Tyler . The lodge having been closed , the banquet and Festival of St . John was held , at which , as is customary with this lodge , ladies were present . A . W . Reynolds , J . D . At the banquet the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were

duly honoured . In proposing that of "The W . M ., " Bro . Wells said that the enthusiastic manner in which it had been received convinced him that the ladies and brethren were of the same opinion as himself , viz ., that that was the toast of the evening . Bro . Broadbent , although not one of the founders of the lodge , assisted at its constitution , and became one of

the first officers . After referring to the various posts he had filled vvith distinction to himself and advantage to the lodge , Bro . Wells complimented Bro . Broadbent in the most flattering terms on the efficient manner in which he had discharged the duties of S . W . during the past year , and concluded by remarking that an exceptional proof of his ability had been manifested in the lodge whilst investing his officers , which must have convinced the brethren that the prestige of the lodge was in safe hands for the

year . The W . M . responded in feeling terms , and then proposed "The Installing Officer—the I . P . M ., Bro . Wells . " He regretted that a limited vocabulary might prevent him from expressing fully the warm sentiments of his heart , and thereby doing full justice to the toast . He referred to the uniform courtesy and kindness which had been

extended to himself and the brethren generally by Bro . Wells , and characterised his work in the lodge as of the highest order . The efforts of Bro . Wells on behalf of Prince Edward Lodge could never be repaid j it vvould be useless to attempt even to estimate them j they had been simply invaluable . Bro . Broadbent then , amid the cheers of the assembled

guests , presented a handsome Past Master ' s jewel , bearing the following inscription : " Presented by the brethren of Prince Edward Lodge , No . 2109 , to Bro . J . H . Wells , P . M ., in recognition of his valuable services as W . M . 18 S 8 . " Bro . Wells responded in a suitable manner . The toast of "The Past Masters of the Lodge" was

given by Bro . J . Gardner , S . D ., in responding to which Bro . W . Webster , P . M ., P . G . Steward , said that the P . M . ' s had always shown the deepest concern in matters relating to the well-being of the lodge . They had the laudable ambition to make the history of Prince Edward Lodge bear thinking about , and such as might be reviewed with profit and pleasure . Not only during the three short

years of its existence had the lodge made its mark in the province , but it had been , he fully believed , a blessing , both socially and morally , to the immediate neighbourhood . He assured the W . M . of the ungrudging support of himself and colleagues . " The Ladies " was most ably proposed by Bro . A . W . Reynolds , and humorously resoonded to by Bro . Dr .

Jordan . Bro . the Rev . R . W . Buckley , D . D ., Chap ., gave the toast of " The Masonic Charities " in the following terms : At this late hour it is highly expedient that I should not occupy your time with anything which deserves the name of a speech , and if I did inflict such a thing on you , have I not a good basis to go upon in the splendid Charities of the Order ? There are the schools for Masonic orphan bovs

and girls , and institutions for aged Freemasons and Masonic widows , and the Board of Benevolence spent over £ 11 , 000 on necessitous cases during 1888 . The sum total of contributions from the Order for charitable purposes for that year was above £ 94 , 000 . As I see that heavenly form of Charity I begin to pity her for having so weak an advocate , but I look again , and I find that she and I are supported

by two angel forms— " Memory " and " Hope . " Memory whispers to me that I am to look back at the efforts of our I . P . M . The Wells of Gadkeel were not more welcome or grateful to our troops hurrying over the Soudanese desert than vvas our " Wells " of the Prince Edward Lodge to the Masonic Charities j in fact , they found in him never-failing springs of benevolence . Then Hope suggests that the

future under our present Master will be bright , for I recognise in him astrong tendency—a "broadbent "—towards the lines so ably followed by his predecessor . In asking you to drink this toast , I am reminded that the Charities are aptly illustrated by an Egyptian hieroglyph—a naked child having his heart in his hand , and giving honey to a bee without wings . The heart in hand signifies the

cheerfulness of giving , and the bee without wings the worthiness and helplessness of the object relieved . Are not orphan boys and girls , aged Masons , and Masons' widows our bees without wings ? Let us toast them and support them , and may the Masonic Charities flourish and grow , and be more and more widely supported as the years roll by . It might here be stated that over £ 60 has been handed

over to Chanties from this lodge during the past year . The Tyler ' s toast brought the banquet to a close , and the rest of the evening vvas spent in the most enjoyable manner , songs and instrumental music taking place in the drawing room , the large hall being utilised for dancing . The musical arrangements were of the most elaborate

and varied description , assistance being rendered by Miss A . Thomas , Miss Webster , Mrs . Seager , Bros . J . H . Greenwood , Coffey , Seager , Thomas , Hesketh , Cole , Beever , and others . The catering , which gave every satisfaction , vvas by Bro . W . H . Mortimer .

Tyler . The lodge having been closed , the banquet and Festival of St . John was held , at which , as is customary with this lodge , ladies were present . The suite of rooms had been superbly furnished and decorated for the occasion , and the walls artistically hung with oil paintings , water colour drawings , and mirrorettes , generously provided by Bro . A .

W . H . Mortimer .
