members of the joint Midland and North-Eastern Circuits to a dinner in celebration of his recent elevation to the bench . Drummond Wolff , M . P ., is convalescent from his late serious , and even dangerous , illness .

Bro . the Earl of Shaftesbury K . G ., among others addressed the meeting held at the Mansion House on Friday week , to consider a proposal , first made nearly two years and a half ago , to erect a memorial to William Tyndale , the first translator of the English Bible in the Saxon

tongue . We deeply regret to announce the death of Bro . the Right Hon . Lord Dunboyne , which sad event took place on Tuesday last , [ at his residence , Knoppoge Castle , Co . Clare . Lord Dunboyne , who was in his 75 th year , for many years held the office of Provincial Grand Master of North Munster .

The Keystone of March 12 th s . iys our esteemed Bro . Robert Freke Gould docs not seem to set any value upon " Masonic orations . " He says , in a recently printed article , " It is , of course , quite possible that Masonic orations may please some hearers , but I am aware of none that are calculated to afford either pleasure or instruction to readers . " With all due respect to our brother , we

cannot agree with him . In America , at least , valuable and well authenticated facts often appear in Masonic orations ; and when they do not , the benefit to hearers to be derived from an earnest presentation of Masonic truth even where no history is related , is undoubtedly of advantage to the Craft at large , as well as to individual brethren . We often need a vivid presentation of old truths to make them felt

as well as known ; and a little leaven often leavens the whole lump . The sixth annual ball in aid ol the benevolent fund of the Lodge of Israel , No . 1502 , was held on Tuesday week at the Adelphi Hotel , Liverpool . The Cosmopolitan Masonic Calendar , Diary , and Pocket Book , this year being the eleventh publication ,

is a comprehensive Masonic book of reference , containing particulars of every Grand Masonic Body in the world , and all kinds of out-of-the-way bits of information interesting and useful to Freemasons . The favour in which this useful compendium is held by members of the Universal Craft is shown by the second edition of this year ' s issue being nearly exhausted . It is published by Mr . His Royal Hig hness the Prince of Wales has fixed Monday , May gth , for the festival dinner of the Royal Hospital for Children and Women , at which His Royal Highness will preside . Bro . the Right Hon . Lord Donoughmore , P . G . VV ., in the absence of H . R . H . the Duke of Edinburgh , presided at the festival in aid of the Benevolent Society of St . Patrick , when the handsome sum of £ 900 was

collected . Bro . Wilhelm Kuhe , P . G . O ., announces a grand performance of "The Messiah" at the Dome on the 31 st of April . Bro . H . Clay Sudlow was elected the Preceptor of the Langton Lodge of Instruction , and not " Bro . H . Clay Saunders , " as stated in the " Masonic Tidings " of last week .

Bro . W . A . Ellis gave a pianofore recital from the works of Weber , Mendelssohn , Schumann , and Chopin at Brixton Hall , on Tuesday , the 15 th inst . The numbers comprised—Weber ' s Sonata in A flat , Op . 39 ; Allegro Moderato con Spirito ; Andante Menuetto Capriccioso Rondo ; Mendelssohn ' s Klingermann Caprice in B flat minor ; Andante Cantabile and Presto Agitato in B minor ;

Schumann ' s Phantasie Stiicke , Op . 12 ; Abendo AufschuungWarum ; Grillen and Chopin Scherzo in E major ; Etude in C sharp minor ; Berceause in D . flat ; and Polonaise in A flat , Op . 53 . Bro . Ellis is a pianiste of no mean order , and should at no distant date take a position in the front rank of his profession . His execution of the

several items displayed considerable ability , which was fully recognised by the frequent applause of a critical and appreciative audience . The proceedings were agreeably diversified by the singing of Miss Emilie AsmanandMr . Robert Poole , whose efforts met with much favour , Miss Asman receiving a recall for her song , "Beloved again . " Mr . H . W . Little , Mus . Bac , filled the post of conductor .

Major George S . 1 udor was on Wednesday installed Grand Master of the Province of Staffordshire by the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom . The ceremony was performed in the Borough Hall , Stafford , in the presence of a large gathering of the Craft . A full report of the

interesting proceedings will appear 111 our next . Bro . G . W . Moore , of Minstrel fame , will take his sixteenth annual benefit at St . James ' s Grand Hall on Thursday next , the 31 st inst . There will be two performances , each being of the most entertaining character .

Bro . Sir Patrick Colquhoun , LL . D ., Q . C ., presided at a ' meeting of the Royal Society of Literature held on Wednesday evening , when a paper was read by Mr . C F . Kerry , on "The Genuine and Spurious in the Eddaic Mythology .

The Hon . E . Chandos Leigh , son of Bro . the Right Hon . Lord Leigh , one of the new Queen ' s Counsel , was on Tuesday called within the bar and took his seat accordingl y in the various Courts of Chancery and Common Law Divisions of the High Court of Justice .

Bro . Lionel Brough has joined Miss Lilton ' sprovincial tour company . Bro . F . K . Bayley , ex-Sheriff of London , was on Monday sworn in as one of the magistrates for Middlesex .

King ' s Cross Theatre , which was the scene of Bro . Henry Irving ' sdebut , is to be pulled down . The lease expires on the 2 Sth inst . It is stated that no prosecution of the Rev . Bell Cox , of St . Margaret's , Liverpool , son of Bro . the Rev . Dr . Cox , P . G . C ., vicar of St . Helen , Bishopsgate , will take

place , as the Bishop of Liverpool was one of the three bishops of the northern province who met their Canterbury brethren last month , when the resolution was arrived at not to take further proceedings pending the report of the Royal Commissioners on the constitution of the Ecclesiastical Courts .

Bro . His Royal Highness Prince Leopold gave a final sitting for his portrait to Mr . Walter Goodman , at Windsor Castle , on Wednesday . The Home Secretary has appointed Mr . Horace Smith , of the Midland Circuit , to the Recordership of Lincoln , rendered vacant by the recent elevation of Bro . Justice Cave to the Bench . Mr . Smith was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1 SG 2 .

Bro . Sir Edmund Lcchmerc , Bart ., presided at the meeting of St . John ' s Ambulance Association on Friday , and presented medals and certificates of proficiency to the ambu ' ance classes held in connection with the Metropolitan and City Police . Bro . Macrae Moir occupied the vice chair at the anniversary dinner of the Highland Society of London , held at Freemasons' Tavern on Monday .

Bro . J . C . Dwarbcr presided at the meeting of the Bartholomew Club on Tuesday night . Bro . the Karl of Jersey , with the Countess , has left town for Biarritz . Bro . G . H . Stephens , J . Sir Watkin Williams Wynn , Bart ., M . P ., R . W . Grand Master North Wales and Salop , will hold his annual Provincial Grand Lod ge at Newport , Salop , on Tuesday , April 26 th .

Bro . Frank Uffner , of Piccadilly Hall , has dispatched an agent to British Burmah for the King's Hairy Family , and expects them to arrive here early in May , arrangements having been made with His Majesty the King for them to be exhibited in this country .

Bro . the Hon . Sir Michael Hicks-Beach , Bart ., M . P ., will preside at the ninety-third anniversary festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , on Wednesday , the iSth May . Bro . the Earl of March , S . W . 38 , owner of the Prince of Wales ' s late yacht , the Hildegarde , has been elected a member of the Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Club .

Bro . C . Woolloton was present on Monday at a meeting held at Bourncmonth , under the presidency of Bishop Ryan , and spoke in advocacy of the British and Foreign Bible Society . Bro . Joseph H . Spencer ( late of the Bridge

House Hotel ) on Thursday evening week invited the committee of the Westminster Club , Albemarle-street , of which he is proprietor , to dinner . It seems that the club , which is an old-fashioned non-political and social club , is progressing , as new members are coming in , but there are yet a few vacancies to complete the prescribed number—400 .

Deputy Grand Master , of Masonic history states that the office of Deputy Grand Master originated in the year 1721 , at the time the Duke of Montagu held the office of Grand Master . Grand Lodge , evidently with the object of relieving a nobleman from the troublesome details of office , authorized the Duke to appoint a Deputy , which appendage has clung to the Order ever since .

MANSION HOUSE OUTRAGE . —The reward of £ 100 for information as to the authors of the recent attempt to blow up the Mansion House has been increased by Government to £ 400 . In the month of July , 1879 , a young brother , the initials of whose name are R . T . S ., disappeared from a seaport town in the West of Scotland , where he was then

residing . _ A short time previous he had sustained severe domestic bereavements , which had evidently weighed heavily upon his mind and might have induced him to leave without giving his parents and friends any reasons for his strange conduct , or any clue whereby his whereabouts might be traced . Every effort was made at the time to

find him—but in vain ; ultimately it was ascertained he had gone to Liverpool that month , but after that all traces of him were lost . This paragraph is inserted with the hope that being a member of the Craft it may meet his eye . ' or that of other Masonic readers , and lead to the opening up of communication between him - and his friends . The Editor will be glad to receive any such intelligence , and forward it to their address .

Her Majesty and Princess Beatrice arc expected to go to Osborne early next month . Lord Colville of Culross , Chamberlain to Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales , has left London for Copenhagen , to attend the funeral of the late Queen Dowager of Denmark . "'

The Royal Humane Society has voted its silver medallion to Miss Jennie Coates , of Portumna , county Galway , for courageous conduct in rescuing her sister , who had broken through the ice while skating , and also for endeavouring to save Captain Lewis , of the Galway Militia , who was drowned in his efforts to save the girl who had been immersed .

Mr . F . W . Moody , instructor in decorative art , South Kensington Museum , is designing a large memorial window for St . Paul ' s Cathedral , to ' commemorate the restoration of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales to healthsome few years since . As at present arranged , the Oxford and Cambridge boat race will take place on Friday week , the Sth

proximo , at half-past eight in the morning . The recent recognition b y Her Majesty of a Canadian Barony is an exceptional circumstance , and the gentleman , Baron de Longueiiil , whose title has been acknowledged , holds the remarkable position of being the only subject of the Queen who is a colonial Peer , and who at the same time has not any precedence . The Feudal

Barony is entirely exceptional , and is the only Canadian hereditary title existing . The Patent of Nobility , signed by King Louis XIV . granting this title to Charles Le Moyne for distinguished services , is remarkable as creating not only a Territorial Barony , but also conferring a title of honour upon himself and his descendants , whether male

or female . The cession of Canada to England , by the Treaty of Paris in 1763 , made no change in the legal right to hold honours ; since this period each successive head of the family has , b y assumption of right , used the title ; but it was not officially recognised by the British Government until December 4 th , 18 S 0 . —Dcbrctt ' s Peerage .

The Quarterly Communication of the R . W . Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania was held on Wednesday evening the 2 nd inst ., in Corinthian Hall of the Masonic Temple , Philadelphia , Bro . Samuel B . Dick , R . W . Grand Master , presiding . All the Grand Officers were present ,

and there was an unusually large attendance of District Deputy Grand Master and members , from all parts of the jurisdiction . It is stated that the Edison Electric Light Company is to have the same privileges for laying tubes and erecting lamp-posts in New York as the gas companies . The company propose to furnish lights for stores and houses , but not to light the streets at present .
