Bro . C . F . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br ., expressed the pleasure it afforded him to see Bro . Shurmur installed by the Grand Secretary , and from the manner in which the W . SUMMER BANQUET OF THE BRITISH LODGE , No . 8 .
The brethren of the above lodge held their summer banquet on Monday , the 20 th instant , at the Star and Garter Hotel , Richmond , when , in accordance with custom , members had the privilege of inviting a guest
outside the Craft , the observances being in accordance therewith . Bro . Edward E . Cooper , VV . M ., presided over the company , which fell but just short of 40 , with his Wardens as " Vice-Presidents . " Though the weather was not so propitious as could have been desired , the
view from the dining room was one not easily to be forgotten . Bro . Antonio Mella , the worthy host , in conversation with some of the visitors , made the remark that , though he was born on the border of Lake Como , the scenery around which is so highly praised , he was bound to confess that it by no means surpassed the grand view seen from the far-famed house he now
controls . An elegant banquet was served under Bro . Mella ' s own supervision , and it must have pleased Mons . Lanson , who was by accident a guest , to notice the appreciation bestowed upon that very pretty wine which bears the brand of Lanson Pere et Fils . A hi gh
compliment was paid to that gentleman by the President in calling upon him to respond with Bro . Germain for " The Visitors . " The pleasure of the evening was very materially enhanced by the exquisite singing of Bros . Schartau , Bradford , Dalzell , and C . T . Johnson .

SUMMER BANQUET OF THE BRITISH LODGE , No . 8 .

outside the Craft , the observances being in accordance therewith . Bro .
T . Johnson .
