LADIES' NIGHT OF THE CAMDEN LODGE , NO . 704 .
Following a successful experiment tried by former Masters , Bro . Francis Robinson , W . M . of the Camden Lodge , No . 704 , on Tuesday the 15 th inst ., entertained ladies at the banquet which followed the Masonic work of the day . The brethren met at five o ' clock for work ,
and there was a capital attendance , including Bros . H . E . Coffin , P . M . ; Geo . W . Osborn , P . M . ; A . T . Eyers , P . AI . ; Edwin Styles , S . W . ; David Ososki , J . W . ; F . Trinder , P . M ., Treas . ; Dr . N . Goodchild , P . M ., Sec . ; N . J . Goodchild , P . M ., Asst . Sec . ; A . A . Nottingham , S . D . ; W . H . Williams , J . D . ; H . W . Coplestone , I . M . 619 and 1928 ; A . Rathbone , 749 ; S . Tryon , W . M . 1385 ; R . Barnes , W . M . 1261 ; John J . Suter , W . M . 1834 ; James Marup , 761 ( S . C . ); W . Applegood , 1708 ; N . Robinson , S . W . 55 ; J . Buchanan ,
1599 ; H . Tildesley , I . G . 1585 ; W . Harris , 1585 ; C . J . Smith , S . W . 1623 ; A . G . Theobald , 1201 ; and D . Baker , 1743 . The lodge work consisted of raising Bros . C . J , Towerzey and John Harrison , and initiating Messrs . Charles Bone and M . Davis , all of which work was
well performed by the W . M . and his officers . After some other Masonic affairs had been attended to , the lodge was closed , and the brethren prepared to receive the ladies . These came up in goodly numbers , and a party of over 100 ladies and brethren sat down to dinner . This was most beautifully supplied , and left nothing to be desired .
The W . M ., with a consideration which was thoroughly appreciated , liberally provided for every lady a pretty souvenir of their visit . After the dinner a beautiful selection of music was performed by Bros . W . Point , Gammon , Osborn , Styles , Percy Cooper , Goodchild , Asst . Secretary ; Miss Amy Brook , Cert . R . A . M ., Miss Jenny Eungblut
( mandolin solo ) , Messrs . Walter Grace , C . S . Crowe , Harry Ward , George Beauchamp , Robert Childs , and Aliss Rasey , R . A . M . All the performers were most deservedly applauded , their rendering being simply superb . In g iving the toast of " The M . W . G . M . , " the WORSHIPFUL MASTER said that lately Masons had been accustomed to approach this toast with somewhat

of trepidation on account of the great loss the Prince of Wales had sustained . He ( the W . M . ) had thought at one time of putting off the present entertainment because of that calamity , but other counsels prevailed and he agreed that it would be better to let the enterl ta ' inment be held , and thus the present very pleasant evening was the result .
Bro . COFFIN , I . P . M ., after the toast of " The Pro Grand Master , Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " had been duly honoured , proposed "The Health of the Worshi pful Master , " and in doing so , said he felt very proud oi the position he held , as it gave him the opportunity of giving a toast which was worthy of the greatest
enthusiasm . In the lodge the brethren had had the opportunity of seeing the W . M . 's work performed in a way which was a credit to the lodge and an encouragement to the officers . Bro . Robinson had done the work in a way which was satisfactory to all , and he had shown that he was an honour to the chair . Again , he had given the brethren the opportunity of having the
ladies with them at the banquet as other Masters of the Camden Lodge had done , and as he hoped future Masters would do . He trusted that the brethren would give a hearty reception to that toast , as he would not have an opportunity of proposing it many more evenings ; but he was very proud on that occasion to witness such an array of ladies , and he hoped many
similar gatherings would be seen in future . The WORSHIPFUL MASTER , in reply , said he did not feel that a long speech was necessary , and therefore he hoped the brethren would be satisfied by his simply thanking the brethren for their reception of the toast . He had not expected to see so grand an assembl y as the present , but still there it was , and he hoped both
ladies and brethren had enjoyed themselves . The WORSHIPFUL MASTER , in proposing the toast ol " The Ladies , " said that he approached it with great care , because never being a ladies' man , he could not do justice to it . Still he was sure the ladies would excuse him if he did not comment too strongly on it , as the hour was getting late . He was astonished ,
gratified , and pleased to see such a bevy of beautiful ladies around him . He trusted the ladies who were present , and who had honoured the Camden Lodge with their presence that evening , had enjoyed themselves , and he hoped they would not be strangers among the brethren , but that in another twelve months they would be present again when the S . W . was elected
to the chair . The S . W . was a ladies man , and no doubt when he was W . M . he would have a large number of ladies present at the ladies' night . He wished the ladies to know that Masonic gatherings did not consist of conviviality ; Masons had for their great
object Charity , and he would direct their attention to the fact that at the last Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution more than £ 62 , 000 was raised for the assistance of the aged Freemasons and the widows of Freemasons . He commended this fact to the consideration of the ladies .
Bro . J . SIMPSON , A . D . C , in reply , said he regretted the W . M . had not placed the response to the toast in the hands of a more experienced brother , for the toast was really the most important of the evening . The Senior Warden was a ladies' man , and he had a pre . ponderance of ladies at his end of the table , and there . fore might have been considered a more fit respondent to
the toast . But he ( Bro . Simpson ) in his capacity of Assistant Director of Ceremonies , had had opportunities at that hospitable board of ascertaining the opinion oi the ladies about this little festival , and he had ascertained that their unanimous opinion was , that they had enjoyed themselves exceedingly . On their behalf , therefore , he thanked the W . M . and the lodge for the entertainment provided , and for the souvenir which the not
W . M . had given to each of them . The ladies did have the pleasure of attending at these banquets as often as they would desire , but still when they did they were much pleased . The present meeting certainly augured well for the success of the Camden Lodge . The other toasts followed , Bro . Davis replying for "The Initiates , " and Bro . Goodchild , jun ., P . M ., I " " The Past Masters . "

well performed by the W . M . and his officers .
