Analysis Of The Returns.

ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNS .

There is no need for us to preface our usual analysis of the Subscription Lists by any lengthened remarks in the way either of praise or congratulation ; this part of our duty we have fulfilled elsewhere . We shall , however , take the opportunity of pointing out one or two feaiures of special interest which appear to characterise the Returns at Bro . Terry ' s greatest triumph . There is , in the first place , a closer approximation in numbers than we ordinarily see between the London and Provincial sections of the Board of

Stewards , and , as a consequence , the amounts raised by the two are more nearly level . In the next place , Bro . Terry appears to have been more successful than in any former year in working the London lodges between Nos . 700 and 1000 •and lastly , he has obtained assistance this year from considerably more than the usual one-third proportion—there or thereabouts—of the lodges in the London area . A mere glance at the list will suffice to demonstrate this .

Having acquitted ourselves of this preliminary duty , we pass at once to the business of examination . The total , as announced by Bro . Terry on Tuesday evening was ^ 18 , 700 iSs , but those of our readers who were present will call to mind that a number of lists was mentioned as being at the time outstanding . Some of these have reached the offices since , and no doubt we shall hear of others turning up in the course of the next ten or twelve days . However , so far as these further receipts have come in up to

the time of going to press , they have had the effect of substantially increasing the general total , which is now ^ 18 , 974 2 s , the number of brethren whose names were returned as Stewards being 378 . Of these 178 acted for London , and the amounts received from them total up £ 9 692 13 s . The other 200 Stewards hailed from the Provinces , and the Returns from those whose lists have reached Bro . Terry amount to ^ 9281 93 . As regards the Returns from LONDON ,

We note that of the 178 Stewards , 32 were unattached , 138 of them represented 132 lodges—there being sundry cases in which lodges were represented by two Stewards , and one or two in which a brother did duty for two lodges—while seven acted for as many Royal Arch chapters , in addition to which one Mark lodge and one Red Cross conclave sent each a representative . Having regard to the items composing * this splendid total

of & 9092 13 s ., we hnd them , speaking generally , satisfactory above the average , while if we look at the Returns ranging from £ 100 upwards , we shall find quite the usual , if not more than the usual , proportion . Bro . George Skudder , Steward for the Temperance Lod ge , No . 169 , has the honour of heading the array of big figures with a list of ^ 350 , Bro . John Bulmerof Sincerity , No . 174 , being , however , pretty close up with one of . £ 330 .

The Fitzroy Lodge , No . 569 , though at a long interval , stands ihird with £ 210 . Bro . Major A . Durrant being the member responsible for accumulating this sum , while in his immediate wake appears Bro . J . G . Tvvinn , of the Lodge of St . John , 1306 , with £ 201 is . 6 d . Then follow , and likewise close up , the Royal Sussex Lodge , No . 1 744 , and R . A . Chapter , No . 2048 conjoined , Bro . W . M . Stiles being Steward , with 7 and the Park

^ 196 s . ; Victoria Lodge , No . 1816 , Bro . C . N . Carrell , Steward , with £ 192 os . 6 d . Bro . Vivian Orchard of the P ythagorean , No . 179 , stands next with' ^ 178 ios ., and then the redoubtable Bro . James Terry himself , who appears to have thought the duty of organising an anniversary meeting was not sufficient , and must needs take upon himself a Stewardship as well . However , his return is X 176 i ^ s ., and we

may assume that he does not regret having charged himself with the additional burden . Bros . R . K . Bull , of the Merchant Navy Lodge , No . 781 , and S . G . Bonner , of the Corinthian , No . 1382 , are close together , the former's list amounting to , £ 170 7 s ., and the latter ' s to ^ 170 . Bro . H . White , Mizpah , No . 1671 , obtained £ 162 5 s . ; Bro . James Willing , jun ., acting for the Strand Lodge , No . 1987 , a round hundred and fifty

guineas ( 157 ios . ); and Bro . Daniel Hughes , representing the City of London Lodge , No . 901 , ^ 154 is . Prosperity Lodge , No . 65 , and Felicity Lodge , No . 58 ; are almost as close together as they are on Grand Lodge roll , the former contribuiing per Bro . R . Dyson , £ 138 is . 6 d ., and the latter per Bro . Thos . Reynolds , £ 135 9 s . After a shoit interval we find Bro . R . W . Galer , of the Highgate Lodge , No . 1366 , with a goodly return

of ^ 117 15 s . 6 d ., and close by him Bro . VV . McDougall of the London Rifle Brigade Lodge , No . 19 62 , with ^ 115 103 . —a second Steward Bro . James C . Tilt , from the same lodge having as yet sent in no return . Bro . James Boulton , who did duty for the Old King ' s Arms Lodge , No . 28 , and the Victoria , No . 1056 , obtained £ 112 123 . 6 d . ; Bro . Joseph Driscoll , steward for United Mariners Lodge , No . 30 , £ 110 18 s ., and Bro . Richard Cane , of .

the Great Northern , No . 1287 , £ 109 17 s . Bros . E . C . Mulvey and G . R . Langley , the former as steward for tne Manchester , No . 179 , and the latter ofthe Unity , No . 183 , tied with , £ 108 13 s . 6 d . Bro . James Pain , Wellington Lodge , No . 548 , is entered for £ 103 8 s . 6 d ., and Bro . John Larkin , Fidelity , No . 3 , for £ 103 7 s ., while Bro . Basil Stewart , representing the

Burdett-Coutts , No . 1278 , closes the array with a total of £ 101 7 s . These are by no means the only good returns included in the London section , but our space is too limited to admit of going into further detail . Under these circumstances the brethren who furnished them will doubtless forgive us for the omission , which proceeds from no lack of courtesy , but is the result of sheer necessity ,
