Masonic Notes .

We are pleased to learn that the services of Bro . Robert Grey to the Foundling Hospital , of which he has been , 1 member of the governing body for manyyears , have been recognised hy his virtual election as

Treasurer , Bro . Sir J . Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., M . P ., having withdrawn his consent to be nominated as a candidate in view of the strong claims which Bro . Grey has to the honour .

Very general and sincere sympathy will be felt with Bro . J . Morrison McLeod , Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , in the severe domestic bereavement he has just suffered through the death of his wife . Mrs . McLeod , who was only 36 years of age ,

died on Friday , the 18 th inst ., after a protracted illness , which she had borne with exemplary patience and fortitude . But , though the end had been long ; foreseen , the calamity is none the less heavy to bear , and we

trust that Bro . McLeod will find some slight consolation in the midst of all his cares and grief in the kindly feelings entertained towards him at all times , but more especially at the present moment by his brother Masons .

We have been requested to state that the nominations of Bros . Robert D . Cummings , James P . Fitzgerald and W . H . Read , C . M . G ., P . D . G . M . Eastern Archipelago , as London candidates for the Board of Management of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys have

been withdrawn . This reduces the list to 10 , of whom five will be elected at the Quarterly Court which will be holden at Freemasons' Tavern , on Friday , the Sth April . We may add that the candidature of the boy placed at No . 1 on the list for the election at the same Court has also been withdrawn .

* Bro . James Newton , F . C . A ., of Bolton ( P . P . G . D . and Asst . Prov . G . Sec ) , has been elected , by a large majority , as Secretary of the "East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution , "

in succession to the well-known Provincial Grand Sec . retary of East Lancashire , Bro . John Chadwick , P . G . D . Better choice could not possibly have been made , and the interests of that most useful Society will be in safe hands .

We are pleased to learn that our able and zealous confrere , Bro . Edward Macbean , S . D . of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 , London , has been promoted from Grand Sojourner to Grand Chancellor of the

Supreme Royal Arch Grand Chapter of Scotland , having been elected to that high office at the last statutory meeting . Bro . Macbean has taken great interest in the Royal Arch , and well deserves this special honour .

We are much gratified to hear from Bro . William Watson , of Leeds , that the West Yorkshire Masonic Library has secured another copy of the " Old Charges , " and , as in two instances before , it is the gift of the esteemed Prov . Grand Master , the R . W . Bro .

Thomas W . Teiv . The new , or rather old manuscript , is to be known as " The Hughan MS . " in accordance with the express wish of the donor , as noted by Bro . Watson elsewhere . Assuredly if any brother ' s name should be permanently identified with these

Masonic " Rolls" or " Constitutions , " it is that of Bro , Hughan , who has done more than any student , past or present , in relation to the discovery , description , and reproduction of these valuable documents . We consider it both happy and appropriate for the Prov .

Grand Master of West Yorkshire thus to commemorate Bro . Hughan's invaluable services , not only on behalf of that Province but to the Craft generally , as they have been unstinted , free , and most generously rendered for nearly 30 years , and certainly have well deserved such prominent and kindly recognition .
