KINGSTON-ON- TIIA MES . Dobie Lodge ( No . 889 ) . —There was a good attendance of members and visitors at the meetinsr , at the Griffin Hotel , on the 16 th instant , when Bro . A . AI . Levy , VV . M ., was supported by all his officers ( some of whom were absent through illness on the night of their appointment ) , viz ., Bros . Jas . Edgell , S . VV . ; Bond , . J . W . ; F .

G . ; and Edgell Westmacott , D . C The formal business being over the ballot was taken , and proved unanimous for two candidates , Alessrs . Arthur Edward Page and Arthur Watkin , who were initiated in an able and impressive manner by the

W . M ., being his first working in the chair . Having previously rehearsed the ceremony with his Wardens and Deacons , the utmost smoothness was observable , and the VV . Al . gave the old charge to the initiates in eloquent terms . Bro . Hayward , I . P . M ., who was prevented by illness from attending the installation meeting , was then presented with the jewel voted to him , and the W . M . was

onl y expressing the opinion of every member when he said that his predecessor well deserved the honour . Bro . Long reported that his list for the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution reached £ 35 , and Bro . Edgell , S . W ., offered to represent the lodge at the approaching Girls' Festival . During the sitting a letter was brought in from a German brother , asking for help to

enable him to return to his native land , and pleading urgency on the ground that he was anxious to start before the Board of Benevolence would next meet . While the bethren were discussing what to do , the Treasurer re-entered the lodge and said that on sight ( and touch ) of a shilling the " distressed " brother quickly vanished . Other lodges will perhaps note this ! The Worshipful . Master proposed a candidate for

initiation , and having closed the lodge , the brethren adjourned to partake of . the banquet , which was not given at the installation owing to the death of the Duke of Clarence . The lodge had the pleasure of entertaining the Worshipful Masters of the St . Margaret , Brownrigg , and representatives of the Surbiton and Arnold Lodges , and a most pleasant evening was passed .

SOUTHALL . Jersey Lodge ( No . 2163 ) . —This lodge met at the Railway Hotel on Monday , the 7 th inst ., Bro . George Harper , W . AL , ably presiding . There were present the complement of officers and a goodly numberof lay members . The visitors included Bros , the Rev . Wm . Holding , late Sec . 734 ; H . VV . Nicholson , P . M . and Sec 3 S 2 ; A .

Pooley , W . AL 1612 ; and T . Simpson , 2157 . 'The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed , the ballot was taken for Alessrs . T . E . Harland and IT . R . Lancaster , and the same proving unanimous , these candidates were impressively initiated , Bro . the Rev . Holding acting as Chaplain . A vote of £ 5 5 s . was granted towards the Steward's list of Bro . VV . A . Cocks , S . VV ., who

had elected to serve for the R . AI . B . I . It transpired that the brother ' s list had reached over £ 34 , being a larger sum than that collected by any previous Steward representing the lodge . A suggestion that a summer outing take the place of the proposed annual ball was favourably received , and left for future con : ideration and arrangements . The Secretary , Bro . W . C . Hall , P . M ., read particulars of the

Provincia ! Grand Lodge scheme for concentrating the voting power of the province , and the same met with the hearty approval of the brethren , the W . AL undertaking to represent the lodge on any Committee subsequently formed to carry out the laudable object named . Propositions having been made with regard to a joining member and a candidate for initiation , the lodge was closed .

A repast , subsequently partaken of in the hotel , proved of its customary excellent character . The loyal toasts having been honoured , that of "The Worshi p ful Alaster" was proposed by Bro . John Tidmarsh , who , in a neat speech , congratulated the VV . AL on the very creditable way he had performed his duties . The W . M ., in acknowledging the compliment , said that

any credit the brethren thought due to him was in a great measure the result of the splendid example set him by Bro . 'Tidmarsh during his year of ofiice . The toast of "The Initiates , Bros . Harland and Lancaster , " was received most warmly , both of the brethren responding in terms of gratitude for their admission into the Craft . Replying to "The Visitors , " Bro . the Rev . VV . Holding

said his reception at "the Jersey" reminded him of the hospitality of his own province , Yorkshire ; he could assure the brethren he had met with no more cordial welcome since leaving his mother lodge . Hros . IT . VV . Nicholson , Pooley , and Simpson also acknowledged the heartiness of their reception as visitors . As usual , music , singing , and recitations in agreeable variations contributed much to the evening ' s pleasure .

STONEHOUSE . Metham Lodge ( No . 1205 ) . —The members of this lodge held their annual meeting at their rooms , Caroline-place , on the 21 st inst ., when the W . AL elect , Bro . G . Perkins , was installed as W . M . Bros . G , Perring , the retiring W . AL ; S . Jew , P . P . G . T . ; R . Dickson , A . VV . King , and P . J . Dunn were the Installing Officers . The

Perring , in recognition of the able manner in which he had conducted the business of the lodge during his year of office . It was explained during the evening that the change in the Secretaryship had entirely arisen at the request of Bro .

Powell who had desired to retire from his office after a service extending over a great numbsr of years . Several brethren expressed a wish that such long and able service should be recorded , and it was resolved to enter a vote of thanks in the minutes of the lodge , and that Bro . Powell should also be presented with an illuminated and framed address on vellum .

There being no further business , the lodge was closed , and the brethren assembled in the large hall , which had been transformed into a delightful banqueting room . The central portion of the hall was screened off and gaily

decorated with Hags , most kindly lent by Lieut , aayce , K . N ., whilst the deep windows were filled with choice plar . ts . The banquet was provided , and served under the direction of Miss Hamblen , and gave perfect satisfaction . The usual loyal and Alasonic toasts were given , the VV . M , presiding with conspicuous ability . "The Oueen and the Craft" and "The M . W . G . M .,

H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , K . G ., " were proposed by the W . M ., who referred in fitting terms to the great loss sustained by the head of the Craft , and to the universal sympathy evoked by the sad bereavement that had fallen upon him . Bro . Rev . J . E . Player , in proposing the toast of "The ProG . M ., the Earl of Lathom ; the D . G . M ., the Earl of Alount Edgcumbe ; and the rest of the Grand Officers ,

Present and Past , " spoke of the good fortune of the Craft in having men of such known ability and position to lead them . He thought Alasons generall y were above the average of their fellow men in many points , but the Grand Officers were the picked men of the Craft , and they honoured and revered them accordingly . The D . P . G . AL , Bro . Hamon Le Strange , who responded

to the toast , was enthusiastically received . He particularly deplored the removal by untimely death of H . R . H . . the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , K . G ., who had given bright promise of future usefulness . They had also suffered a heavy blow in the loss of Bro . Colonel Shadwell Clerke , but he was pleased to be able to tell them that a most excellent brother had been selected to preside over the

important work which fell to the Grand Secretary ' s ofiice . The appointment was now worth £ 1000 a year , but Bro . Letchworth had given up a position worth more than that in order that he might undertake the arduous and responsible duties of the Grand Secretaryship . They hadin their neiv Grand Secretary an earnest , able , working Alason , and the Grand Alaster ' s appointment had given universal

satisfaction . The toast of " The R . W . Provincial Grand Master . Uro . Lord Sufiield , K . C . B ., " was proposed by Bro . Sparks , who expressed the hope that the Provincial Grand Master might soon be restored to health . . The Deputy Provincial Grand . Al . gave the old charge to the initiates in eloquent terms . Bro . Hayward , I . P . M ., who was prevented by illness from attending the installation meeting , was then presented with the jewel voted to him , and the W . M . was

onl y expressing the opinion of every member when he said that his predecessor well deserved the honour . Bro . Long reported that his list for the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution reached £ 35 , and Bro . Edgell , S . W ., offered to represent the lodge at the approaching Girls' Festival . During the sitting a letter was brought in from a German brother , asking for help to

enable him to return to his native land , and pleading urgency on the ground that he was anxious to start before the Board of Benevolence would next meet . While the bethren were discussing what to do , the Treasurer re-entered the lodge and said that on sight ( and touch ) of a shilling the " distressed " brother quickly vanished . Other lodges will perhaps note this ! The Worshipful . Master proposed a candidate for

initiation , and having closed the lodge , the brethren adjourned to partake of . the banquet , which was not given at the installation owing to the death of the Duke of Clarence . The lodge had the pleasure of entertaining the Worshipful Masters of the St . Margaret , Brownrigg , and representatives of the Surbiton and Arnold Lodges , and a most pleasant evening was passed .

Pooley , W . AL 1612 ; and T . Simpson , 2157 . 'The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed , the ballot was taken for Alessrs . T . E . Harland and IT . R . Lancaster , and the same proving unanimous , these candidates were impressively initiated , Bro . the Rev . Holding acting as Chaplain . A vote of £ 5 5 s . was granted towards the Steward's list of Bro . VV . A . Cocks , S . VV ., who

had elected to serve for the R . AI . B . I . It transpired that the brother ' s list had reached over £ 34 , being a larger sum than that collected by any previous Steward representing the lodge . A suggestion that a summer outing take the place of the proposed annual ball was favourably received , and left for future con : ideration and arrangements . The Secretary , Bro . W . C . Hall , P . M ., read particulars of the

Provincia ! Grand Lodge scheme for concentrating the voting power of the province , and the same met with the hearty approval of the brethren , the W . AL undertaking to represent the lodge on any Committee subsequently formed to carry out the laudable object named . Propositions having been made with regard to a joining member and a candidate for initiation , the lodge was closed .

A repast , subsequently partaken of in the hotel , proved of its customary excellent character . The loyal toasts having been honoured , that of "The Worshi p ful Alaster" was proposed by Bro . John Tidmarsh , who , in a neat speech , congratulated the VV . AL on the very creditable way he had performed his duties . The W . M ., in acknowledging the compliment , said that

any credit the brethren thought due to him was in a great measure the result of the splendid example set him by Bro . 'Tidmarsh during his year of ofiice . The toast of "The Initiates , Bros . Harland and Lancaster , " was received most warmly , both of the brethren responding in terms of gratitude for their admission into the Craft . Replying to "The Visitors , " Bro . the Rev . VV . Holding

said his reception at "the Jersey" reminded him of the hospitality of his own province , Yorkshire ; he could assure the brethren he had met with no more cordial welcome since leaving his mother lodge . Hros . IT . VV . Nicholson , Pooley , and Simpson also acknowledged the heartiness of their reception as visitors . As usual , music , singing , and recitations in agreeable variations contributed much to the evening ' s pleasure .

Powell who had desired to retire from his office after a service extending over a great numbsr of years . Several brethren expressed a wish that such long and able service should be recorded , and it was resolved to enter a vote of thanks in the minutes of the lodge , and that Bro . Powell should also be presented with an illuminated and framed address on vellum .

The banquet was provided , and served under the direction of Miss Hamblen , and gave perfect satisfaction . The usual loyal and Alasonic toasts were given , the VV . M , presiding with conspicuous ability . "The Oueen and the Craft" and "The M . W . G . M .,

H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , K . G ., " were proposed by the W . M ., who referred in fitting terms to the great loss sustained by the head of the Craft , and to the universal sympathy evoked by the sad bereavement that had fallen upon him . Bro . Rev . J . E . Player , in proposing the toast of "The ProG . M ., the Earl of Lathom ; the D . G . M ., the Earl of Alount Edgcumbe ; and the rest of the Grand Officers ,

Present and Past , " spoke of the good fortune of the Craft in having men of such known ability and position to lead them . He thought Alasons generall y were above the average of their fellow men in many points , but the Grand Officers were the picked men of the Craft , and they honoured and revered them accordingly . The D . P . G . AL , Bro . Hamon Le Strange , who responded

to the toast , was enthusiastically received . He particularly deplored the removal by untimely death of H . R . H . . the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , K . G ., who had given bright promise of future usefulness . They had also suffered a heavy blow in the loss of Bro . Colonel Shadwell Clerke , but he was pleased to be able to tell them that a most excellent brother had been selected to preside over the

important work which fell to the Grand Secretary ' s ofiice . The appointment was now worth £ 1000 a year , but Bro . Letchworth had given up a position worth more than that in order that he might undertake the arduous and responsible duties of the Grand Secretaryship . They hadin their neiv Grand Secretary an earnest , able , working Alason , and the Grand Alaster ' s appointment had given universal

satisfaction . The toast of " The R . W . Provincial Grand Master . Uro . Lord Sufiield , K . C . B ., " was proposed by Bro . Sparks , who expressed the hope that the Provincial Grand Master might soon be restored to health . . The Deputy Provincial Grand .
