Pupils are only sent to farmers of good character , and who are known personally to Canon Cooper . Canon Cooper having lived in British Columbia , and having travelled through every part of Canada , is thoroughly qualified to give reliable information as to the prospects of emigrants and settlers ; he has correspondents in all parts of Canada , to whose care his emigrants are sent .
The Theatres.
THE THEATRES .
" Happy Returns at the Vaudeville has proved such happy returns of luck , that Bro . Thos . Thorne must be sorry he has entered into negotiations to leave his bijou theatre . So well have the public responded to Mr . Horner ' s latest French adaptation , that
Wednesday and Saturday matinees are now arranged tor . In his boxing monologue , Bro . Thorne causes his little theatre to reverberate with laughter . We only hope if he is giving up the tenancy of the Vaudeville his last days there may be as bright and fortunate as his first days .
* * * Some people are wishing to know how long Bro . Wyndham will be in bringing out a new play . For ourselves , glad as we shall be to see one , as long as this volatile comedian is in it , we are quite satisfied with revivals of his successes which he has been giving of late . A theatre is run as a commercial speculation ,
therefore why should a lessee run the risk of a failure in bringing out new plays—and many new pieces are not a success—when he is quite certain of netting a large sum by frequent changes of his repertoire by which he has established his reputation ' : ' " David Garrick , " " Fourteen Days , " " Road to Ruin , " " Brighton , " and others , it matters not which ,
always draw crowds at the Criterion . Bro . Wyndham has this week revived " Brighton , " Bronson Howard ' s charming farcical comedy , in which the lessee is inimitable as Bob Sackett . He is supported most ably by Miss Mary Moore , Miss Frances , Mr . Phelps , Mr . Blakeley , Mr . Walter Everard , Mr . Atherley , and others .
» * * Were the directors of the London Pavilion to strengthen their present programme they could not get any more people inside , for this popular place of amusement is thronged nightly . We know some people go to the Gaiety to hear Miss Lottie Collins sing her famous song which has become such a rage , and also
look in at the . Pavilion to hear her there in "Ta-ra-raboom-de-ay . " Amongst the other artistes are M . Brunin , Messrs . Charles Godfrey , Barrett , Chevalier , Harry Pleon , Macdermott , and Ben Nathan , Lieut . Cole , and the Two Macs , Misses Nellie Navette , Alma Stanley , Florence Levey , Lilian Price , Alice Leamar ,
Jenny Hill , and Marie Collins . A longer and stronger company cannot be found anywhere . It is little wonder that the genial Past Master of 1319 , Bro . Edward Swanborongh , beams so in the face as the representative of his directors , whom he has faithfully served for so many years .
* * * In the course of a few months , it may be a year , we shall in all probability have to say bon voyage to Bro . Edward Terry , P . G . Treas ., who contemplates doing the grand round by visiting Australia , New Zealand , India , China , and America . This will occupy about a year , and we are sure that our brethren in the Antipodes
and the States will give him a hearty welcome , not only in the theatres in which he will delight them in going through his manifold plays , but in their lodges , where they will rival one another to entertain him . What is our loss for a year will be their gain for the same time . He will be accompanied by his active and acting
manager , Bro . | H . T . Brickwell , who for so long has been Bro . Terry ' s right-hand , and whom the public greet as their friend . We think it not at all inapt that the announcement of Bro . Terry ' s tour should be first made in the columns of this journal , of which he is a diligent reader .
