Long reported that his list for the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution reached £ 35 , and Bro . Edgell , S . W ., offered to represent the lodge at the approaching Girls' Festival . During the sitting a letter was brought in from a German brother , asking for help to
enable him to return to his native land , and pleading urgency on the ground that he was anxious to start before the Board of Benevolence would next meet . While the bethren were discussing what to do , the Treasurer re-entered the lodge and said that on sight ( and touch ) of a shilling the " distressed " brother quickly vanished . Other lodges will perhaps note this ! The Worshipful . Master proposed a candidate for
initiation , and having closed the lodge , the brethren adjourned to partake of . the banquet , which was not given at the installation owing to the death of the Duke of Clarence . Propositions having been made with regard to a joining member and a candidate for initiation , the lodge was closed .
A repast , subsequently partaken of in the hotel , proved of its customary excellent character . The loyal toasts having been honoured , that of "The Worshi p ful Alaster" was proposed by Bro . John Tidmarsh , who , in a neat speech , congratulated the VV . AL on the very creditable way he had performed his duties . The W . M ., in acknowledging the compliment , said that
any credit the brethren thought due to him was in a great measure the result of the splendid example set him by Bro . 'Tidmarsh during his year of ofiice . The toast of "The Initiates , Bros . Present and Past , " spoke of the good fortune of the Craft in having men of such known ability and position to lead them . He thought Alasons generall y were above the average of their fellow men in many points , but the Grand Officers were the picked men of the Craft , and they honoured and revered them accordingly . Letchworth had given up a position worth more than that in order that he might undertake the arduous and responsible duties of the Grand Secretaryship . Provincia ! Grand Lodge scheme for concentrating the voting power of the province , and the same met with the hearty approval of the brethren , the W . AL undertaking to represent the lodge on any Committee subsequently formed to carry out the laudable object named . Propositions having been made with regard to a joining member and a candidate for initiation , the lodge was closed .
A repast , subsequently partaken of in the hotel , proved of its customary excellent character . The loyal toasts having been honoured , that of "The Worshi p ful Alaster" was proposed by Bro . John Tidmarsh , who , in a neat speech , congratulated the VV . AL on the very creditable way he had performed his duties . The W . M ., in acknowledging the compliment , said that
any credit the brethren thought due to him was in a great measure the result of the splendid example set him by Bro . 'Tidmarsh during his year of ofiice . The toast of "The Initiates , Bros . He thought Alasons generall y were above the average of their fellow men in many points , but the Grand Officers were the picked men of the Craft , and they honoured and revered them accordingly . to the toast , was enthusiastically received . He particularly deplored the removal by untimely death of H . R . H . . the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , K . G ., who had given bright promise of future usefulness . They had also suffered a heavy blow in the loss of Bro . Colonel Shadwell Clerke , but he was pleased to be able to tell them that a most excellent brother had been selected to preside over the
important work which fell to the Grand Secretary ' s ofiice . The appointment was now worth £ 1000 a year , but Bro . Letchworth had given up a position worth more than that in order that he might undertake the arduous and responsible duties of the Grand Secretaryship .
