THE MASONIC DIRECTORY FOR NEW ZEALAND iSSG . We have from time to time reviewed the several Masonic Directories published in England during the present year one only being unnoticed as yet , because not yet issued . As soon , however , as the one for Devon is printed , the series will be complete for this country . We have now a

candidate for our examination from New Zealand , printed and published by Messrs . Bock and Cousins , of Wellington , and we are very pleased to see that the Fraternity in that district has so excellent a pocket companion , "brimming over" with Masonic information . As there are three Grand Lodges represented in New Zealand—England , Ireland and Scotland—the particulars are of considerable

value , respecting the lodges warranted under the several jurisdictions . Auckland , omitting in each case lodges " under dispensation , " has under England , 16 , Ireland , 13 , Scotland , 13 . Total 42 lodges . Wellington has under England 16 lodges . Canterbury has 19 lodges under the same authority , and there are nine lodges hailing from Scotland . Otago and Southland has 12 lodges and 21 lodges

under the English and Scottish Constitutions respectively , and Westland has six lodges under England , there also being five lodges under the same Constitution , not included in any of the District Grand Lodges mentioned . England has thus in New Zealand , 74 , Ireland , 13 , and Scotland , 43 lodges , the total being 130 ; so that between them this handy and well compiled Directory ought to circulate very

freely and prove very useful . The Editor is Bro . George Robertson , S . W . 1521 , who has done his work well , and given all needful particulars of the Craft and other Degrees , of which many are worked , such as the Mark , Arch , Templary and Rose Croix . Other ceremonies also have a footing , and certainly , though at the Anti podes , British Freemasonry is well represented .

677 ] DR . CHALMERS . An Arbroath correspondent had an opportunity recently of getting a peep into the minute book of the Masonic Lodge St . Vigeans , where , under date November 30 , 1 798 , he found recorded that Thomas Chalmers , clergyman had applied b y petition to be admitted an apprentice Mason , and no objection being offered he was duly admitted , and

thereafter adhibited his name to the roll . The above was afterwards the famous Dr . Chalmers , whose name will be handed down to latest ages for his varied accomplishments , to say nothing of his latest and crowning work in 1843 . At the above date he was tutor in Dr . Stcphensan ' s family , Arbroath . Whatever the general character of his

penmanship had been , his signature is clear and business-like . The Th and Cli are prominent , while the small letters are distinctl y continuous and run on . The most of the signatures in the same p 3 ge , as well as in some previous pages , are , caligraphically considered , far superior to an equal number of the present day . COUR 1 R LE PAYS , in Dundee Courier .

The Mayor and Corporation and Bro . Lord Brassey of Bulkeley were among the donors of prizes at the Brighton Regatta on Saturday last .
