"THE FLAGS OK THE WORLD . "—BV F . Edward Hulme , F . L . S ., F . S . A . — ( London : Frederick Warne and Co ., and New York ) . —This is a remarkable volume , brimful of interesting information and " out-of-the-way " facts , and " entertaining as a novel . " Mr . Hulme is master of his subject , and practically exhausts it in the 150 pages , closely-printed and admirably-arranged in octavo size and neatly bound . There are twenty-six plates of illustrations , in appropriate colours , containing 4 6 9 flags of various kinds and Nationalities , the index to these plates and another for the text being so complete as to make the book as easy as possible for purposes of reference . To

brethren who are students of chivalric Masonry the volume is indispensable , and for the still larger circle of readers who wish to understand the meaning of these pretty coloured signs , the work will prove to be a perfect boon , especially as it concerns all Countries and Times , from the standards of antiquity to modern signalling—the banner of the Crusader to the burgee of the yachtsman ; the Royal Standard to the flag of the Congo State ; the Union jack—in all its stages and imitations—to the Blue Blanket of

the Edinburgh craftsmen ; flags of the Army and Navy , national , coIoured , personal , and "the symbols of lost causes , " as well as ensigns , pennants , streamers , pennons , party decorations , and other banners of all kinds and uses . This work , so loaded with good things and which is devoted so thoroughly to flag-lore , is published at 6 s . only , and may be had from the publishers or any of the regular booksellers . There are few books better suited for a present at this season of the year ; but to young people particularly , of either sex , it would be welcome at any time .

After the confirmation of the minutes of previous convocation , the ballot was taken for Bro . J . W . Durrant , and he was duly elected . Bros . G . Ellis and S . Brown—previously elected , and being in attendance—were exalted respectively by Comps . R . Stewart and W . J . Jobson , M . E . Z . Comp . VV . Brown , P . Z ., delivered the mystical lecture to the candidates in an impressive manner . The sums of £ 10 ios . were subsequently voted to the Hudson Benevolent Fund and to the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . The proceedings closed in the usual way .

St . Magdalen Chapter , No , 242 . A regular convocation of this chapter was held on Friday , the 26 th ultimo , in the Masonic Rooms , Doncaster . Present : Comps . C Goldthorpe , M . E . Z . ; A . W . Fretwell , H . j J . Fitzgerald , J . ; F . J . Forth . Treas ; J . Constable , S . E ., P . P . G . O . ; C Boomer , acting S . N . j H . A . Fenton , P . S . ; F . Ranee , P . Z ., P . P . G . Treas . ; S . Pegler , P . Z ., P . P . G . R . ; C . H . Woodhouse , J . H . Pawson , W . Mason , and C Richardson , Janitor . A sum of 10 guineas was voted to the Boys' School , and Comp . J . Constable was appointed Festival Steward .

After other business the chapter was closed , and the companions retired for light refreshment .

Belvedere Chapter , No . 503 . The regular meeting of this chapter was held at the Masonic Hall , Maidstone , on Wednesday , the 24 th inst . The principal chairs were held by Comps . H . M . Apps , M . E . Z . ; L . Sage , P . Z ., as H . ; E . Weller , P . Z ., as J . ; S . Wagon , as S . E . ; T , W . Neech , P . Z ., asS . N . ; E . Wallace , Trews . ; G . W . Head , P . S . ; J . W . Court , ist A . S . ; and C . Bow , 2 nd A . S .

The minutes of the previous convocation having been read and confirmed , Bro . A . W . Court was duly exalted to the Sublime Degree of a Royal Arch Mason . The officers for the ensuing year were elected in the usual way . A P . Z ' s . jewel was unanimously voted to the M . E . Z . for his valuable services during his year of office , this being the first jewel presented in this chapter since its warrant in 1856 . A vote of sympathy with the sufferers of the town with typhoid , and a cheque for £ 5 5 s . was unanimously voted . There being no further business , the chapter was closed .

The monthly meeting of the Board of Benevolence—the last meeting of the Board for the year 1897—was held at Freemasons' Hall , on Wednesday evening when there was a large attendance of the brethren . The brethren first confirmed recommendations made for the Grand Master's approval at the November meeting of the Board to the extent of . £ 670 , and then proceeded wiih the new list which contained the names of 45 petitioners . These were qualified through Lodges in the London District and at Shepton Mallet , Egutpoorah , Cyprus , Dartford , Horsham , Bristol , Wareham , Reading , Shaftesbury , Bury St . Edmunds , Plumstead , Handsworth , Framlingham , Liverpool , Leeds ,

BuenosAjres , Bombay , Newcastle-on-Tyne , Brixham , Launceston , Umballa , Brighouse , and Aston . One of the petitioners had died since the presentation of his petition , one case was deferred , and one dismissed . The remainder were relieved with a total of £ cfio . Two petitioners were recommended to Grand Lodge for , £ 50 each , six were recommended to the Grand Master for £ 40 each , and seven 'or / 30 each . Sixteen grants were made of . £ 20 each , three of ^ 15 each , five of J £ IO each , and three ol £ 5 each . The total for the year was ^ 8835 .

The lodge was opened in due form and the minutes of last mseting read and confirmed . The ceremony of passing was rehearsed , Bro . Cumming being the candidate . The lodge was opened in the Third Degree , and the ceremony of installation was rehearsed—Bro . Raphael , W . M . elect . Investiture of officers was rehearsed , and Bro . Genese , W . M ., acting as Installing Master , gave the three addresses . Bro . Raphael , S . W ., was elected W . M . for the ensuing week and appointed his officers in rotation . The lodge was then closed .

The minutes of the previous convocation were read and confirmed . The ceremony of exaltation was rehearsed , Comp . Frampton personating the candidate . A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Comp . Darham for so ably rehearsing the ceremony of M . E . Z . for the first time . Comp . Snelling was elected M . E . Z . for . the ensuing meeting , and the chapter was then closed .

BRO . SIR F . LOCKWOOD , Q . C , M . P . Bro . Sir Frank Lockwood , Q . C , M . P ., whose death on Sunday last every one is so justly regretting , was a member of the Northern Bar Lodge , No . 1610 , having been initiated in it in 18 79 , and having remained a subscribing member till the time of his decease . He was , however , too busy a man to have concerned himself about office , and , as far as our knowledge goes , remained a simple M . M . during the whole of his membership .

BRO . MAJOR EDWARD J . REED , 2021 , 2671 , 2535 . The sudden death of our late Bro . Reed has caused a void amongst those who were Masonically connected with him , as his amiability and goodness had endeared him to all . On Thursday , the 2 nd instant , he was at business as usual , and attended the Masonic service at St . Paul's ; but next day—Friday—an aneurism and fatty degeneration of the heart ended his earthly career . lie was

an active , zealous Freemason , being a founder of the Fellowship Lodge , of which he was Deacon , and the Victoria Lodge , at Windsor ; a member of the Queen's Westminster Lodge and Chapter , and Secretary of the lodge of instruction attached ; and a member of the Hornsey Chapter of Improvement , the Logic , llyde Park , Westbourne , and other lodges of instruction . He was also a supporter of the Masonic Charities . He was decorated some little time ago with the

Volunteer long-service medal for his services in the iSth Middlesex Volunteer Regiment , As an accountant in the Great Western Railway Company ' s service , he was much esteemed by his fellow officers , and anticipated he would soon be enjoying his well-earned superannuation after many years' service . He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery , the Rev . M . C . Richardson , M . A ., impressively performing the last rites . The chief mourners were his widow and his sons—Edward
