After " The Masonic Charities , " to which Bro . H . A . Williamson , P . M ., responded , "The Visiting Brethren" was drunk , to which Bros . J . VV . Harrison , 1021 , and G . Wilkinson , P . " The Health of Bro . Darby , the Oldest Member of the Lodge , " wasproposed by Bro . J . VV . Woodall , P . M ., P . P . G . S . W ., and drunk with all the honours , Bro . VVoodall , at the same time , presenting him with " five
guineas , " which had been kindly contributed by the brethren present . Bro . Dartry , who had travelled from his disant home to pay his annual visit to his mother lodge , and is above eighty-two years of age , returned thanks for the honour conferred upon him , as also for the generous donation so kindly presented to him , and he assured the brethren that so long as his life might be spared by the G . A . O . T . U .
he should always endeavour to be present at the installation meeting of this , his mother lodge . Everything that could tend to promote the harmony and good feeling existing amongst the brethren was contributed by each present , and those members who possessed the enviable gift of a melodious voice vied with each other in giving some most excellent songs with great effect , and which were received by their less sfifted brethren with unbounded applause .
Upwards of sixty brethren sat down to banquet , and this most successful and enjoyable meeting will long live in the memory of the members of the Royal Lodge . A rather singular coincidence occurred or the occasion of Bro . Fowler being installed as VV . M . His Christian name is Valentine , and his installation took place on St . Valentine's Day , and an appropriate song , composed by Bro . Darby , was presented to him .
WOOLWICH . —The Nelson Lodge ( No . 710 ) The usual monthly meeting of the above lodge took place on Wednesday , the iGth inst ., at the Masonic Hall , William-street , under the presidency of Bro . for of Mr . Stanbridge , and , being unanimous , he was initiated . Bro . VV . Ducker was then raised to the Sublime Degree of a M . M ., the ceremonies being splendidly performed by the VV . M . The lodge was then closed , and after the brethren had partaken of a choicely served little supper and reassembled round the social board , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts
were proposed and honoured by the brethren . With commendable brevity , considering the late hour , Bro . Norman then proposed the toast of " The VV . M ., " and the W . M . as briefly responded . The toast of "The Past Masters " was received with warmth , and Bro . Butt assured the brethren that he and Bro . Norman had thc interest , of thc lodge at heart , and would continue in the future as they had in the past to do all in their power to further the
prosperity of the lodge . I he toast of " The Initiate followed , and Bro . Stanbridge modestly returned thanks . " The Visitors " was the next toast , and the reply was left in the hands of Bro . Jolly , who also replied to a very flattering toast of "The Freemason . " . "The Officers of the Lodge" received a worthy reply from Bro . Beaver , after which the Tyler's toast concluded the proceedings . 'The harmony was well sustained hy Bros . Butt , Saundcrson , Laccy , Roberts , Sweeting , and others .
CHESTER . —Lodge of Independence ( No . 721 ) . —The regular monthly meeting of this lodge was held at the Masonic Rooms , Eastgate-row North , on Monday evening , the 14 th instant . The minutes of the last lodge having been read and approved , and the Auditor's report read by the Treasurer , Bro . T . J . Mason , and approved , Mr . G . Brown was initiated in the First Degree , Bro . F . R . Price
was passed to tlie Second Degree , and Bro . VV . Freeman was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason . The impressive ceremonies were performed in an efficient manner by the W . M . Subsequently the W . M . stated to the brethren in lodge that he much regretted that through the lodge not having held a meeting since the commencement of the recent bad weather they had not had an
opportunity of votinga sum from the funds of the lodge towards the relief of the great distress which had prevailed in the city during the frost , but he wished the brethren to pass a special resolution in a vote of thanks to a worthy brother of this lodge , Bro . Jonathan Joinson , for the noble manner in which he had come to the front with monies at his disposal to the relief of the distressed in the city of Chester . By the
will of an old lady , named Elizabeth Jones , certain monies had been left to him , and another gentleman , named Mr . Leigh , to distribute in charity in Chester in any manner they should deem fit . The VV . M . stated that he had carefully watched Bro . Joinson in his noble works . First he ,
with Mr . Leigh ' s approbation , provided last Christmas a substantial Christmas dinner of roast beef and potatoes , with plum pudding , oranges , Sic , for all the poor children of the city in thc Town Hall , and provided them with clegs . He , the VV . M ., noticed on that occasion that not only did hungry children go away well filled , but each took away a

parcel of food . This was only a drop in ' the ocean . The frost came—such a frost ! and causing such distress as he , the VV . M ., had never known . Bro . Joinson was even equal to this . He obtained the sanction of his co-executor to carry out another of his original schemes . He took the Commonhall-street Chapel , and after suitably furnishing it for the purpose , sent and went forth into the dark corners
of the city every day , Sundays included , saying to all that were poor "Come in and eat . " During the frost he fed by this means twenty thousand and eighty poor people and children with bread and soup , or bread and cheese . He need say no more beyond this . Not only were the people well fed , but Bro . Joinson was himself always the centre of the group . Day after day he attended
amongst these famine-stricken people and administered as far as possible the charity with his own hands , and never had he ( the W . M . ) seen a Freemason so properly at work . And Bro . Joinson had made this old chapel into a Masonic lodge , for at the door stood the Tyler—actually the Tyler , engaged for the time the distribution lasted—armed not with a drawn sword , but a long knife , dividing large loaves
in halves . Further on stood the Master Mason , Bro . Joinson , superintending the further distribution , and seeing that no cowans or intruders , in the shape of tramps , were admitted . The W . M . said he had seen distress and famine in the East-end of London and other places in its worst forms , but in all his experience he had never seen anything in poverty to equal what he had seen at the
Commonhallstreet Chapel , in Chester , with such charity , so kindly and bountifully administered , as to satisfy all wants . The VV . M . concluded by proposing a cordial vote of thanks to Bro . Joinson , and that the same be entered upon the minutes of the lodge . The lodge gratefully and unanimously passed the resolution , and , on the lodge being closed , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , when , after the usual patriotic and Masonic toasts had been drunk , " The Health
of Bro . Joinson " was cordially drunk with Masonic honours ; and , in reply , Bro . Joinson stated that he thanked them all for so kindly receiving the toast of his health , but he would not venture to tarnish the good works they had referred to in the lodge by any words of his . Some capital songs , glees , and duets were sung by the visitors present , and after spending a very pleasant evening the brethren separated .

P . G . S . W ., andD . P . G . W . China , & c The next toast from the chair was "The Installing Master , Bro . J . VV . VVoodall , P . M ., P . P . G . S . W ., " who responded in very appropriate terms . Next' in succession was "The VV . M . of the Lodge and the Newly-Appointed Officers ,, " each of whom returned thanks in warm expressions for the honours conferred upon them . Then came "The Retiring W . M . and
his Officers , " and the highly-respected and worthy I . P . M . responded in a genial and humorous speech ; each of the retiring officers following in the same strain . After " The Masonic Charities , " to which Bro . H . A . Williamson , P . M ., responded , "The Visiting Brethren" was drunk , to which Bros . J . VV . Harrison , 1021 , and G . Wilkinson , P . M . 250 , severally responded . - " The Health of the VV . M . ' s of the
Old Globe , 200 ; Dennison , 124 S ; and Leopold , 1760 , and Success to their Lodges " having been proposed , the Worshipful Masters of those lodges respectively returned thanks . " Bro . R . Dobson's Health " was the next toast , on his appointment as Treasurer , and as the oldest P . M . of the lodge , to which he gave a well-worded and appropriate response . "The Indefatigable and Intelligent Hon . Sec , Bro . Walter Fisher , P . M ., " was next toasted amidst loud
applause—a warm eulogium was pronounced on his unceasing efforts to promote the well-being and prosperity of the lodge . He returned thanks in a short , but feeling and excellent , address .
Darby , was presented to him .
