MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS .

On Saturday last the Lord Mayor of Dublin unveiled the bronze statue which has been erected by the citizens in St . Stephen ' s Green Park to commemorate the services rendered by Lord Ardilaun to the Irish capital . The anniversary festival of the Royal Blind Pension Society was held on Saturday evening last under the presidency of Viscount Portman , the subscriptions in the course of the evening being announced as amounting to £ 1030 .

It has been announced that the Queen ' s visit to the camp at Aldershot to lay the foundation-stone of the new church and review the troops will take place on Monday next , the 27 th inst ., and not on Wednesday , the 29 th , as originally supposed .

The Sunday Society held its annual meeting on Saturday last at St . Martin's Town Hall , under the presidency of Bro . Lord Brassey . The report showed that in 33 towns in the United Kingdom and three Metropolitan districts art galleries and museums were opened to the public .

A large number of present and past Etonians attended the consecration at Hackney Wick , on Saturday morning last , by the Bishop of London , of a new church , which has been erected by the Eton College Mission and its friends and supporters , at a cost of upwards of ^ Sooo .

The Lords of the Admiralty have ordered a sum of money to be expended annually for the purpose of keeping in proper order the burial place near Chatham Dockyard in which the remains of the French prisoners which were discovered during the progress of the extension works were re-interred .

The Duke of Cambridge dined with the Austrian Ambassador and the Countess Deym at the Embassy in Belgrave-square on Tuesday , the Russian Ambassador and Madame de Staal , Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Portland , the Earl and Countess of Brownlow , and the Earl of Ilchester being among the guests invited to meet his Royal Highness .

Two out of the five persons killed in the recent collision at the Esholt Junction on the Midland Railway were insured in the Accident Insurance Company ( Limited ) . One , Mr . Joseph Allen , of Halifax , for £ 1000 ; and the other , Mr . Sydney R . Smith , for £ 500 . Monday was the 55 th anniversary of her Majesty ' s accession to the throne . There are only two English sovereigns who have reigned longer than the Oueen—Henry III ., who reigned 5 6 years , and her grandfather , George III ., who reigned close on 60 years , but the former of these monarchs was a minor when he succeeded his father John , while George III . ' s son , afterwards George IV ., was Regent for the last nine years of his father ' s life .

The Corps of Commissionaires , to the number of 1930 , § araded in the grounds of the Royal Hospital , Chelsea , on unday morning last , for the purpose of being inspected by the Duke of Connaught . His Royal Highness , after privately inspecting the men , who were drawn up in line in open order , addressed some words of congratulation to the corps , after which an open-air service was held by the Rev Armstrong Hall , but unfortunately this was cut short by a heavy downpour of rain .

Hospital Sunday was kept in nearly all the London churches and chapels on Sunday last . At St . Paul ' s Cathedral , which was attended in the afternoon by Bro . Lord Mayor Evans , the Sheriffs , and many members of the Corporation , as well as the Lord Chancellor ( Bro . Lord Halsbury ) and other of her Majesty's Judges , the collection amounted to close on £ 215 , while at Westminster Abbey , which the Civic dignitaries attended in the morning , it reached £ 230 , and at the Temple Church £ 197 .

The Prince of Wales and the Duke of York , who have been staying at Warwick Castle as the guests of the Earl of Warwick , visited the Royal Agricultural Show early on Tuesday . Their Royal Highnesses were accompanied by their noble host and Bro . Lord and Lady Brooke , and met

with a most cordial reception . Later in the day they attended the horse parade with Prince Christian , who , at the meeting of the members in the Show-yard , moved a vote of thanks to the Mayor and Corporation of Warwick for their hearty welcome to the Society , a similar vote being passed to the Earl of Warwick for the use of his park for the Show .

A special meeting of the Lodge of Edinburgh ( Mary ' s Chapel ) , No . 1 , was held on the 14 th instant in the Freemasons' Hall , George-street , Edinburgh , for the purpose of conferring honorary membership on Bro . Wallace Bruce , United States Consul , Edinburgh . There was a large attendance of the brethren of the lodge , including the R . W . M ., Bro . Dr . George Dickson , who presided ; Bros .

Muirhead , P . M . ; Gilbert Macdonald , P . M . ; J . H . Bell , D . M . ; P . L . Henderson , S . W . ; Lewis , Treas . ; and J . A . Trevelyan Sturrock , Sec . Bro . Wallace Bruce was received in the usual form , and was made an honorary member of the lodge in consideration of the distinguished

position he holds in Scotland , his enthusiasm for Scottish things in general , and as a link in the Masonic relations between this country and the United States . An ode was also recited by one of the brethren in honour of the occasion . Bro . Wallace Bruce , in reply , thanked them warmly for the honour they had done him .

Tattersall , we omitted to note that he was one of the founders and an energetic member of the Anglo-American Lodge . The management of the Empire Theatre announce that they have engaged Bro . Arthur Roberts , who will make his

first appearance on Monday next , the 27 th inst . In our report of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Norths and Hunts last week , Bro . E . Solomon was described as of Lodge 442 . It should have been Lodge Socrates , No . 373 . There was a large attendance at Christie ' s on Saturday afternoon last , when a large collection of pictures and old silver plate was brought to the hammer . The prices realised by the latter ranged from 34 s . to 142 s . per ounce .

On Saturday last Bro . J . Blundell Maple , M . P ., opened a Free Library for Penge , intended only for temporary use , and located in the Station-road , Anerley . The income at the penny rate will be about £ 530 per annum . The Duchess of Edinburgh , accompanied . by her daughters , the Princesses Marie and Victoria , arrived in London from the Continent on Tuesday evening . They were met at Charing Cross station by the Duke , and at once drove to Clarence House .

The Duke of Cambridge presided on Wednesday evening at the annual dinner of the Staff College , held at the Hotel Metropole . His Royal Highness was supported on his right by General Napier , and on his left by General Archibald Alison .

The remains of the Earl of Ancrum were buried on Wednesday with military honours . The Earl of Jersey , the Admiral in command of the Australian Squadron , and several Ministers were present at the funeral . The body will be eventually taken to England . The Princess Louise , Marchioness of Lome , accompanied by the Marquis of Lome , visited Broadstairs on Tuesday

for the purpose of opening the Victoria Hospital for Children at Broadstairs , which was thronged with visitors from all parts in honour of the occasion . Saturday last being the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo , Speech Day was held at Wellington College , at which there present , among others , the Dukeof Connaught ,

the Duke of Cambridge , Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein , and the Archbishop of Canterbury . The Queen , accompanied by the Princess Beatrice and attended by the ladies and gentlemen of the Court , left Balmoral Castle on Tuesday afternoon , and driving to Ballater , where the Royal train was in waiting , reached Windsor Castle in safety early on We inesday morning .

A summer picnic in connection with The Abbey Lodge , Westminster , has been arranged for , and the date fixed is Friday , July 15 th . A trip b y rail to Windsor , thence by electric launch up the river , with the privilege of inviting three guests , is certainly a very attractive programme . Bros . J . E . Shand and H . E . A Rose Show at the Mansion House in aid of the Royal Hospital for Women and Children , Waterloo-road , will be opened by the Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein today ( Friday ) . The Princess will be accompanied by her daughter , the Princess Victoria , and the Prince of Wales has kindly promised to contribute some roses from Sandringham to the Lady Mayoress ' s stall .

The Duke of Edinburgh Lodge has removed from the Cape of Good Hope Tavern , Commercial-road , to the Eastern Hotel Tavern , Commercial-road , Limehouse . Its meetings are held on the first Tuesdays in February , March , April , May , October , November , and December . Lodge of instruction meetings are held every Thursday evening at 7 . 30 p . m ., at the Eastern Hotel , Commercial-road , Limehouse .

On Friday , the 17 th instant , upwards of a dozen representatives of St . Kew Lodge , No . 1222 , Weston-super-Mare , accepted an invitation from the members ot the Rural Philanthropic Lodge , Highbridge , to pay a return visit and partake of hospitalities . The business of a lodge of emergency having been promptly despatched at Highbridge , an adjournment was made to Burnham , and at the

Queen ' s Hotel a recherche banquet was partaken of under fiie presidency of the W . M . of the Rural Philanthropic Lodge , Bro . J . B . Sincock . The Duke of York took his seat in the House of Lords on the afternoon of Friday , the 17 th instant . His Royal Highness was introduced by his father , the Prince of Wales , and his uncle , the Duke of Connaught . On arriving at the

Woolsack his Royal Highness presented his patent to the Lord Chancellor ( Bro . Lord Halsbury ) , and subsequently took the oath and subscribed the roll . On Saturday last , the iSth inst ., the 300 th performance of "Venice , the Bride of the Sea , " was given at Olympia . Bro . James M . Scarlett , Tailor , of 193 , Upper-street , Islington , has opened a branch establishment at u , Long , lane , Smithfield . The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh , . with Princess Marie and the Crown Prince of Roumania , visited the Royal Opera House , Covent Garden , on Wednesday evening .

A meeting of the Gresham University Commission was held on Wednesday at 23 , Great George-street , West , minster , Earl Cowper in the chair . Dr . W . J . Russell , Principal of Bedford College for Ladies , Professor Heath , and Mrs . Bryant , of the same College , were examined . The soiree of the Royal Institute of British Architects

was held on Wednesday evening in the South Kensington Museum . The reception was by the President and Mrs . MacVicar Anderson . The musical entertainments were by the string band of the Royal Artillery , the Royal Handbell Ringers , and Mr . Miller ' s Canadian Sleigh Bells .

The Countess of Ilchester gave a garden party at Holland House on Wednesday afternoon , at which a brilliant company , numbering about 1500 assembled . The Duke of Aosta , with the Italian Ambassador , and attended by his Aides de Camp , was among the early arrivals ; and the Maharaja Gaekwar of Baroda was also present .

On Wednesday Bro . the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were present at the garden party given by Col . and ex-Sheriff Thomas Clarke and Mrs . Clarke , at their residence , The Gables , Upper Hamilton-terrace . There were also present Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , P . G . D ., and many of the Officers of Grand Lodge .

Bro . Lord Brassey has given ^ 5000 towards the provision of a block of buildings to consist of a missions to seamen church , an institute , a gymnasium , an adult school room , class rooms , and a coffee bar , & c , for the free use of sailors and fishermen of all nationalities frequenting the port of London , which , with four other seamen ' s institutes , is to cost £ 30 , 000 .

The Royal Colonial Institute held their annual soiree on Wednesday evening in the hall and galleries of the new Natural History Museum . The company was received in the absence of the President , the Prince of Wales , by the Vice-Presidents and members of the Council . There was a very large attendance , and the band of the Coldstream Guards and Miss Graves' Ladies Orchestra performed musical selections .

To-day ( Friday ) , being Midsummer Day , the livery of London will meet in Common Hall at Guildhall to exercise their privilege of electing Sheriffs of the City of London for the year ensuing . The two senior Aldermen who have not served the office—Bro . Alderman Renals and Mr . Alderman Wilkin—will , it is expected , enjoy the good fortune of being elected unanimously by the livery .

Mr . Henry E . Abbey has just completed arrangements with Bro . Henry Irving to play a tour of 30 weeks in the United Statesjunder his direction , commencing in San Fransisco in September , 1 S 93 . During this tour Bro . Irving will , with Miss Ellen Terry , appear in all the principal cities of America . He will also inaugurate a theatre which Mr . Abbey is building in New York , and will be open in November of that year .

VVednesday being " Grand Day " of Trinity Term at the Inner Temple , the Treasurer , Mr . W . Pearson , Q . C , and the Benchers , entertained the following guests at dinner in the Inner Temple Hall , viz .: Lord Kelvin , Dr . Vaughan ( Master of the lemple ) , Mr . Justice Day , Sir F . Leighton , Sir C . Russell , the Kev . Canon Ainger , the President of the Royal College of Surgeons , the Astronomer Royal , and Mr . Luke Fields .

Lord and Lady Wimborne were honoured by the company of his Royal Highness the Duke of Aosta at dinner on Wednesday evening at Wimborne House . A special meeting of the Lodge of Edinburgh ( Mary ' s Chapel ) , No . 1 , was held on the 14 th instant in the Freemasons' Hall , George-street , Edinburgh , for the purpose of conferring honorary membership on Bro . Muirhead , P . M . ; Gilbert Macdonald , P . M . ; J . H . Bell , D . M . ; P . L . Henderson , S . W . ; Lewis , Treas . ; and J . A . Trevelyan Sturrock , Sec . Bro . Wallace Bruce was received in the usual form , and was made an honorary member of the lodge in consideration of the distinguished

position he holds in Scotland , his enthusiasm for Scottish things in general , and as a link in the Masonic relations between this country and the United States . An ode was also recited by one of the brethren in honour of the occasion . Bro . Wallace Bruce , in reply , thanked them warmly for the honour they had done him .

first appearance on Monday next , the 27 th inst . In our report of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Norths and Hunts last week , Bro . E . Solomon was described as of Lodge 442 . It should have been Lodge Socrates , No . 373 . There was a large attendance at Christie ' s on Saturday afternoon last , when a large collection of pictures and old silver plate was brought to the hammer . The prices realised by the latter ranged from 34 s . to 142 s . per ounce .

On Saturday last Bro . J . Blundell Maple , M . P ., opened a Free Library for Penge , intended only for temporary use , and located in the Station-road , Anerley . The income at the penny rate will be about £ 530 per annum . The Duchess of Edinburgh , accompanied . by her daughters , the Princesses Marie and Victoria , arrived in London from the Continent on Tuesday evening . They were met at Charing Cross station by the Duke , and at once drove to Clarence House .

The Duke of Cambridge presided on Wednesday evening at the annual dinner of the Staff College , held at the Hotel Metropole . His Royal Highness was supported on his right by General Napier , and on his left by General Archibald Alison .

The remains of the Earl of Ancrum were buried on Wednesday with military honours . The Earl of Jersey , the Admiral in command of the Australian Squadron , and several Ministers were present at the funeral . The body will be eventually taken to England . The Princess Louise , Marchioness of Lome , accompanied by the Marquis of Lome , visited Broadstairs on Tuesday

for the purpose of opening the Victoria Hospital for Children at Broadstairs , which was thronged with visitors from all parts in honour of the occasion . The Queen , accompanied by the Princess Beatrice and attended by the ladies and gentlemen of the Court , left Balmoral Castle on Tuesday afternoon , and driving to Ballater , where the Royal train was in waiting , reached Windsor Castle in safety early on We inesday morning .

A summer picnic in connection with The Abbey Lodge , Westminster , has been arranged for , and the date fixed is Friday , July 15 th . A meeting of the Gresham University Commission was held on Wednesday at 23 , Great George-street , West , minster , Earl Cowper in the chair . Dr . W . J . Russell , Principal of Bedford College for Ladies , Professor Heath , and Mrs . Bryant , of the same College , were examined . The soiree of the Royal Institute of British Architects

was held on Wednesday evening in the South Kensington Museum . The reception was by the President and Mrs . MacVicar Anderson . The musical entertainments were by the string band of the Royal Artillery , the Royal Handbell Ringers , and Mr . Miller ' s Canadian Sleigh Bells .

The Countess of Ilchester gave a garden party at Holland House on Wednesday afternoon , at which a brilliant company , numbering about 1500 assembled . The Duke of Aosta , with the Italian Ambassador , and attended by his Aides de Camp , was among the early arrivals ; and the Maharaja Gaekwar of Baroda was also present .

On Wednesday Bro . the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were present at the garden party given by Col . and ex-Sheriff Thomas Clarke and Mrs . Clarke , at their residence , The Gables , Upper Hamilton-terrace . There were also present Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , P . G . D ., and many of the Officers of Grand Lodge .

Bro . Lord Brassey has given ^ 5000 towards the provision of a block of buildings to consist of a missions to seamen church , an institute , a gymnasium , an adult school room , class rooms , and a coffee bar , & c , for the free use of sailors and fishermen of all nationalities frequenting the port of London , which , with four other seamen ' s institutes , is to cost £ 30 , 000 .

The Royal Colonial Institute held their annual soiree on Wednesday evening in the hall and galleries of the new Natural History Museum . The company was received in the absence of the President , the Prince of Wales , by the Vice-Presidents and members of the Council . There was a very large attendance , and the band of the Coldstream Guards and Miss Graves' Ladies Orchestra performed musical selections .

To-day ( Friday ) , being Midsummer Day , the livery of London will meet in Common Hall at Guildhall to exercise their privilege of electing Sheriffs of the City of London for the year ensuing . The two senior Aldermen who have not served the office—Bro . Alderman Renals and Mr . Alderman Wilkin—will , it is expected , enjoy the good fortune of being elected unanimously by the livery .

Mr . Henry E . Abbey has just completed arrangements with Bro . Henry Irving to play a tour of 30 weeks in the United Statesjunder his direction , commencing in San Fransisco in September , 1 S 93 . During this tour Bro . Irving will , with Miss Ellen Terry , appear in all the principal cities of America . He will also inaugurate a theatre which Mr . Abbey is building in New York , and will be open in November of that year .
