One of the most interesting recent discoveries in science is the fact that a ray of light produces sound . A sunbeam is thrown through a lens on a glass vessel which contains lamp-black , coloured silk or worsted , or other substances . A disc having slits or openings cut in it is made to revolve swiftly in this beam of light , so as to cut it up , thus making alternate flashes of light and shadow . On
putting the ear to the glass vessel strange sounds are heard so long as the flashing beam is falling on the vessel . Recently a more wonderful discovery has been made . The beam of sunlight is made to pass through a prism , so as ( o produce what is called the solar spectrum or rainbow . The
disc is turned and the coloured light of the rainbow is made to break through it . Now place ( lie ear to the vessel containing the silk , wool , or other material . As the coloured lights of the spectrum fall upon it , sounds will be given by different parts of the spectrum , and there will be silence in other parts .
We read in our Masonic files that the prospects of the Craft in Mexico are very bright ,- that the funds of the Mexican Grand Lodge are in a flourishing condition , and that much good work is being done in the far-away Republic , notwithstanding the continued opposition of the Jesuit party . Previous to the invasion of the French , and erection of the Empire , there existed in Mexico quite a large
body of Scottish Rite Masonsj but the wholesale assassination of anti-church leaders , by virtue of the infamous decree of Maximilian , putting to death , during his short reign , no less than eleven thousand seven hundred patriots , whose only crime was lighting for national liberty , more
than decimated their ranks . However , after the pacification , Masonic matters took a turn for the better , and the prosperity and unity of the Craft are now accomplished facts . President Diaz , a liberal-minded Mason , is Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Mexico . —NC . D Zealand Mail .

Hanson , De Keyser , Waterlow , Whitehead , Savory , and Cowan , but there is little doubt that the first named , who has done good work already in the City , Will be elected and that his mayoralty will be a success .
A number of landscape painters , including several of high degree , have ( says the Athencenm ) agreed to omit in future from the titles of their exhibited works any names by means of which the exact localities in which they have painted may be identified . ' 1 he cause of this return to the practice of the old artists is the frequent devastation of beautiful sites by tourists and others unqualified to enjoy what they find in nature . It is believed that artists have unwittingly assisted these devastators .
According to a report in the Masonic Journal of Melbourne , a great deal of aclivity has lately been shown by the District Grand Lodge of Tasmania , the District Grand Lodge Officers having been present not only at the installations in lodges in their own jurisdiction , but at those in lodges under the Irish and Scotch constitutions likewise , the Dep . D . G . M . being especially prominent in this respect . At that of the Tasmanian Union Lodge ,
